Im curious. So I signed up for the developer account at apple.

I DID NOT pay the $99 (yet), as I am still working on ideas for an app I want to create, and was told by some people that as long as I had the developer account even if I didn't pay the $99 that I could if I got the file install the 3.1 beta OS, and that when it asked me to verify my developer account that login would suffice. I'm kinda curious to play around with 3.1 so I can get a good feel for it as I come up with my ideas for my app.

Any of you know if that's true or not and if it would work? If it means no matter what I gotta pay the $99 I will probably just suck it up and do it (which I plan to do eventually anyways)

Since the xcode is free, 99$ is a bargain. Plus, you can test on your device.

True, Im just starting out and cash is a bit tight my hope was to wait to pay until I was closer to coding it all out and getting it ready to test as it's going to be a paid app.

As far as I know, there isn't any way to get 3.1 without paying the $99. There are rumors floating around that it'll be out next week, so you might not have to wait long.

And regarding making your app before signing up for the dev program: don't expect to be able to switch from the simulator to the device seamlessly.

Most things are the same, but there are some quirks where one thing works on the simulator but not on the device, or vice-versa. Also, the simulator's performance is tied to your Mac's processor. If there's something wrong in your code that causes a major slowdown, you may not discover it until you thought you were ready to ship.

Other than that, the simulator is great new devs to get their feet wet before spending $99. Just make sure you do extensive testing on the iPhone/iPod itself before you submit. :)

3.1 is not that much different. Just code for 3.0 and you will probably be fine, especially since you are just starting out. I doubt you will even be pushing the boundaries of 3.0 for quite some time.
