why is my harddrive full??

hi, i am using panther 10.3 and i have a 80gig drive and last nite it started telling me that there is no space left, i dont know how this can be true, ive got about a gig of music and a few dvds stored on my drive but not 80gigs worth..

are there any programs that create large storage files or somthing? i really dont belive ive used 80gb in extra stuff, ive added it up and it comes to around 30gb but that leaves the extra 50gig or something

any ideas?

i have a G4 iBook with the 40 gb hard drive. the other day i had about 14-15 gigs left, and as of last night i have about 10. i am almost certain this can't be right as i didn't install any applications (at least not large ones) and am not sure what else could be causing the discrepancy.

i guess i'll go through and add up how big all my folders are. sigh.

download any of the disk space folder apps from versiontracker. i use 'where is my Disk Space?' and its pretty good.

ok ive located the problem i think, there is a file called, console.log.0 which is 40.58GB it is located in Library/Logs/Console/username/

Is this important? why is it so big?

Its usally when you have a ton of errors happening over and over again. Open it up and see if it can tell you what the problem is so it doesn't keep happening. Then just trash it and it will make a new one.

There is a little app called Onyx can be set up to delete the log files on your machine from time to time. It also has a bunch of other nifty features such as scheduled permissions repairs. Not a bad piece of programming to have around for stuff like this.

You're probably accumulating virtual memory swap files. Check the directory /private/var/vm (you'll need to use the Go/Go to folder... menu in the Finder to get there). If you find more than a couple of swapfiles, you'll want to restart the Mac to delete them.

It sounds like you've found the problem, but watch out for DVDs you've copied. I don't know how many "a few" is to you, but they're huge and a few could easily eat up an 80GB drive.

just delete it... i had the same problem and deleted it and everything was fine... restarted and i had my space back!

Commercial DVDs are dual layer so they can be nearly 9GB each. At that rate 2 makes a dent and 10 won't fit. That is, unless you're shrinking them--which isn't a bad idea.
