Where can we download the new iPod software?

I don't think the 1.2 (?) iPod updater will be available until late August, when both 10.2 & the new iPods ship.

The calendar functionality itself won't matter until iSync & iCal are released, which is in Sept. :p

I want iCal NOW. It's so mean to show it off and how cool it is, and then say 'you've gotta wait until September'... grrr. And I want the clock for my iPod now, too. Does iPod already recognise Smart Playlists? Maybe I will check this myself.

yes, I am definitely looking forward to the clock feature, although I don't understand why they couldn't have just put it on the top of the screen... having it stay on when the ipod is off would be a nice feature too (if it didn't use much power).

Well, I think that they shouldnt have put the time so deep in the menu!

It shoudl have been placed ot the top next to the power or battery symbol!

We might need to start a charity fund to get you a .mac account. It seems I can't read a thread without seeing a post from you about having to pay for something. Well, Cuba is the only communist country, maybe they have software developers that work for the state and that the government gives away for free. Personally I would rather Apple make money so that they can continue to innovate.


As for iPod 1.2, I am sad that it does not seem to support AAC. Come on Apple, I want my AAC! I would guess that this is also one of the reasons that iTunes does not support the format for ripping. When iPod supports it, iTunes will too.

basically it says that the firmware update will be available for free from apple next month (I'm assuming when ical comes out).

Audible.com reckons: "PLEASE NOTE: Apple iPod support requires an update to the firmware. Apple intends to release the firmware during the first week of August, 2002. For more information on the firmware and its availability please go to http://www.apple.com/support/ipod."

When you go to that link, it says that iPod 1.2 will be out in 'early August' - that's the official Mac word.

When I first saw mention of AAC on Apple's site, I was excited at the idea of fitting more, higher quality music on my iPod. But the more I think about it, I don't think that a firmware update will allow the iPod to decode AAC files.

Has everyone read the article (http://www.designchain.com/coverstory.asp?issue=summer02) from Electronics Design Chain Magazine detailing the internals of the iPod and Apple's design process? Here's a quote:
The rest of the device uses a dedicated MP3 decoder and controller chip from PortalPlayer

If the iPod doesn't have the processing power to decode MP3s without a dedicated chip, why would it be able to decode AAC files with just a firmware upgrade?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here, but this reasoning makes sense to me. I'm not expecting my iPod to ever read AAC files.

Yes ipod does currently recognise smart playlists in so far as you can put them on your ipod and select the playlist to update automatically. It will not however keep track of the playcount on the ipod until after the update(early Aug.)
