Bootcamp and VMware Fusion

Hi,
So i currently have a bootcamp partition with Windows Vista 64bit installed and i was wondering if I got VM Fusion would i be able to run my boot camp partition in Fusion and then what ever i save in fusion can be brought up in bootcamp.

You definitely can. I’m doing it right now, albeit with Windows 7.

I'm also running Win7 Ultimate (final) 64 bit from a bootcamp partition, through Fusion 2 (although you won't get any special Aero graphic effects.)

Fusion 3 is supposed to give you full access to Aero themes/effects, as well as improve the overall performance of the VM.

I'll be getting it when it comes out on the 27th :)

I was initially running XP Pro in bootcamp. After I installed VMWare, it automatically saw the bootcamp partition and let me run it within OS X. I don't run through bootcamp directly anymore, as it runs nearly as well (for my purposes) in VMware.

It seems like there is a printing problem with VMWare/Boot Camp and W7x64. I am running the RC of VMWare Fusion 3.0 and RTM W7x64 ultimate and I can't for the life of me get the printer to work in Boot Camp where I need it.

It worked OK in Fusion and all indications are that it has to do with the printer drivers VMWare Tools installs.

Just so that you are aware all is not perfect.

So i tryed VM with my bootcamp partition and low and behold i got a blue screen 0x0000007b error. So i tryed booting my bootcamp like i normaly would and got the blue screen on the native bootcamp. So VM screwed my partition. How would i repair it. Is it easy as booting from my windows disk and repairing or do i have to reinstall. Once i get it back how do i fix the VM blue screen.

Sorry to hear that. Were you running the latest VMWare Fusion 2.0.6 I believe it is? If you are planning to upgrade to VMWare Fusion 3.0, wait until that is released next week.

The repair operation should be exactly as you describe it, boot from your W7 disc and select the appropriate option. The repair should fix whatever drivers got corrupted and are stopping the boot from happening normally.

NOTE: Always a good idea to use winclone to back up your Boot Camp partition before you make significant changes to it.

I was using the vmware fusion 2.0.6 trial. I was gonna wait for 3.0.

So i tryed the repair and it said it repaired and rebooted the did a chkdisk. It then finished the chkdisk and sat at black screen( i could see and move the cursor) for 20 minutes. IDK what to do.

Wipe it and start afresh. :( At some point it's not worth trying to fix it. In the 30 minutes you waited for it you could easily have reinstalled from scratch.

Once you have it working again make a winclone backup image to be safe. and wait for 3.0 to go live before you try it again.

Not that I am aware of. It's a boot device access error, which means that either the data is corrupt or a driver is missing/FUBAR.

3.0 is definitely faster and supports Aero, and I have used the RC successfully with W764.

Thanks for your help balamw0x0000007b error is common when you've got the wrong driver for your hard drive controller. Somewhere along the line your Windows install was told it was supposed to use a different controller than what you originally had - i.e. it may be using a SATA driver now rather than an IDE, or it's trying to use a SCSI driver possibly.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic post, but for those who are running the retail Win7 in both BC and VMWare, did you have any activation issues?

I'm running Snow Leopard, and I installed Windows 7 Professional (64bit) on my boot camp partition yesterday. Natively it works fine. No issues at all.

Then I upgraded VMware Fusion from V2 to V3, which is supposed to support Windows 7 (64bit). Every time I try to start up Win 7 in Fusion, I get a BSOD during the boot. I went back and booted it again natively, and no issues.

I suspect it has something to do with the Apple boot camp drivers having issues with Fusion 3. I hear that Apple is coming out with an update to boot camp before the end of the year to fully support Windows 7.

Hopefully that will fix this ... unless anyone has any other suggestions.

Delete the boot camp configuration and let VMWare Fusion redetect the boot camp partition. 7B error is very common and sometimes, not so easy to fix.
