i use boot camp to create a partition for windows to be installed on but i am unable to choose/it does not show up when installing XP. What should i do? New to mac thanks in advance

Did you go into system prefs and then to Startup Disk? There, you can select which disk boots up on restart.

Hold down the ALT key while booting to select your windows drive.

How old is the XP disc? It has to be Service Pack 2 or later. If it's the original version or Service Pack 1, it won't show the Boot Camp partition as it's not a supported OS. I've (stupidly) tried to install the original 2001 version of XP before using Boot Camp on my iMac about a year ago, and selected the only partition that showed up...and it wiped my entire OS X partition :p
