If you can afford a $7000 application, can't you afford a PowerBook?

You'll be fine. Now that the iBooks are G4, they can handle anything a PowerBook can. Plus they are nearly as powerful as the last generation of TiBooks. Don't worry.

yeah, since it's a G4 now it shoud be alright. it's always a good idea to max out the RAM if you're doing any intensive type of work like that.

also, check out Maya 5 OS X qualified hardware (http://www.alias.com/eng/support/maya/qualified_hardware/QUAL/maya_50_osx.html).

You can't run Unlimited on OS X, only Complete (unless they've released an OS X version of Unlimited in the last couple of months).

i was going to suggest trying out the (free) Personal Learning Edition, but i went to the Alias site and the Personal Edition is Windows-only... ouch.

The Personal Learning Edition is available for Mac OS X - I downloaded it - but there is an error on the installer which causes it to "automatically quit" halfway through installation every time on my 12" PB.

Ya, the personal learning edition is good....it has most of the features present in the real version....however it puts a moving watermark on everything you export (and it exports in some weird format) so you can't really use it for any home movies or anything....

i stand corrected - must have been looking at the wrong page.

and yes, i know everything is watermarked, but the thread started can give this one a try to see how it runs.

here's the Maya PLE link...
