View Full Version : What would you like to see added to iTunes?

Just curious as to features other people would like to see.

The one thing I really want from Apple is a centralized place for managing my authorized computers. I run a G5, however I have coworkers running iTunes on Windows who would like to be able to play music I've purchased from the iTMS. I would gladly authorize their computers to play my music, however when the day comes when their computers inevitably crash (it's Windows after all), leaving me unable to deauthorize their computers, it'd be nice to be able to log into my .Mac account and manually deauthorize their computers. Right now my only option is to email Apple to have them deauthorize them, and when they do it, they deauthorize ALL of my computers (at least that's what happened last time).

Anyone else?

Every time this is asked I say the same thing. A way to split an existing track in 2 with removal of the silent bit between. Basically for use on those tracks that some bands put on last which are 30 minutes long with a 4 minute song right at the start and another right at the end.

I’d like to see nested playlists so I can organize my music better. I have many 2-CD compilations, and instead of making separate playlists for each one to organize the albums, it would be nice to have them organized better, and have them separated within another playlist. This way I could have one folder/lpaylist for the actual album, then within that playlist, have one playlist/folder for CD #1, and another one for CD #2. It’s not a huge deal, but it would be nice. I’d like to see the same functionality in iPhoto as well, so I could have a “Summer 2004” album, then multiple albums within that album for my different trips, events, etc.

For us laptop owners, 15GB of music is too much of my internal HD. However, when I'm not on the go, I can plug into my 250GB LaCie, and I have plenty of storage. It would be great if I could have iTunes load a partial library of my 'favorites' when on the go, but load the whole library when the external drive is plugged in.

Why not just use the Disc x of x tag? That's what I do and it means I don't have to create a playlist like you suggest. I just look up the album in the Library and there they are. Disc 1at the top followed by Disc 2. It works pretty well for me anyway.

But I do agree that nested playlists would be pretty nice. Just not in the same way you suggested.

i don´t know if it´s maybe me who hasn´t understood the smart playlist concept, but when i make a smart playlist (genre f.e.) it includes x amount of songs randomly. sync with ipod, good to go. great so far, but when i restart itunes the smart playlist isn´t refreshed; meaning the same x amount of songs are sitting there. that is just a playlist that i didn´t have to move the songs to; hardly a smart playlist. i´d like the playlist to refresh (mix an entirely new list according to the specified conditions) every time i start itunes. this way i´d always have a neat new playlist of hip hop, rock, classical etc. music, without having to create a new "smart" playlist everytime.

I would like to see several times more artists and tracks than available now. They should throw in as many obscure groups as they can find. Plus they should add the entire back catalog for the major labels as well. I'm sure they already plan on expanding the catalog but I hope this will happen sooner rather than later.

Acquire the rights to the entire Beatles catalog. Add the tracks to the iTunes Music Store. Buy out Apple Corps if they refuse to give up their lawsuit.

Many more foreign tracks would also be welcome. Perhaps more of these will become available as they expand but I am impatient. :p Some more radio stations would also be good.

I would like to see video content expanded greatly. Enourage people to download videos (both free and for a fee) and make playists for them within iTunes. Video news stories from several sources, many more music videos, and short entertainment and educational programs. More kids content would be great. I could see parents using a playlist filled with shuffled video clips from Sesame Street and Reading Rainbow to keep their children occupied for a while.

Some great ideas yamabushi, but I think that those upgrades are mostly independant of the actual iTunes software. Though the ability to get your favorite TV shows (24, Family Guy, etc.) without having to wait for a DVD or stuggle through Bit Torrent would be a GREAT precusor to offering full length movies.

Yes, but what if I want the actual playlists to reflect this and not have 2 separate playlists, one for each disc? I would simply like a "XYZ" playlist and then inside of it, a "Disc 1" and "Disc 2" playlists.

