Image organization software - need recc.

I am looking for some software to organization my images. I would like some kind of software that would allow me to place images into categories. For example if I have a macro picture of a red flower that I took on vacation I would like to have it in the category of “Flowers” “Macro” and “Vacation”. I tried to do this with iPhoto, but I then would need to have 3 copies of the photo and than is not what I want. I would also like to me able to “combine” categories. For example I would like to see all my flower picture that I have taken on vacation that are not macro, or all my macro pictures of flowers that were not taken on vacation. (IE photos in category A,B,C but not in category D,E,F)

Does such a piece of software exist? What is anyone else using?

I do this using keywords in iPhoto, rather than actual collections. Then I search for it. See attachment.

For any software to work properly photo ID is going to have to happen somewhere along the line. There is no software I know of that can "read" a photo and know what it is. You need to come up with a "file naming protocol" and one by one re-label or name your files. Then apps like iPhoto or others can do their job. I have been doing this with my fonts for years, by knowing what foundry each come from, and separating my postscript "screen" fonts from the "printer" files by placing a single space in front of the name so they are all at the top of my lists. same thing with photos. When I download a days shooting from the digital I go through each one and give them an appropriate name so they can be easily sorted and retrieved later.
