i have .avi files that were encoded on a PC. i can view them in quicktime using the 3ivx plugin. but, it is incredibly slow. I have quicktime pro and can convert to another format. i tried "video" on medium quality, and it looks about the same quality wise. it is much easier to use in quicktime. i just picked this settign out of the blue. My question is, which setting should i use for ease of use and keep about the same quality? how do i know whatthe original was encoded at? Also, do i need to covert to DV to use in imovie? if so, what setting do i use there? if i use full quality, i seems like i'm using a ton of space for no improvement in quality. one .avi that i converted went from 104 to 450 megs. any help would be appreciated.

you will need to use dv for imovie i think. just put the settings to best, and best frame rate... dv/ntsc.. yes, you won't GAIN quality, because that's basically impossible. but imovie reads the format, so you need it in that. and yes, the file size will be bigger

as for your other question... what do you want to use it for? just viewingon your mac? if so, convert it to mp4... play with the settings for the best quality:file size ratio...

hope this helps some

Or maybe you should consider trying the real DiVX plugin or using VLC to play your files.