Or, what if I have a lot of albums by one artist? Instead of multiple albums in my root playlists, it would be nice to have a "Miles Davis" playlist for instance, then within that have a playlist for all of his albums. It would keep the main list of playlists a lot shorter and neater, as well as more organized in my opinion.

See, I just use the Browse feature in the main Library to do all that. I look for the artist i want and it shows me all of their albums in the next column and all of the songs from all the albums in the pane below. Then I can select a particular album if I like and iTunes shows me just the songs for that album (and returning to the multi-disc thing, the songs are in order of Disc1 and all of its songs followed by Disc 2's songs, unless I have it sort differently). I really only use the playlists for broader categories like "Music for Workout", etc.

Amen again on nested playlists.

I loved the CD-Text feature when it finally came to Toast, but now I find I don't use my CD player much any more. More and more CD players are getting to where they play MP3's (including car CD players), and not everyone adopted the CD-Text functionality, so this may fade in terms of desirability. Though it is cool to queue up a CD on my old 300-disc jukebox and have it display artist/title.

I'd also vote for the ability to edit MP3 files. So you can shorten lengthy songs, add a custom fade, mix songs, etc.

I would like to search their catalog by record label. I'd like to be able to see all that iTunes has that's been put out by Quarterstick or Asphodel, for example. The information is there with each item, it's just not an option in power search.

I'd also like to be able to see what has been added by day instead of by week. I enjoy scrolling through those lists and occasionally come across a band or piece of music that I had forgotten about or never would think to search for.

And more iPod give-aways. Many, many iPod give-aways. Can't be enough of those as far as I'm concerned. At least while I don't have an iPod.

just a few small ideas...

1: new visualizations - i'm fed up of seeing that orange one every time.

2: timed visualizations - like a screensaver option so if kb/ mouse is not used the visuals start automatically after a few minutes.

3: integrate the equalizer into main window so it pops up and down like the album art pane but in the song list area.

4: record radio option, recorded sections get saved as aac (at the appropriate bit-rate) and organized into a radio playlist. (probly copyright problems here though)

all minor, but would be good additions.

Also the sub-playlist idea is a must too.

What's CD-TEXT? I've never heard of it.

I only have a small request - that the reset play count option be somewhere more accessible in addition to the context menu.
Oh yeah - almost forgot - support for editing the latest version of ID3 tags (I know iTunes 4.6 creates ID3 V2.2 tags, and I have some songs with ID3 V2.3 tags).

there used to be a feature like this (can´t check at the moment). you can say when the song starts and when it stops. that way you can cut out the silent bits.

yes you can do this, but there are two problems with this

1. the file size stays the same - and most of the songs you would do this to are rather long and have minutes upon minutes of silent space

2. you would need two copies of the song in your library to work the way the original poster (and i) would want it to. you would need one for the origninal song, that stops after that song is finished, and a second one for the "hidden track"

There are 2 things i would like to see...

Something built in so that all the songs you have double one will be deleted, giving you the option which one ofcourse. i think there is already something like that but it does not satisfy me enough.

The second thing might be something that automaticly fills in the missing information from your song like album and artist if not filled in. it also has to import the artwork automaticaly. Again there is already something for the automatic album import but it sucks. its really useless as it gives you the same artwork for everything if it cannot find a song. the automatic information fill in though... that would be great! :D

CD TEXT is something most commonly found on portable and car CD players. The CD, when burned, has the album title, artist and song titles included in the TOC (or somewhere else, I'm not entirely sure). Then when playing the CD, the name of the song and the artist comes up on the display in your car. Very nifty indeed!

I would love to see alphabetical lists by artist and album not just artist or song, If i have 3 Guns and Roses albums I want them listed in album order of the year each album was released. The way it is now its either album or artist not both. Not sure if that makes sence.

Doesn't the Advanced / Check for Purchased Music feature do this? I'm pretty sure that at least, on the first computer, if you delete all the tracks, then this feature would do exactly that. So the second computer without the deleted tracks should be the same, no?

