I've found that the most reliable way to stop banner ads etc is to add their servers to the /etc/hosts file :)

Right now, after modifying the file, I'm rebooting the system in order to make it read the file and apply the changes. There must be a way to do this without rebooting, I remember doing it in a Linux class last year, but I can't remember it now. Anyone know?

And nermal, if you want a fairly comprehensive lists of the banner ads here it is (http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~atman/spam/Hosts.shtml)

Do you need to restart? I'm pretty sure on my Red Hat box that anything I put in /etc/hosts would be recognized immediately.

It's possible I'm wrong...
