I'm more excited by this coming out than usual.
Although the full game isn't out for a fortnight, a full feature demo is being released (http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=53492) at midnight (UK) tonight.
I think I'll be spending the next few days sheltering from the elements making a valiant effort to organise Newcastle!
Anyone else looking forward to it?

Demo is out. ~1GB For the 'strawberry' demo.
Apparently its Intel only, even thought the box art has the Universal Binary logo.

I'm downloading now, but I'm quite sure my Rev A Macbook with its puny GMA 950 and running Tiger won't be able to run it. You really know its time to upgrade when you can't even play Football Manager.
Now where did I leave that £1,200...

Your GMA 950 should be able to run it in 2D mode, although the system requirements do state OS X 10.5.5
A user on the SIGames Forums said he had it working on PPC OS X 10.5.4 (I think the user said 3D as well but not running well. So who knows...

Yep, seems like it is Universal Binary indeed. But working properly on Leopard only.
I am enjoying the game so far, 3d match is awesome and such but there is a serious injury bug. They'll probably fix it until release(and patch a Tiger compatibility, hopefully).

Well, I've just tried to run the demo on the Macbook in my sig (running Tiger)
The game seems to load up just fine and snappy...right up until you actually go into the match. At that point it just seems to hang forever, regardless of whether you choose 3D match or classic view.
It's a shame as apart from the 3D view, I see no reason why my MB shouldn't be capable of playing it. FM is one of the only games I play and as my MB does everything else I need it to do perfectly it'd be annoying to upgrade machines just to play a game that - with one minor feature disabled - it should be able to run like a breeze.
Bleh.
EDIT: Nevermind, I'm an idiot. There is an option to turn off the 3D all together. Phew. However, the game does still seem a bit buggy. I tried to change the forward and backward arrows in one of my tactics and the whole thing started behaving very oddly until I had to close FM down. Also, TV Mode (which is fullscreen 2D basically) is not very smooth at all. Not a major complaint, but still a bit annoying.
Haven't played for very long so I can't give an indepth review of bugs. However, on trip to the SI Games forum indicates that the whole thing seems a bit buggy...

Yes, it always seems to be a buggy release from SI.
I thought the 3D match engine looked terrible (in need of anti-aliasing), and found a setting for graphical detail.
Needless to say I can only choose low. I assume this is because my graphics card is too low as apposed to the higher details not being included in the demo.
I may try and run the PC demo on Vista on the same computer to see if that enables me to run the higher detail levels if I don't get any information from SI.
Mac Pro 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, X1900XT
EDIT: As it turns out running Vista on my Mac Pro and the same graphics card I am able to select any of the graphical detail levels.

Apparently if you try to load the game up in Windows on a system that can't run 3D view, it won't even let you start up the game to turn the 3D option off.
Bizarre.

Hmm... It does seem to get buggier with each release. I was lucky with 2008 in so far as I wasn't affected by many of the problems some people were experiencing, but there was one major bug that made running a long-term game a frustrating experience. Luckily, it was resolved in the patch but it's not what you expect when you buy a game.
I traditionally buy on the day of release, this time though I might wait a week or two to see if there are any major issues.

It's not looking too great (http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=54824) at the moment. I'm having problems with right-clicking - it "stays clicked" and the only option is to restart.
Still it's a free demo. Am hoping there'll be a patch pretty speedily when it's released - I won't be handing over any money until I hear testimony of it working smoothly on a MB.

Oh dear another FM... Hmmm, finishing PhD, maintaining relationship with g/f.... or getting the Mighty Colchester United into Europe???
DAMN YOU SI!!!
Also, I never buy FMs until at least the first patch is out, because a) I hate (the inevitable) crippling bugs and b) the patches are sometimes not save game compatible and require you to start a new game anyway and I hate getting stuck into a season only to have to restart...
(If it doesn't run well on a GMA950 this might be a blessing after all)

Yeah I think FM2008 8.0.2 was quite solid, the one thing that annoyed me was if a player got injured after I had made 3 substitutions, I could drag him off on the tactics screen but the confirm button stayed grey, so I couldn't actually do it.
...and I should actually be studying.