My vote: customized transition on a per song basis, a-la iMovie or Adobe Premiere. Also allow the custom start/stop times to be owned by a playlist instead of a song, so that you can cut an intro/out-tro from a playlist but keep it there when you listen to the album (this one's for every song P. Diddy's ever done. ;)). Oh, and finally make both work on the iPod too. :)

I second ideas regarding the videos tho. Maybe make the downloadable video tied to the song? Also make it so that the viewable videos are searchable and tied to the songs. Right now the LIFO of the videos section in iTMS has all the organization of a JCPenney store rack. :(

Allowing me to create my own columns. This coupled with more depth in organizing the library. I can organize by Album within artists. I'd then like to be able to put the albums in chronological order rather than alphabetical. For those artists who put out more than one album per year, this could become complex. But hey, Apple can figure that out. Right?

I think this just looks to see if you have music that you purchased, but have not downloaded yet. It is a useful feature for people on dial-up so you can buy now and download all night. They should expand that feature though to allow you to redownload purchased music.

1. Automatic de-authorisation of computers.

If a computer dosen't access the internet within three months, it will be deauthorised. This is so, if a computer completely conks it, and is still authorised, you don't loose the ability to play music, on one less computers. Does this make sense?

2. Native WMA (Unprotected and Protected) and Vorbis (OGG) support.

This is self-explanatory. And no, I don't want conversionn to AAC, I want native playback.

3.The ability to download multiple music libraries to one iPod.

So I can download my Brother's iTunes library and my iTunes library to one iPod, so when we go on car trips, we both have access to our music/playlists, in the car (Not every family can afford multiple iPods. We don't even have an iPod yet. I'd prefer an iRiver, but I would also like to get something my whole family can use.

4. Shared libraries on one computer.

Me and my brother both import all our music to one folder, and use that as our library, so we have the same collection of music. If he imports a CD, I have to select add music to library to get it to show up. it would be nice if when he imports a CD, it shows up in my library. However, I still want us to each have our own playlists, and ratings, etc...

5. Import from MP3-CDs.

I know you can just copy the MP3s over, but it would be even better if you could just stick an MP3-CD in, and auto-copy the files off it, and into thier proper locations in the library folder structure.

6. Seperate Stop, Previous Track, and Next Track buttons.

When I am working of my library (creating playlists, sorting music) and I need to pause my music; I have to stop what I'm doing, go to the playlists I'm listening to, and hit pause. It would be nice if I could pause from any part of the library, if you know what I mean (And I know you can open the playlist in anouther window, but I don't want to clutter everything up with additional windows).

7. Have the visualiser in the Source coloum on the left.

This is so it can be doubble clicked, and opened in a seperate window, so it can be placed onto anouther monitor.

8. Output Audio to a seperate sound device.

I know I could just buy an AirPort Express, but sometimes, I may want to play music, that everyone in the room can hear, through a sepearte set of speakers, while all other sounds from other apps goes through the default sound device, and into my headphones, so no one else can hear my other apps. Programs like Winamp, Windows Media Player, and Quicktime can do this, so why not iTunes? (I think this makes sense)

9. Auto-conversion to MP3, when burning an MP3 CD.

I have no idea why this is not included, but if you have all your music in AAC, or Apple Lossless, you have to convert it all manualy to MP3 when you burn it. Why can't it be automatic?

10. Songs in the iTMS should be at least 256kbs AAC, instead of 128kbs AAC.

128kbs? Thats crap! Even if here in Australia we did have the iTunes Music Store, I'm not paying for music that low in quality!

And Finally, I have a suggestion for a new product:

iTheatre

iTheatre would be like iTunes, but for video files! It would be exactly the same, as iTunes in every way, with the exception of a video window, to play back video in. The Video window should also be detatchable from the main window, so it can be placed on a seperate monitor.

There could even be an iTheatre Video Store, where you can buy episodes of TV shows, etc...

It could also create a path for the possible AirPort Express with AirTheatre! That could be in addition to the AirPort Express with AirTunes. The AirTheatre unit, would be the same as the AirTunes unit, but without the audio port, and with a scart connector.

