Hi gang,
I just bought a used 2g iPod off ebay and was wondering if I can somehow save the 578 songs that are already on it. I think I need to update the iPod software so I can use the latest iTunes, so won't this erase it first? Thanks a bunch.

PS: It says 'Do not disconnect', but can I eject it from iTunes while it says this? Also, can I update it while it says this? Thanks for the help!

You can use iPodRip to get the songs off the iPod, assuming you are on a Mac.

If the iPod is set to update automatically, since you already connected it to your computer, the songs are gone. If it is set to update manually the songs will still be there. The setting is saved on the iPod. Because it says Do not disconnect I am assuming it is set to update manually and you have to manually eject/unmount your iPod. Yes you can eject it, just don't disconnect it, before you eject it. Yes you can update it while it says that, but you might want to use iPodRip first.

First of all, that's very naughty. Secondly, Frisco is right--there are a ton of apps that will move songs from iPod to computer. If you have Cocktail or are good with the command line you can unhide the songs and just drag them to the desktop. But they aren't really your songs.

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. I'm ecstatic right now. This is my first iPod. For the first time in my life, I'm walking around the house with my collection of 34 Stones cd's in my pocket. Do you remember the first time you hit 'Play' on yours?! :) Thanks again!