The problem I had was a bug with the board confidence feature. I like to play as a non-league side and try to work my way as far up the leagues as I can. As such, I opted to play as Harrogate Town in the Blue Square North.
My chairman gave me a simple brief it was something along the lines of establishing ourselves as a well-performing team in the BSN in two years. I got the team promoted as champions in my first season (by some distance). In my second season I finished in the Blue Square Premier play-offs, and if memory serves I won either the FA Trophy or the Setanta Shield. All in all, not a bad start to my managerial career the board was delighted, the players loved me, and I was adored by the Harrogate supporters.
Then I got sacked.
This was bizarre, as I'd been hugely successful I'd won promotion and performed well in the Blue Square Premier. But my initial brief was to perform well in the Blue Square North, and despite being in a higher division the board's confidence due to the bug went through the floor and I was sacked for not fulfilling my targets.
Of course, this made the game all but unplayable at lower levels if you do well and get promoted, you'd get sacked. Needless to say I was very happy when the patch came out and rectified this rather glaring bug.

All the previous versions of the game have (as far as I can remember) needed the CD to play. As for cracks to play the game without one, sorry but we can't help you on that one I'm afraid. Discussing such things is against forum rules, as such knowledge can be used to help pirate the software. ;)

Us mac users have been, how shall I put it, screwed, in terms of an electronic license for FM2009. With the Windows version you can authorize 5 computers to play FM2009 via STEAM a Windows only distribution and authentication package. Us mac users are stuck with a good ol' DVD.

Great article, this was my favourite bit:
That's what Mark Collis and Ferrah Orosco, who worked on the game, did in the 1993-94 end-of-season edition: both were put straight into lowly Cambridge's team as fully fledged England internationals. Reports that Graeme Souness tried to sign them to play alongside Ali Dia at Southampton three seasons later, after a tip off from Roy Race, are unconfirmed

My team (Stockport County) have always been quite lucky in the CM series - Andy Welsh, Mike Flynn, James Flood, Aidie Mike, Didier Agathe (the latter never actually playing for us in real life before going to Celtic) all went on to be world-beaters.
However, SI have made up for it by making us absolutely turd in FM09 :(

Quite phenomenal that SI still haven't made any comment whatsoever on the sudden removal of compatibility of post-patch FM09 with Tiger. Despite the information on the box, the pre-patch version worked, the demo worked and the manual stated Tiger was supported.
I don't expect an instant fix, just something saying that they acknowledge there is an incompatibility and that they do (or do not) intend to resolve it.
I hate to imitate some of the petulant hyperbole seen on the SI forum as I really love the game and can't wait to play it, but from a PR point of view they are an utter, utter shambles.

Well, they've finally given us an update. It was something along the lines of "We always try to make our games work on as many different configurations as possible, but if your system is below minimum spec then tough titties"...neglecting the fact that they hadn't made up their mind what minimum spec was before they released the game.
I suppose this is all quite accurate to the life of a football fan: Your club can serve up utter turd week-after-week, season-after-season, yet you'll still fork out £100s a year to go and watch them.

SI have put out a second Mac patch (9.1.1) for Tiger users, supposedly allows the game to run on 10.4.11.
And have stated they are [finally] aware of the graphics bug and are 'looking into it'

I don't believe so, not that I'm one to trust SI at the moment.
Hi everyone,
First of all I would like to clarify that the minimum OS specs for FM/WSM 2009 are as they are on the back of the box namely 10.5.5 (Leopard) and up. It is by mistake that the manual still lists 10.4.11 (Tiger) as a supported OS. Hence we were unaware that the 9.1.0 patch disabled the game for 10.4.11 (Tiger) users.
The good news is, despite 10.4.11 (Tiger) being officially unsupported, we have fixed the startup issue and created a 9.1.1 patch which is now available. 10.4.11 (Tiger) users applying this patch will again be able to play the game.
This update will only affect 10.4 (Tiger) users 10.5 (Leopard) users will see no difference so need not apply this update, however doing so will not harm your installation.
I would like to wholeheartedly apologise on behalf of all at SI and SEGA for this unfortunate chain of events and the angst it has caused.
Additionally, I would like to confirm that the graphical options remain unchanged in this patch, however we are hard at work to improve these in subsequent patches. This patch will not enable PowerPC Macs of either 10.4 or 10.5 to run the game, an Intel CPU is required.

