I love it! Word now uses (and I presume all other office apps too) aa text! 10.1.5 and office v. x are a great combo. I used office v. x with 10.1.4 and it was quick. now with anti-aliased text in 10.1.5 it is STILL quick (the aa text didnt slow it down on my 500mhz ibook) and beautiful. idisk is quick. ive got quicktime 6 preview. loads in under 2 bounces (ive got 384mb ram) hmmm overall, im very pleased. timing between two huge companies (apple and microsoft) is wonderful. Office update one day to take advantge of new features. The next day the OS with the new features is out. Now THATS ******** teamwork!!!

Yes its nice to see things happen...but if these guys would ever get over their agendas and focus on building a fantastic product I will lose...IT.
Simply amazing how quickly messenger 3.0 came out after the announcement of ichat...Too bad the file transfer won't work over Messenger...i think its my firewall...i wonder just how long that app has been ready....Can you imagine how many other things are readied in the torpedo tubes waiting for release....whenever they feel the pressure from the competition.

Finally, with OS 10.1.5 my DP800 can go into deep sleep. I have a PCI SCSI card installed (that was BTO from Apple), and my system has never been able to go to deep sleep in OS X.
Finally, this has been fixed with 10.1.5
Yoohoo!!!

I agree, it is much nicer. I've had some issues with IE not displaying things correctly after its been in use, I'll have to watch carefully to see if this continues, or if its been fixed.
The browse button for the attach file still doesn't display correctly.
damn, I can no longer make you all glut over my 10.1.5 build...I'll just have to install 10.2 sooner or later and still be ahead of the game. enjoy boys & girls.

No, the AA is in Word, or all of office actually. The thing that I am really impressed with is the 2D support for the Rage Pro. Sheets and the Genie are very fluid now. I cannot wait to see the final build of X.2. There is no way that they are showing us everything.

Apple is pissing me off -- they haven't updated their S/W Updates (http://www.apple.com/swupdates) page... sure, they can update the main OS X page with a nice new little graphic up the top and put the description at the side of their "look how great software update is" -- no problems, but when it comes to making the download actually available over HTTP, well, they can't do that, can they!
it's only really minor, but you'd think they would have automated this by now!

Nice to have another update (and a reasonably major one at that), but my digital camcorder still isn't supported under OS X. In OS 9 iMovie recognises it, but X still insists on saying "Camera Disconnected". I wonder how long it'll take before that's fixed? :(

Hi maiku,
I have found www.dpreview.com/ (http://www.dpreview.com) to be an excellent site regarding digital cameras. The site has a facility that you can search for different specs, like firewire. Currently only the high end models offer it :(
It just needs some company ??? to release an affordable high spec FIREWIRE camera with a built in 10GB hard drive... Hmmm, I wonder :D
Excellent update BTW, aa text is brilliant. Has anyone else noticed though that text below a certain size (I noticed it superscript) still reverts back to the old rendering. Kind of annoying because it makes it difficult to read. I can't seem to find any options for changing the size that this cuts of at in word. I already have the option set for smallest size in 'General' pref pane.
Still looking for the next IE though!

I thought apple had pretty much got screwed for promising it would work on the REV A iMacs and older G3 models with this chip ?
I've only got a RageII+, even though I bought my beige G3 DT around the time the B & W G3s were out, I ended up with some grey import model or something. in the UK, by the time the desktops were using 300Mhz G3 CPUs, the motherboard had hit Rev C, they had EIDE slave support, 256Mb SDRAM support and most importantly, a Rage Pro. I spent an extra £25 on the 4Mb VRAM upgrade too and it was only after a month or so when I realised I'd been sold a real POS and should have paid the extra £100 and chanced it with the B & W G3 afterall.
My little sob story aside, people have been expecting support for the RageII+ from day one, we're still not getting it, I know it's one lame graphics chipset but surely supporting it would mean apple is keeping it's original promise about supporting all models of G3 (apart from that rush job of a powerbook G3 they brought out at first).

If I am not mistaken, Apple has said that ATI has decided not to develop support for that chipset. That the only one that would be would be the Rage Pro. That is why there has been a lawsuit filed in California over the issue.

No they will not. Steve said that there would be one more update to X.1.x before X.2 was released. So this is it for updates until the big one. I cannot wait. They have there work cut out for them, but I think that they will be able to pull it off.

