no quicktime file?

I picked up a few Seinfeld .avi's and one .divx from a friend, but they won't play on Quicktime. It says it doesn't have the correct files and they aren't available on the Quicktime server. I used to have this problem all the time when I had a PC and I tried to watch tv episodes that I downloaded. What codec do I need??? or...Is there anything for Mac's that will allow me to watch these?

Do a search for mPlayer or VLC. I've found there's very little files VLC can't open.
