Anyone heard of this? It's basically a dedicated version of DotA (http://www.getdota.com). There are a few videos on their Facebook page. They are giving access to the beta to FB fans once 10,000 sign up.

My friend got a key already and I was watching him play. Definitely awesome graphics and gameplay looks great. In-game audio chat is nice as well. No word on system requirements yet. Sys requirements (http://www.facebook.com/heroesofnewerth?v=info)

Got my Facebook Beta key. Tried it out a little bit tonight. Almost seems like a very nice Warcraft/CC type game (RTS).

Nice graphics, smooth interface. Very kewl offering to the Mac community. They have Windows, Linux, and OS X clients. So I'm assuming either a "Wrapper" of some sort or a universal language.

Pretty cool game. I encourage if ppl can to check it out.

On mac its using OPENGL 2.0 directly, so i don't think there are any wrappers. It's a very awesome game and it runs with everything on high on my MBP 17" :P

Yah, I was leaning more towards a 'universal' language like RealBasic (which produces several executables during compile) but maybe they actually write 3 different clients.

Either way, it's a good offering and the other games they have are pretty good too. Beats the hell out of lagging cider wrapped games.

I'm in the beta, the game is an almost exact clone of DotA with the same gameplay and heroes/items (just renamed), some even look exactly the same (like Pudge, called Devourer in HoN). The interface is modeled after Warcraft III and the engine feels very similar to it except for the more serious, darker graphics.

Heroes of Newerth is basically a remake of DotA, it's almost the exact same game minus a few heroes missing from DotA and others that are new to HoN.

Overall, a nice game, the community right now is still 80% DotA elitists which really detracts from it quite a bit but once the game is released we should get normal, sane people.

I was more of a solo player in Warcraft 3 which is why I never took a liking to DotA but now that it exists on a completely separate world, it's much easier to get into it.

P.D: I have one invite I could give out, I will give it away randomly to one of the first ten people to shoot me a PM, that should make it more interesting/fair ;).

I installed the game in Vista on Boot Camp initially, but it was kind of laggy at times. Then I installed it in OS X just to see what it was like, and the graphics were much better, so I think I probably have to upgrade the drivers in Vista. It still is laggy when there are like 6-8 heroes on screen and they're all casting a spell, but normally it's fine.

I played DotA off and on so it was easier to transition to. It's a fun game.

Some useful stuff I found out:
- Press F6 to toggle stats, friends list, etc.
- Control-F8 to toggle console.
- While in console, type "host_drawfps 1" to show FPS
- Command-F to go to windowed mode (and back to full screen)

I've been a huge fan of dota/ wc3 for years now and hon looks like a great upg to dota, i doubt it will replace it completely but, some of the new things it offers will really make it a great upgrade. Some features I saw were that if you disconnect form a game you have 5 minutes to reconnect, this will be a great feature considering a lot of ota games get ruined due to disocnnects. there wil lalso be in depth stat tracking and a new ladder system which many peple will be looking forward to.

Right now, it defenitely has more potential then dota. They are not limited by an old engine / operation system. As well, they combine chat functions (i.e. ventrilo), game hosting options (battlenet/garena) and well dota with nicer graphics. Been playing this a lot with friends and it's really fun :p. Only, they give out way too few betakeys sofar :S

Does anyone have an idea of the rough release date of this game? Also, does it work offline as a single player game against a computer AI, or is it online only?

Right now it's online only, the local option is greyed out. Although it's not hard at all to log in, create a private online 1v1 game and start it with noone else in the game.

Of course, that's assuming you have an internet connection when you want to play.

It's a relatively demanding game, it barely plays on medium on my first gen Macbook Pro (running on Windows mind you).

i think i read few days ago that they'll be giving out one free invite to the current testers, though i've yet to see anything.

by the way, do any of you have rendering issues on your macs? ex: black water fountains (lower left starting point) or pixelated water ripples (top right starting point)? also the sales ad screen when you log in shows a few white squares when there's some special effects going over each bulletin. one of the forum mods said that it has something to do with graphics settings (i was able to fix the two problems with this, but not the white boxes) on my radeon based mac. hopefully they can somehow fix it on their end as well so that there wouldn't be a need to omit some of the special graphics features.

