The marathon series was good back in the day. To bad Microsoft had to go and buy out Bungie when they were working on Halo. A-10 Attack series was fun to play. Also put a lot of hours in Civilization 2 as a kid. Unreal Tournament 2004 is also one of the greatest, and also all of Blizzard's games(except World of Warcraft) are great games. :apple:

Starcraft. Nuff said

14 years later, and still running strong.

2nd place goes to Halo.

Maybe 5 years down the road CoD 4 will become epic....god I hope not though, I am hoping Mac gaming will pick up over the next few years, and we wont have to play 5 year old games to get our kix lol.

Blizzard has been nearly the Alpha and Omega of Mac gaming, as far as I'm concerned.

I can't think of a non-Blizzard Mac game that I personally thought measured up since Myth 2 in 1998.

There was an entry to the Mac Game programming contest uDevGame several years ago. It was called Tank World (2003) I think. There was one map where you could drive to either end, go into this ramp that went 180 degrees and came out on the ceiling/floor above where you just were. You could aim straight up and shoot at the other players.

Yeah it was multiplayer online enabled. I bought a RADEON 9000 to put in my G4/450 (under the desk here next to my work G5 now) to play the game better.

Another awesome game: Hollow Ground.

Also a good crop of game from Ambrosia:

Ferazel's Wand (platformer).

Deimos Rising. I got a USB gamepad clone of the PS controller to play this.

Harry the Handsome Executive.

Other games:

Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far (spent way too many hours/days playing this including an mod to make it an African campaign instead of Op. Market Garden).

And the best MMO tank game ever: Bolo

Flatout2

Of those, Marathon was the game that took me in, felt like I was that character, and tons of hours playing on lan, so that's my No. 1

Flatout2 I discovered just a few weeks ago - something about flying down side streets at insane speeds, doing a powerslide through the plate glass on the corner of a building and into an opponent to knock them into a wall, then hitting the nitro down the straightaway makes me giddy. heh Like an updated Carmageddon, with better everything.

Doesn't seem to be many if any other macheads playing it though. Runs great on 2 ghz intel imac with ATI 2400

Made me feel old too! My school only had one set of most of the disks, and we'd have to go to other classrooms to get the Accelerated Reader disks depending on which one we needed. I didn't use OS 8 until I was out of high school. We didn't even have color monitors in elementary school! :o Just green text (or orange text) and a grey-black screen.

All the "games" seemed to be more educational than game-ish, like MicroType and Amazon Trail. We also played a lot of Jeopardy! in elementary school.

Escape Velocity was one (albeit a small one :p) of the reasons that got me to buy my first powerbook back in 2002 (I was feeling nostalgic, and the game was already 5 years old by then!). There was also a fun game I played growing up, I think it was called Afterlife or something (a SimCity-esque game of Heaven and Hell), and Syndicate was pretty fun too. If only I could play some of these classic games today on my MBP :(.

I've seen some of the older classic games ported for OS X on the torrent sites. Top 100 on Piratebay.

It's like a DOS emulator or something, but it runs on my G5. I'm assuming it'll work on intel boxes too. It's not great enough for me to ditch my G3 with 9.2 on it, but if all you have is a newer machine I'd say it's worth a go.

I really enjoyed the Escape Velocity series. That was a lot of fun, and originally only on the mac.

If we are talking about games on multiple platforms, I like the civilization series. But I'm probably forgetting other games since I don't play them often anymore.

Definitely. That'd be my number one.

Then the Journeyman Project series, notably Pegasus Prime, which NEVER EVER CAME OUT FOR WINDOWS. It's funny to watch Windows users when they find out they can't play it.

There's also Crystal Crazy. Whoa man.

What else? So many games were better on the Mac than their PC versions. Descent, You Don't Know Jack, and definitely Dark Forces. Interlaced mode FTW! And I never say "FTW."

Muat admit, superb game.

Don't play is so often nowadays, but I have played it so much.
I had the Logitech MOMO FF wheel attached to the Mac, and the Force Feedback and general feel of the driving in Nascar 2003 was excellent!

It looks very nice, and for the day, it looked brilliant.
Too bad a new more 3d-stunning-looking Nascar isn't coming.... IIRC Nascar 2009 is only for Xbox 360 an PS3. :(

So many great memories.

Dark Castle and Apache Strike, Strategic Conquest and Prince of Persia. RoboSport and Spectre. Another World and Patton Strikes Back. All the V for Victory games from Atomic. SimCity Classic and 2000. Diablo and Diablo II, Myth II and the WWII expansion. Original Civilization and Civ II (but not Civ CTP), original AoE and AoE II, maybe even Rise of Nations. All the Myst episodes and Dungeon Siege. And Majesty TFK.

But number 1 for me was / is Caesar III (everything Civ and AoE and SimCity wanted to be).

But then I never played StarCraft, it came out while I was too busy Myth and Myth II'ing, before jumping to Diablo II.

I'm a fan of RPGs, and my favourite would have to be Realmz. In terms of graphics and style though, TaskMaker/Tomb of the TaskMaker were the most impressive.

My favourite FPS for single play is split between Deus Ex and Marathon Infinity, and for network play is Unreal Tournament (the original, which let you have up to 4 teams, not just red vs blue!)

The best LAN party game was Bolo, which was way before it's time in terms of networking options and compatibility (from a Mac Plus up!)

Other highly esteemed games include Dark Castle, Spaceward Ho!, Scarab of RA, Gunshy, System's Twilight and Lord of Destruction.

its a good one but can you play it in a intel? We need to have that as a criteria here. Greatest Mac game that you CAN STILL PLAY on a new MAC. I can think of a few but none will play on the intel's. UT99 for one.

Easy!

1. Duke Nukem 3D
2. Hellcats Over the Pacific ( and the Leyte Gulf add-on)
3. Star Wars-Dark Forces
4. Maelstrom
5. Spectre ( cant get that sound out of my head!!!)

Newer classic for me: Call of Duty and United Offensive. Still, Duke Nukem rocks with great feel, ability to interact with almost anything ( trash cans, HVAC vents, etc) and great humor.

Hail Caesar! Second wasn't even close for me, unfortunately. I would rate the best games on addictive potential, and C III really was in a league of its own, in my opinion. How many wasted nights did I spend trying to build a better Rome and stave of the barbarians???

Quake Arena, Unreal Tournament and Star Wars Pod racer were all very cool, too, but let me not forget the one that got me started: Chuck Yeager's Air Combat! Screw the graphics, it was always "a great day for flying", as Chuck used to announce before each sortie!

Even when my new Mac Pro arrives, I will never give away my trusty G4 so I can always boot into OS 9 and get a visit from these old friends!

Gabriel Knight I really enjoyed. Have some good memories of staying at my best friend's house on weekends and playing those games non-stop.

Are most of you guys from 1995 or something? I mean, Crystal Quest!?...Marathon!?...come on, where are the Doom 3's or Sim 2's? The people who are listing games like that should really take a look at the games that were released in the last decade...

Anyway my top games are:

(not in order)

1. Max Payne
2. Fallout Series
3. Halo
4. Myst Series
5. World of Goo
6. World of Warcraft
7. Starcraft / Brood War

9. Warcraft III / The Frozen Throne
10. Cave Story
11. Penumbra: Black Plague

Cod4.. Its pretty good, yet when I played it it seemed to have been missing something COD2 had, I don't know what :o

Anyway, this game is pretty short, so in order to get more playtime (single player) you need to increase the difficulty level.
