Okay, so it's not a direct insult, but I FELT insulted. Enough to fire off an e-mail explaining that even though I own Virtual PC, I now won't buy any more of their products that I enjoyed in the past (which WERE compatible with Macs, by the way - at least, the ones I owned.)

I don't find it any bit insulting... It's just stating the facts. I believe previous "You Dont know Jacks" were Mac compatible, so in my eyes, the "special note to Mac" users can be accountable.

I can see you might be insulted by the "perhaps you might befriend a Windows user" bit, but then it appears that you're disgusted by Windows users.

Mac, not "MAC."


The game Vice City has PC version, but no Mac version. So don't expect (and I hate to use this word) the "attitude" expressed within the line: "Perhaps you might befriend a Windows user" to generate any real creative feedback from Mac users. Don't bother dealing with companies that like to express themselves in such an incoherent manner.

BTW: Did anyone else read through the little note? We're special, 'cause we use Macintosh computers!

The Mac market is simply not growing. Other segments are filling in the for the decline that is actually going on. Niche market now, niche market forever.

You're definately right about that. At work we have a client that is purchasing a bunch of used iMacs, which we've been buying off ebay. Most of them come with pirated software - burned copy of photoshop CS, Panther, iLife, etc.

Personally, I think it's funny. Just like I thought it was funny when Jobs released iTunes for Windows by saying "here is the best Windows app ever written." Some people live in such a humorless world...

Well, I get a bit unsettled when I find out that a well-known game or product that I would like to have is available for PC and not Mac. But I have a bit of a pet peeve when companies make it clear that you have to be using a PC for the product...instead of posting a flat out, opinion-less statement, such as: "No Macintosh version of [the product] is available," some companies will put up a message with some sort of remark with regard to Mac users, such as the one from the link. So if you want to call that pet peeve of mine humorless, then call it humorless, but also understand where I'm coming from.

Get over it--it's a part of what the game is. YDKJ was available for Macs early on and I suppose it's sad to see another game gone but I didn't play it.

If you're taking these kind of things so personally, you're taking your computer too personally. It's tool, not a religious icon.

Sheesh, touchy. Bummer they don't have a windows version (though from CNN's review, doesn't sound like this YDKJ is much to write home about), but I'd expect no less than a smartassed comment from these guys in reference to compatiblity. That's the style of the whole thing, after all.

I don't think that's sad at all; "shareware", which these days as often as not means "commercial application that you can download from the internet to try before you buy", is a valid, growing, and very good section of the software market. Shareware apps tend to get dissed because of the hobbyist image they used to have, but I don't think applications like Thoth, or the stuff from Panic, or Mellel, or Eudora, or BBEdit/TextWrangler, or Graphic Converter, or any number of other professional and powerful applications deserve to be treated as any less than what they are: commercial, professional tools. The world has changed--just because it doesn't come in a box doesn't mean it's not real software.

(For that matter, how about free, open source products like Mozilla, or SimpleMachines forum software, or Nuke, or MySQL, or Linux, or FreeBSD, or any number of other industrial-grade server applications?)