Well, I'm finished. I hope you all like my ideas.

Well, I'm finished. I hope you all like my ideas.
1. Good idea. I want to see this too.
2a. Not going to happen. EVER.
2b. This is plausible, and in fact requires only an OGG plugin for QuickTime.
3. Unlikely - Apple doesn't intend for iTunes to be used in this way.
4. Same as #3.
5. That would be a nice feature, and fairly easy to implement, I'd imagine.
6. Huh? You can ALWAYS pause a song that's playing or change tracks, no matter what view of your library is selected.
7. Agreed there.
8. QuickTime is capable of that? I was not aware of that feature. Since iTunes uses QT anyway, it would be easy to add.
9. Another good idea. Anything that makes the user's experience easier and more seamless is a good thing - this is definitely one of those things.
10. Nope, not going to happen. The music labels will make sure of that.
iTheater: Will only happen when 90% or more of all internet users are on broadband, so don't expect this for a while.
<EDIT>I found an Ogg Vorbis plugin for QuickTime here (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=41359).</EDIT>

Every time this is asked I say the same thing. A way to split an existing track in 2 with removal of the silent bit between. Basically for use on those tracks that some bands put on last which are 30 minutes long with a 4 minute song right at the start and another right at the end.

I would like this too, some tracks have talking or parts of another song on it (like on a live album) and it would be nice to be able to split/edit tracks.

This is frickin' brilliant. I've been worried about just this happening with my 30GB iPod and 40GB iBook. I'm not there yet, but the day will come when I run out of storage. This is a great concept for managing it all. And it seems like you could do it programatically...I dunno...combine most recent additions with top rated with most played.... SOmething like that so it would automatically manage with songs go on the external and which go on the main drive....

You have to just make iTunes not try and move all the songs to it's own location. It'll just end up referencing them in their original location by full path. If the drive is there, you're golden. If it's not, you'll probably have a bunch of exclamation points all over and iTunes will just skip past them.

Probably not ideal, huh?

You could even use the Group field to mark which are local and which are on the external, and build playlists around that.

If you want to edit the length of a song, click the song go command i (or option on windose) click options and there are fields for start and stop playback.

If you want to know what playlists a song is in, right click the song, (or control click for the single button mousers) and if the song appears in a playlist there will be a field called "playlists" and you go to it and it opens a new column and shows every playlist the song is in.

The thing I want added to iTunes, is a convert and replace option.

I recently went through all the music on my computer and noticed that I had 600 songs converted at 192kbps or above, and almost 2000 convterted at 160 kbps (all mp3 files) I decided that I wanted to go to aac for my whole library, and have created many smart playlists to help me keep track of everything, but when you convert a song, you ahve to manually put it in every playlist it old one was in if you are converting to delete the original.

ALSO say you have listened to a song 100 times, and you convert it. Well the playcount is at 0, this makes sense, but if you want to replace you entire library with a different format and trash the old songs, it takes a LOT of time to sort through everything.

So a option in importing songs could be: convert and replace
when you select this, you convert a song, the old one is automatically (i'm picturing how steve jobs says automatically, otomatically ;) ) deleted from itunes and your itunes folder, and the playcount, and playlist locations of your new songs are identical as the old one.

Oh yeah I like the multiple libraries on one iPod, but I doubt Apple would want that, they would just be like,
buy another iPod

I would LOVE a convert and replace feature, since I do quite a bit of converting with iTunes for Windows...

Now, I don't know if you can already do this, seeing as I don't spend too much time playing around with iTunes, I just listen to music. But, is there a way (a quick, easy, no playlist way) to choose a song to be played next (while another song is currently playing)? I don't know how to explain this correctly, so here is a scenario.

Say I am just looking at my library. I double click on "Slow Motion" by Juvenile. It is playing, because iTunes just works (recent switcher, mind you). Halfway through the song, I find a song by Tom Petty that I want to play. Can I right click (ctrl click) or something to that effect on the Tom Petty song so it will play proceeding the finish of the Juvenile song??

