I would like something where I can rather quickly evaluate ideas for furniture design on my computer.

Should I go for a 2D drawing and imitate the 3D effects or should I go for a 3D package with textures, lightning, rendering etc.?

In either case what would be the preferred software for the task?

I presume you are using os x so autocad is out of the question. maybe try vectorworks (http://www.nemetschek.net/) which is a very good program for modeling in 3D and drafting in 2D.

Actually I currently have a Wintel-machine.

I would say that the quickest way to evaulate ideas isn't on the computer. Make sketches first, don't just jump straight on the computer. Its not the computer that is creative, its you.

of course - but it would be nice to take an idea further with the computer