Ever heard of Defense of the Ancients (DotA)? Well if you ever played it I would try and get a beta key and start playing this game. Heros of Newerth is a DotA clone and they did a very nice job with graphics, sound, and heroes. (Most heroes were almost directly copied from DotA).

Being in closed beta I was surprised they have already released the mac version. If you guys are looking for RTS/RPG/FPS (weird combo, I know) then I would check this game out.

This game is gorgeous - but I have never played DotA so I stink and the kids playing this game are ruthless!!! :D

It ran perfectly on my uMBP and runs great on the pokey 2400xt on our iMac. My 10 year old loves it.

If I have invites I'll post back here. $30 + free to play sounds reasonable.

Yeah, its pretty intense. It's funny. actually. that just a couple of months ago this game was just released. and all my friends were into in it and got it right away, like the beta key for instance. ME a mac owner, i thought that the game wouldn't be supported by mac right away, i thought it would take awhile like other programs, and hopefully by that time it would become a open beta game.

turns out it does support mac! the graphics are just out of this world!! but now its too late to get your hands on a beta key, dang it! :( if ever you got a MAC and a BETA KEY, YOU MUST PLAY THIS GAME!! I just love technology nowadays. :)

Hi guys..

Been gaming since I was 13, played WoW, Counter-Strike, Subspace and DotA. I guess you'd call me an online gaming addict. I haven't touched any games for about 4 years now as I've been too busy for it. Recently my job eased up on my and I have some spare time in the evenings so I thought what the heck.

I used to use PC to play games and only invested in a Mac 2 years ago (Love it - never going back to PC), and I came accross this forum whilst searching for a good online game on the Mac.

So - I'm here, with only one post.. asking a favour - for a Heroes of Newerth beta key. I see that some of you guys have a spare one and would really appreciate it if you could share it with me. I can't offer you much except my company online and someone to play alongside...

Yeah I've been playing it for a while. I really like the interface, and the polish. The community is far less elitist. The learning curve is much easier as well. I'd consider it a casual-gamer's DotA.

Hey all, my friend turned me onto this game awhile ago. I played a lot of DotA back in the day and I'm enjoying it so far on my PC. Haven't had time to install the OS X client on my MBP as of yet.

Does anyone know why HoN on my mac book isn't working? When ever I click it, the screen becomes black like it's about to let me play but than, a little window pops up and says, "OpenGL 2.0 not available." It's really annoying and I would really appreciate if someone answers back quickly. Thanks(:.

hey when i get into the game, it seems like almost everything doesnt show up on my screen. my hero only shows a section of his body, most of the buildings are like half there, the towers only show the crystals at the top. its really weird. i tried poking around with my graphics settings but nothing worked, anyone have this problem? any solutions?

i have an iMac with ATI Radeon HD 2400, 2.20Ghz processor, 1G ram

I know a lot of people played the Warcraft 3 custom game DoTA. It was pretty well known in a lot of gaming circles.

A standalone remake by S2 was developed known as Heroes of Newerth, currently in open beta. They have a great OSX client, something I was glad I didn't need to boot over to XP to play.

Awesome game, highly highly competitive by the way, not friendly to new players. But I suggest it to everyone.

Gorgeous RTS style gameplay, and for those who play/have played DoTA, you'll be able to pick it up right away.

Lemme know if any of you have it and what are your thoughts.

