178 Drivers MBP XP

I occasionally have the screen whine while in Xp Pro on my MPB early '08, but regardless of that fact, I would love to install some new drivers for it. I downloaded the latest for my model from Nvidia's website, but when ever I open it I get the Nvidia background, then an error message that says "Setup couldn't find any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware" or something very close to that.

I have heard of many Boot camp users installing these drivers with success. Whats my issue? Can you guys also send me the proper link for the drivers just in case I got the wrong ones?

Macbook Pro 10.5.5 Penryn GeForce 8600 Gt 256 MB VRAM. Running XP Professional SP3 on a NTFS 31 GB partition with about 28 GB free.

Yeah, i just tried to install a driver from the nvidia site and it came up with the same message.

Is the only graphics drivers avaliable through Apple.

You have an nVidia 8600m GT, not an 8600 GT... so the drivers you are trying to install are desktop GPU drivers, not mobile ones. For the latest hacked drivers (the latest gpu drivers that WILL run on a laptop) go to:

www.laptopvideo2go.com

The most stable drivers I used from them, are the 180.48 drivers located here:

For XP 32-bit. Download the driver, download the modded INF file. Extract the contents to the desktop, the folder should be named "180.48" or some variation of that. Copy the INF file you downloaded into that folder. Go into the folder and find "setup.exe" (depending on your settings, the .exe may be suppressed meaning you will only see "setup"). In any case, start the setup process and it should work famously.

You can also go back to nvidia's site and download the latest laptop drivers. They seem to be a version or two behind the desktop drivers but they work fine.

The latest driver as of today was 179.28 and there's support for 32 and 64 bit vista and xp.

I would recommend this over going to laptopvideo2go. For some reason everytime I try a driver from that site I always get worse FPSs in games. Just be aware that the ones from the actual Nvidia site are beta.

I find that Nvidia's drivers are more stable. Many of the drivers that I use from LV2G cause problems. Random freezes, less overclockability (I rarely overclock though), black screen after boot up, and problems with Sleep and Hibernate. I tried using Dox's drivers, and it died on me the moment I tried putting it to sleep. The only stable drivers I found are 169.04, 174.74 & 175.19.

Nvidia's 179.28 drivers are working just great though. :)

I will try to install the latest windows 7 drivers. When I was using XP the system ran fine and now it's laggy at best with graphics being kind of lame in games.

I have a similar system and I can confirm that the 8600mGT drivers from nvidia for vista 32 bit work fine. They also have xp drivers up there too.
