My daughter's 12" iBook (the 2nd latest generation) froze up while doing a spell check in MS Word for Mac. Other than a *force quit*, what options do we have so that she can save her document?

The reason that we don't want to do a *force quit* is because she will lose her entire essay, which she unfortunately didn't save as she was writing it. She's beside herself because she really put an enormous amount of work into it.

All help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated :)

Well Word is set to automatically save every so often so maybe it saved. When you try to open Word again it may give you an Auto Recovery Option and you'll have your document. Of course this is NO Guarantee.

I assume since Word is frozen you can't just Copy & Paste. You can do a Print Screen using Grab in Applications > Utilities
This will give you the information she type, but you can't copy and paste because it will be an image file. But at least you can read it and she can type it again. But first see if it was Auto Recovered

Thanks for the suggestion.

We called the Apple Care technician and he said to do a *force quit* and everything would be recoved up to the time of the last auto-save.

Fortunately she didn't lose too much.

Immediately afterwards I changed her Word preferences to do an auto save every 1 minute instead of the default 10 minutes.

Use that very carefully. If you are working with a very large document, then it will cause a slowdown every minute as it tries to save.

Of course you are 100% correct, but that won't slow her down anywhere near as much as losing the entire document due to a crash or a freeze-up.