If iTunes cannot do this, I'd love to see it implemented.

I download Audible books. I'd like an ability to burn certain disks of the book instead of the whole thing at once. Say I have an 8-hour Audible book, and it burns onto, say, 7 CD's. Suppose the burn goes bad on one of them, or my kid ejects the 5th one mid-burn, or one gets scratched later. As of now, I have to burn it all again or play games with the start/end times. I'd like to just say burn disks 1-3, or disk 5, or all of them - like printing.

My list, I know some are repeated and I know some of them are not software related rather iTMS related...

(in no particular order)

1. a better way to search for videos and trailers.
2. an option to save videos.
3. a new view option for looking at album art only.
4. more album art, more art in general.
5. a customized store front.
6. a powerBook sync option (this one was mentioned earlier and I think it would be an great idea).
7. option to transfer music between two authorized computers, just like photos are done in iPhoto ( I know that this one won't happen).
8. lyrics, info about bands. they have some but i would like to see it expanded.
9. ability to search for iMixes, if there is one I don't see it.
10. an identity, basically an expansion on the iMix or community idea.
11. search by label, I think apple tried to make the music labels invisible at first but I think now it is needed.

I don't need any of that.. just thought I would take a moment to asses iTunes. I love my iTunes :)

I like the idea of burning cd's 1-3 or 5, like printing,

as for cueing songs to be played next, other than adding it to your party shuffle, there is no way to get iTunes to play a song that isn't consecutively next, next.

1. I would really love multiple Libraries, I don't think its unreasonable to completely seperate classical from other music types.

2. shuffle by selected genres.

3. Support for Multiple versions of the same tracks. Anybody actually working with music will no doubt have the experience of wanting to have both your master recordings as well as various bit rates and versions used to send out as samples. I would like a small folder arrow for multiple versions that you can open (as per the OS) to select the one to play, and or find.

Multiple versions is also relevent for those that want larger files, but also smaller portable ones for the iPod.
This could also be in the form of Multiple libraries... so Aiff for home listening, and AAC for on the move.

Shared Libraries
1. Ability to send messages to other itunes users on your network when you are sharing your library. Maybe linked to iChat somehow.

2. Be able to monitor exactly who's sharing your library and which songs they are listening to. Maybe you can do this with 3rd party plugins?

Live mixing
3. Speed and pitch control. iTunes should be able to analyze BMP. I know this is easy to implement since ipods can do it with audio books. Perhaps this could be a paid "pro" feature.

4. A simple live mixer with more control over cross fades. Perhaps this can be accomplished with a third party plugin. I know there are some decent DJ programs out there (like TraktorStudio) but it'd be nice to use my iTunes as a base. I just need some simple features.

Jukeboxing
5. Be able to select multiple sources for Party Shuffle.

6. An option to password-lock iTunes so people don't mess around with your playlists during parties. Maybe allow people to add to the end of an existing playlist (as in requests) but not change the the order of the songs that are already qued up.

Album art
7. I know some plugins let you do this already but it'd be nice if iTunes can automatically download Album covers from the internet.

-Multiple libraries. I really hate that my library, and my wife's library don't sync up automatically.

-Support for FLAC/SHN

-Continuous playback. I can't imagine downloading a Grateful Dead concert and having little tiny pauses between tracks.

-Nested playlists.

-The guy who talked about the different libraries or whatever for an external HD was right on. I'd like to be able to store all of my music on my external, and then only keep 5gigs or so on my iBook. As it is, I have 25gigs of music on the iBook--which gets annoying. I tried to do this through the 'group' on the tag--but it sucked.

sub-playlists and shared libraries would be all i need right now.

sub-playlists are actually a no-brainer, but shared libraries... apple, come on! actually, this leads to multiple libraries, but it wouldn't be so hard to think of a "shared" library that is visible to all users in a computer. not sharing outside, perhaps, but visible within the local machine that has multiple users. add a cd once and access it from any user account. this would by the way be good feature for iphoto, too.

