How do you request a song in the music store in iTunes 4.5? The support documents all say to click on the link in the upper left corner, but I don't see anything.

They still have it, but now you have to request via the iTunes feedback on the iTunes support page. Under "Feedback Type" they have reqauest music. http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

though it would be nice if they still had a direct link right in the store.

No problem. I agree that it is more of a pain to request a song now, but from what I've heard, too many people and bands were making requests so they had to tone it down a bit.

Well, they finally got the Beasties so I guess it works ;)

Feh. I just discovered this "upgrade" this morning. I used to request a lot of songs. They want to tone down the number of requests, the way to do it is start carrying more independents.