I've just installed the new football manager 2009 and its having trouble starting.
Everytime i click the icon to play it my screen just goes completely blank and the only way to get back to my screen is to turn my laptop off through the power source and then restart it.
Not sure whether i need to update my graphics?
If anyone else has had any of these problems and knows a solution i would be hugely appreciative if you could let me know.
My system is a Mac OS X 10.4.11 PowerBook G4.

The problem is that - despite them slapping a great big Universal logo on the front of the box - the game is Intel only, and won't run on PowerPC-based Macs like your PowerBook.
Sorry I can't be more helpful, but there's really nothing to suggest other than taking the game back for a refund as it simply isn't going to work on your Mac.

Yes there is an option for "Windowed Mode." Find the Game Options menu and fish around and you should be able to find it. I've only played the demo but it is in there somewhere.

What you're doing should work, but as it isn't maybe try moving the training file to another location and importing it from there?
You could maybe try putting the file in username/Documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2009/schedules and see if that gives you any joy.
I've got the new FM2009 in cheeky fashion (I am currently broke) but I've no clue on Earth how to install the thing!I assume your 'cheeky fashion' is to get your hands on a pirated copy such things are viewed pretty dimly here, and discussing how to do so is against forum rules (http://guides.macrumors.com/Help:Forum_Rules#Instantly_Bannable_Offenses) so please don't ask us how to go about doing it.

Do you think the non-demo version wouldn't in fact work for me?I must admit to being a bit baffled. All the stuff I've read from SI (including the statement pknz quotes a little earlier in this thread) states that an Intel processor is required, PowerPC Macs won't run it at all. Maybe, for some reason, the demo was Universal but for some technical reason or something they made the full-release Intel-only. Strange.
If I've been wrong and have been doling out dodgy information, my apologies.
EDIT: I've just been looking on their forum and in a thread on system specs (http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=53492) they state...
Mac System requirements
The game is currently only being supported on Intel Mac's only, and the minimum requirements are - OSX 10.5.5, Nvidia Geforce 7300 / ATI X1600 Radeon. 1GB RAM.
Bizarre.

I tried it out the other day. It will work on GMA950 but make sure you turn off the 3D match cameras in settings before you start your first match or it will bring your entire mac down. You would think that it would detect that its GMA950 and turn that option off by default. I say this every years but Sports Interactive are not very good at what they do and I have first hand experience. I still can't download the Mac 9.2 patch because the link seems to download an .exe file.

There doesn't seem to be a downloadable MAC version. You have to buy a boxed copy. SIGAMES have a list of a handful of retailers in just a few countries.
I'm not really sure what you're supposed to do if you live outside those countries and have a mac.

There's actually a working scout (and soon-to-be editor) called FM09SX (http://www.fm-britain.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=9249) that you can use instead. Also available here (http://www.fmscout.com/i-423-FM09SX--Mac-Editor-for-FM-2009/comments-1.html), but not sure if it's the latest version.

The copy protection is different between Mac and PC and the price for not having to deal with DRM (as on the PC) is having to use the DVD.
There are ways around this, but the least legally dubious method is probably if you create and mount a disk image of your game DVD using Toast.

hello everyone, iv been trying an trying to get the kits and graphics updates to work on my football manager 2009.
The game its self has worked fine since i bought it. i have been buying football manager form a young age, and know basically everything there is to know about it. EXCEPT THIS! which i know you think will be frustrating.
i have followed the step by step explanations on various websites
extract folder of kits and logos to a graphics folder, un-tick cache and tick reload skin and confirm then it should appear on my game???
i have tried this loads of times and it really doesn't want to work.
although once the kits worked, and they still appear on my game. but nothing else will.
can anyone try and shed some light on the subject?????
this also happens with the skins, when i extract the download to the skins folder and go to choose the skin, it doesnt appear in preferences on the drop down menu.
help me please, it is driving me nuts lol.
