I'm a student and interested in just downloading the 3.0 SDK to use and tinker with. I have 2.1 and 3.0 is still a min. $99 enrollment fee.

Does anyone know if it will ever be free like the other dev. tools?

It will be when 3.0 is released to the public – which is June 17. Until then, you have to pay the $99.

thats what i was thinking, that they'll release it with the public OS release.

But still, even with 2.1, to deploy and test on an iPhone, you have to be a paid developer.

And this will continue to be the case.

are there any other benefits to paying the $99? I'm starting to learn cocoa/iphone stuff and wondering if its worth getting while i'm stilling pretty new to cocoa programming.

Up to the point where you want to test your code on an actual device I'd say don't pay.
