I'm using OS 9 with Outlook Express 5.0.6. When I go to open the program it quits and I get a box that says: An error has occured while launching. The end of file was reached. Any ideas what this means?

Thanks,
Elliot

a friend of mine had the same problem. i looked at it for a few minutes but couldn't resolve it. the next thing i was going to suggest was to delete the OE preferences. have you tried that?

also, are you running this through classic? if you've got an os9-bootable machine, boot into os9 and try launching OE.

Don't know what you mean by "if you've got an os9-bootable machine, boot into os9 and try launching OE". I got rid of what I could find by Sherlock and downloaded a another outlook but same thing happens. Noticed in the systems folder/preferences there's 2 prefs for OE. One 5.0 update and one 5.02 update (I'm using the 5.0.6). Should I trash these? Maybe I should download an older version of OE.

ah, i thought you were running osx. okay, go ahead and delete those preferences and see if that makes any change.

i don't know, then. maybe go to http://support.microsoft.com/ and see if there's anything mentioned about it there. good luck.

(and if you find anything, please post back here!)

Another thing to consider is to upgrade to OS 9.2.2 Free downlaods are available on Apples Support site. But if you can't get there from here then have a friend download for you. Each stage is a bout 60-80mb download, but when all finished it's a very solid OS.
Also consider it may be an extension conlfict. Start OS 9 with extensions off and try to launch OE, after each time if you get an error as to "something" missing turn it on in extensions and try again. Eventually you'll find the culprit. I know someone out there will say "conflict Catcher" does the same thing, but My way when done right is faster.

fwiw, my friend was seeing the same problem from osx. for some unknown reason, his email is the os9 version of OE. i tried restarting classic w/ extensions disabled, but it didn't fix the problem.

I had a customer have this problem and what they had done that caused it was deleting a large number of messages from the trash. It overloaded the database and caused it to crash. Even a new install did not work, what you will have to do is go into the folder for microsoft user data and delete the databases. Rebuild OE when you load the program after deleting the databases. should work

Sounds good. I did delete a huge folder of emails all at once. Where exactly do I find this database? Just want to be careful I don't delete something I shouldn't.

I found a Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder that has 4 folders inside it: Identities, Outlook Express Temp, Script Menu Items and Sound Sets. I delete this Folder?

if memory serves you go to:
HardDrive:Documents:Microsoft User Data:

if memory serves you go into identities, main identity (or a folder with a similar name), and then there should be some database files. that is what you need to delete. you will lose all your info when you do this.

In the Identities folder there is a Main Identity folder which has to Databases. Database and Database Cache. Shall I just delete these and leave the rest like Preferences, Messages Mailing list, Rules etc.

(I'm getting there LOL)

yup those are them thingies I would leave the rest and just get the 2 DB files/folders first. if you have any more troubles take the other ones out too but I didn't have to.

Ok I dumped them then opened OE and same thing happened and I have new Databases. Shall I re-install the program after I delete Databases?

So you took out Preferences, Messages Mailing list, Rules and all those and rebuilt the database when you reopened the program, right?

If that didn't do it you will have little options otherwise.

yeah what happens is that it is a single db file and when you delete it does not automatically reduce the file size and when you delete large amounts of data---BLAM!!!

PhonemonkeyMy computer at work also has some strange Outlook Express problem. The best that I could surmise is that it was an incompatibility between OE and Office 98. If I launched OE before I launched Word 98, then OE worked fine. If I launched OE after I launched Word 98, OE would crash. The only remedy was to restart. I presume that the root of the problem was a M$ library conflict between OE and Word 98. There is a possibility that Word 2001 would have fixed the conflict, but Word 2001 was not worth it to me.
