Spotlight, how to associate metadata with every file and folder.

I am designing an application which needs to associate a small amount of metadata with every file and folder in a specified set of folders.

Before I re-invent the wheel is there a way using spotlight or another built-in library to access and store this kind of data ?

Yes, there is a Cocoa API and I believe you can do it in AppleScript. Google could probably tell you more ;)