(i have given this feedback to apple, i suggest you do the same with your wishes and ideas.)

Me and my brother already have multiple profiles/logins, but I wanted the songs, and only the songs in our libraries to sync up I still want us to have individual playlists, ratings, etc...

And about iTheartre. You wouldn't have to have broadband, just to organise your video files. You would only need broadband for downloading videos.

Join tracks!! i mean i have a 1000+ audio book split into several files, its a nightmare. I want the ability to join existing tracks (the current join only joins on import) into one so i can group the chapters together.

I know i can do this manually by copy - paste in quicktime but 1000+ files, i'll have no wrist left from my mouse :(

The ability to add video files into playlists / playback through iTunes would be sweet

also some nice auto-burning, like you select a multi-cd album, it reads the disk x of x tag, then groups the disk 1 burns , groups disk 2 burns & groups disk 3 burns etc...

Plugins for visualisations like winamp

iTunes has got to be one of the best jukeboxes out there, i know winamp is ok but for managing huge libraries, nothing touches it and its FREE! :P

To be able to re-download music that I have paid for on iTMS on one authorized computer, on antoher authorized computer, the fact that you can't SUCKS

I agree. It should keep a log of what you've downloaded so that you can download again later. That would also serve as a backup if your HD fails or whatever. At the moment, it seems to forget what you've bought as soon as you've finished downloading it (fortunately it remembers if the download is cancelled or fails!)

I second the iChat integration and ability to monitor shared libraries.

I would also like to be able to iSync my playlists between computers. This way I could set a playlist for my after work bikeride at work and sync my iPod when I get home. If there is a song on my home computer that is not on my work computer then I could see the name showing up in the playlist but being greyed out to indicate it is not available.

I would also like to see iTunes integrate with iDisk. I know most of you have GBs of music and may see this as a rediculous idea, but my home library and work library are almost identical. So when I add a new song or album at home it would be nice to have it automatically synced at work. It would also be nice to set a maximum percentage of iDisk space that iTunes could use. My 100 MB iDisk is usually about 50 MBs full. Therefore, if I set iTunes to use 25% I could sync 25 MB of music between my home and work computer daily without having to think about it. There could even be a "sync" column with a check box next to each song (like iTunes currently uses). Then only checked songs are synced.

Nested playlists are a great idea as well. It would be great for when I have people over. I can have a jazz mix playing in the beginning (a smart playlist of 20 of my top rated jazz songs) then slowly switch over to more rock music (when the Jazz playlist is done iTunes would start playing my next list, etc.).

It would also be nice if iTunes was integreated with the system clock. This way as the night goes on and my party starts winding down I can have iTunes automatically switch back to more mellow music at certain time (like 12:00). Its also a nice way to let people know its time to get going.

Lastly, I would like iTunes to have a separate library for AudioBooks and news programs. I like sometimes just clicking on my library and listening to tunes in random order. When I do this, however, I constantly have to skip past the audio books or saved AACs of "Your Mac Life". I know I can do this with a smart playlist but I don't see there being a compelling reason to have them integrated as they are.

I second this empathically.. I have one of the 1st PB 17"s with a 60gb hard drive.. I have just ordered another 40gb iPod and would love to import my entire cd collection, which would pretty much fill the 40gb..

I have a 250gb external drive that I would like to keep most of my music on.. once a cd is imported onto the laptop I would like to be able to flag it as either a favourite or not... an auto sync everytime I connect my external harddrive would be great.. iTunes could then export the actual tracks to the hard drive..

It would have to have all track listings on the laptop as at the last sync.. I could then just flag these cds as favourites whilst I am disconnected and then on the next sync they'd be copied back to the laptop for instant access.

Apple must realise the disparity between the size of the drives in their laptops and those in the ipod.. Surely