So Apple made iDisk fast enough to actually use, but did it after they basically made iTools worthless. Who cares how fast you can upload files to your iDisk, if the stuff is not reachable because of their ridiculous bandwidth limitations?
I posted some pictures there for some of my friends to look at, and the site was "shutdown due to excessive bandwidth" after only a few hours. What a crock.

well its not really due to that 'tho. the bug you speak of has been put off about 8 weeks because the owner of it (sfraser) has been on vacation. now that 10.1.5 is giving people the opportunity for cheap easy AA, they have written an easy patch that was checked in today. we will wait and see if the mozilla crew decides to continue their quest for true ATSUI text.

ah. sweet. my next question is if apple was apple to allow carbon apps to have access to AA, then how about some access to other services. more specifically how abot access to spell checking. now that would be sweet. spell checking is my favorite feature in ow and adium. although i wish the spell checking dictionary was better. i still have to pop open word every once in awhile to use their spell checking feature.

I'm glad Apple has made an combo updater for people that have been wanting them for several reasons. And I'm glad that for most people here the update was smooth and without a hitch (Then again, many posting here are beta testing officially unreleased versions all the time anyway)
But I have still been stuck in my tracks since 10.1.2, because of the trouble reports I read such as those at:
http://www.macintouch.com/mosxreader10.1.5pt01.html
Which I first have to sort through and decipher as to whether they might effect me at all, as it is often old powerbooks and beige G3s that cry the most. But it is still disconcerting that there seems to be so much breaking, with every little fix an update provides. I don't want to have to reinstall everything from scratch, even If I knew how (I forget my registration codes as soon as they are filled in the forms)
And back up and restore is a bit daunting. If the updates have done anything for me, it has had me look closer at Carbon Copy Cloner. Its a shame you just can't undo an update, as a feature built into Apples installation. Apple really needs to improve its act on the installation front, and with getting with developers, whose work tends to flip flop between Broken/fixed depending on the OS update applied.
AmbitiousLemon
Jun 6, 2002, 09:15 PM
i think people having problems with any of the updates are generally people who have non apple hardware or who just have issues before the update that become exasperated by the update. i have installed every update on a number of machines from g3 powerbook, bw g3s, and newer machines and NEVER had a problem. but i keep my machines in good working order.
i dont think you should be scared off by these sorts of things. they are not common, and not usually caused by anything to do with the apple update. but mostly if you do have old machines you should update simply because osx will run better with the latest systems.

As I said, I try to sift through the problems, to see what could possibly apply to my setup. The problems generally are with peripheral drivers and software (if it were nothing but Apple stuff involved I'm sure it would go smooth as silk).
Only two of the following would concern me, I use my Firewire LaCie CD-r constantly, and was planning on getting a Radeon 8500. But why should I have to worry at all?
Following is a condensed 'bad news' report from the macintouch link I gave earlier:

Hang on install, kernal panic, classic icons reassigned, lost classic Dreamweaver function

Wow, every conceivable problem under the sun...and what makes you think that these varied problems are caused by 10.1.5?
I'd be concerned if I heard 100 reports of a the same problem, not 100 reports of completely different ones.
I myself have had some issues with connecting to remote disks via AppleTalk...sometimes my Finder just goes out to lunch and not even force quitting it brings it back. I've had to completely reboot my machine twice today, where it had been on continuously for weeks at a time before hand. If I hear about many other people having the same problem, I'll take it as a sign of a bug.

I'd be concerned if I heard 100 reports of a the same problem, not 100 reports of completely different ones.
Did you read the list? There is considerable repetition and thematic similarity to sort out some possibly repeatable bugs. Its even harder to see this reading it in its original form however, it could be consolidated more. As it is Each line represents a separate report. Installer issues. Driver issues, sleep and monitor issues.
Regarding Choppaface question about Twain, it has not been a problem with my USB scanner ( I don't have the recurring epson printer driver probs others seem to have either) But SCSI problems seem to be an issue with X, and they were equally as flaky going back to 8.6 and the first g4s, for what that is worth. I have an adapted SCSI card on the shelf I wouldn't even consider using without doing a lot of research and tracking down drivers first.
Overall the problem is, Apple updates break third party drivers maybe because Apple and the third parties aren't on the same page or helping each other , and there is seemingly no simple way to restore to what worked if the update does takes you down. It isn't always the hardware and software companies fault however, it is often due to user error. But having to reinstall the OS and all your apps from scratch is simply not a good enough solution.

Awesome! AA in AppleWorks too! Thank you! :)

I think apple has done a great job with 10.1.5. I always wanted AA for AppleWorks.. Silk + 10.1.5 rules. . Alas, AOL crashes with AA turned on.. hope we will have an update for AOL as well..
