Bootcamp Error: Disk cannot be partitioned

I put a new HD in about 4 months ago, and I'm trying to partition bootcamp and got this error message.. Do i need to Reformat my HD?

This gets asked quite frequently

The best solution seems to be to clone your existing OS X set up to an external drive, reformat the drive and restore the clone... then run Boot Camp Assistant again

This has the added advantage of forcing you to have a backup strategy ;)

Some have had mixed results running defrag programs like iDefrag

How do you recommend cloning my HD? I'm looking at a bunch of options but I'm getting pretty confused.

I downloaded Superduper! but could you explain to me how exactly how it will work?

It looks like I back up using it.

Then boot my mac using my Mac OS X disk and reformat my internal HD using the mac OS Extended (journaled) option..

Then using my cloned hd, restore my mac?

Is that a rough idea how it will work?

How does this differ from Time Machine? or does Time Machine do the same thing? and should i just use that?

Yes, that is how it works
And yes, you could do it with Time Machine as well
Either method would work

The point is to get your data all in one place on the HD so Boot Camp Assistant can non-destructively partition your drive