Although I don't like DotA for various reasons, I think I will like HoN.
I'd like to play the closed beta but I missed out, it looks interesting :p

I personally i'm more of a league of legends fan. Bootcamp however is the only way to play it. Their isnt any clear plans for mac client http://www.leagueoflegends.com/

i play dota a lot and am not such a big fan of HoN. i feel that there is weak game balance, a needlessly complex UI, and they dumbed the game down through the removal of animation frames for attacking and casting

i like to compare the removal of animation frames to versus fighting games like street fighter, tekken, super smash bros, etc. imagine if a weak jab and power smash both animated instantly and took the same amount of time to activate. the game would be reduced to one move that trumps all others because you remove the depth of timing and reaction. HoN is alike in that respect, the instant animations removes the gameplay depth of timing, animation cancelling, movement, and unit collision and reduces it to "right click attack"

Totally respect your opinion, I know a lot of people who still prefer DoTA over HoN. But there are a couple wrong facts, and trust me I play both.

The UI is very complex + large, however, you can customize it now with add-ons. Removes pointless UI art blocking your view and so forth.

Also, I'm not sure where you got the idea of "instant animations."
All units have attack animations that are NOT instant, and can be canceled using S or H depending. Also, there are cast time animations that can be interrupted and canceled.

In case you don't believe me, there is an item known as Behemoth's Heart (remake of Heart of Tarrasque) that when equipped by any Intel hero provides them with a 15% reduction in cast time animation. Why would they have that if all animations were instant?

Honestly they've taken all of the things that make DoTA a fun and competitive game and fixed the problems.
-Rated accounts that record wins/losses + kills/deaths
-If you leave a game pre-maturely it will affect your standings and prevent you from joining certain games
-3 minute reconnection window if your comp crashes or have a internet connectivity issue.
-Stand-alone servers so that if they host d/c's the game continues as normal.

Way more stuff, but just wanted you to know about the animations and stuff, no idea where you heard that from, no one would play this game if that were the case.

Yeah I was just gonna comment on that, attack and cast animations are there, they're just running at a higher framerate than WC3's and you can still use S/H to animation cancel.

Some heroes even had their animation times ported EXACTLY, time Zeus' and Thunderbringer's animation, TB's looks much smoother and faster but they are actually the same length.

It's just one of the amenities of a newer graphics engine ;)

I've been playing this game for almost 6 months now and I can't get enough, it's a really fun game.

It is really bitter when you're learning, I almost quit during my first month but now I have a solid community to play with and I've gotten much better at the game so I'm past that phase, now it's all fun fun fun.

Matchmaking is being implemented pretty soon though so that should solve a lot of issues with the learning curve.

ok, i don't mean instant attack animations. i've only played about 5 games of hon, but what i've noticed is that every hero i've tried has the same timings for the backswing and forwardswing, making them hit very quickly. in dota there is a lot of depth and mechanics in manipulating animation timings, which i have just not seen at all in hon, though this might be because of my inexperience. it is significantly easier to last hit in hon because of these animation timings

The open beta is active right now, so beta invites are no longer necessary.

I just upgraded to the newest version after having not played for several weeks. Lots of new changes! New UI, matchmaking and tutorial.

Has anyone noticed any changes with 10.6.3? I played a game and it seemed a lot laggier than before, but it could have just been the HoN changes and not OS X.

The same here. Specially after the last update the mac client is really laggish and sluggish! I will try now the windows version and I'll report any differences. I use Vista 64 on bootcamp. Nevertheless I'm very disappointed because previously the game was flawless. Now even at low settings it's not playable! Why S2? I own a mbp with 8600 GT 512 KB and 2,5 Intel core 2 duo. Before the latest update everything was ok on highest settings!

I get a lot of lag, even on the 9600, but I'm almost certain it's related to S2's servers, not the graphics card.

same here guys, its been laggy for me ever since the new update or 10.6.3.. i have no idea why.. i used to be able to play on highest settings no problem, now whenever there's alot of heroes on the screen casting spells it becomes sluggish... anyone tried the windows side to see if it has same problem? tried searching on HoN forums, didn't find anything.. btw are you guys planning to buy the game at all?
