View Full Version : Steam sale, again! UPDATE: Xmas sale

Well there's another sweet-as-hell Steam sale going on right now. Just bought GRID and Osmosis for £5.75. Seriously what is that? A bus ticket and a very cheap sandwich.

From the sounds of it they're having a new bunch of sales every day. Today the THQ collection is 50% off, Farcry 2+DLC is £9.99, the new Batman game is £14.99, Lucas Arts premier pack is 60% off.

raggedjimmi, do you mean Osmos? I picked up that and Grid for $9.49 US. Unbelievable deal. I'll be keeping a close eye on Steam for the next few days.

Dagless

Osmos, that's the one. It kind of has a cheap, Flash-like quality to it but it's worth the £2 I think. GRID's still downloading.

Now buy a G25 or G27 racing wheel! GRID with a wheel is completely different and better experience than with any gamepad. :)

Dead Space is worth buying. It's easily one of the better games I've played in recent years. It doesn't require much power and if you guys do pick it up, I can tell you how to get it to be mouse-happy.

Just bought KotOR today for £1.75. This whole thing is mentals, I'm looking to double my Steam collection for under £20 the rate this is going.

Left4Dead 2 is down to £22. Cheeky Valve... they just released the game!

Nov 27, 2009, 06:37 PM
They had a Christmas-New Year sale, not sure on the exact dates but back then I bought Fallout 3, L4D, Blue Shift, Opposing Force and Bioshock for £50. Bioshock was £3 .

If you can run UT3 or even Mass Effect, you can run Mirror's Edge. It's a really good game and well worth that price. It took me some time to get used to the fighting, but once I got it, it was cake. It also plays way better with a mouse, as you can quickly target where you need to jump, punch, grab, etc.

I bought Lucidity. The game looks nice, but the play style is, well, kind of lame. At $2.49 I figured I'd give it a try, but I really would rather see a more traditional 2D platformer here, not this lazy game style.

I already bought Secret of Monkey Island "DOUCHE" edition at $9.99, or would have picked it up at this new price. Just to ramble further, it really ticks me off that the team that reworked this game were not only sloppy -- probably because they were rushed, but they really had no clue to who Guybrush Threepwood is, let alone a basic understanding what kind of game they were remaking. The updated controls are also quite bad and actually add more steps to get something done than the older method. The team that redid this really missed the mark. Anyways, at least there's a douche-off mode, which puts the game in its better and intended state, the classic mode.

My machine won't, there's something in the U3 engine that just throws performance out the window on this computer. Bioshock (hybrid Unreal Engine 2+3) also plays poorly. Which is funny because L4D1 and 2 both run well (50-60fps).

And GRID is awesome! I've been looking for a really good quality racing game to get my teeth into. I think this is it :D.

I haven't had a problem with any UT3 based game. :o But, I need to note that BioShock's hybrid engine is kind of crap. Even though FRAPS says the game is running at 60 fps without fault, it seems to stutter here and there. It did this on my 9600GT(Desktop version, so 64 stream cores) and now my GTX275. It's just a crappy engine, especially when compared to L4D2, which like the first one NEVER EVER EVER stutters with all detail on max at 1600x900.

NOW BUY A WHEEL! :D Trust me, GRID shines with a good wheel. The forcefeed back is excellent and with the rotation set to 180 or 200, the game controls awesome. Codemasters is king of PC racer arcade/sims in my book. I'm really looking forward to Dirt 2.

Mirror's Edge is so pretty. I advise cranking up the AA and texture quality though at 1680 x 1050.

It's a beautiful game but the problem is you have to run like hell. There's no chance to enjoy it.

Torchlight went on sale for $10 over the weekend but it's still going as part of this promotion. Awesome game, and even more desirable since we won't be seeing Diablo III in 2010. I was going to wait for the Mac port but it was too cheap to pass up. :D

The Fallout 3 GOTY Edition sale is a fantastic deal if you still haven't played it. You're saving like $60 off the original prices. If I didn't already have 3 of the expansions, this would be cheaper than buying them separately.

The tinfoil hat theory is that Prey wasn't selling well (it didn't make it into the top 20 sales when it "sold out", also Stalker ran out of keys but was still on sale), so 2K decided to throw in a guaranteed big seller - Bioshock.
It is a bit odd though.

According to the forums Max Payne 2 doesn't work under Windows 7.

Also Civ 4 Colonization is stand alone. Civ 4 has two expansions though (Warlords and Beyond the Sword). Apparently if you buy Civ 4 and Beyond the Sword, you only need to install Beyond the Sword and it comes with everything from Civ 4, Warlords, and Beyond the Sword except for the scenarios from Warlords. There's no need to download vanilla Civ 4 but you do need to own it from Steam.

Edit: Actually it looks like the Civ 4 complete edition is once again ~$13 so there's really no reason not to get that if you're going to get Civ 4. World at War is on the front page now and they just removed Colonization and Beyond the Sword but they are still on sale.

But what exactly do you do in these games? Are they like Sim City, or Advance Wars or whatnot? It's like Advance Wars with city building at the start and a huge tech tree. You have to take into account a lot of infrastructure but they're improved the automation of your worker units.

Be ready for hours to complete game.

SilentPanda
Dec 30, 2009, 01:28 PM
At its basic level, you start Civilization with a settler unit and shortly place it somewhere to make a city. That city gets resources which allow you to have some money, advance in science, build buildings, and units. It's not as much city planning as Sim City. You build a building because it gives you (for instance) double food production. Once you feel your city is in a good spot you can build a settler and make another city, then start doing roads, railroads, that kind of thing. You have a whole science tree (http://www.civfanatics.com/images/civ4/techtree/civ4techtree92005.jpg) which you'll need to go through to go from throwing spears to making an International Space Station. You can also build wonders of the world which give your civilization some sort of benefit. For instance in Civ 1, I'd often build the Great Library early on because if any 2 of the AI civs discovered something, I would also get it. It's much more involved than I've described but quite fun.

If you play the game on easy you can pretty much not worry about a great deal of stuff but there are several levels of difficulty, most of which I never play because I'm that bad. :) It is turn based and there's actually a board game of it too.

There is FreeCiv (http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) which I've personally never played but should be somewhat similar.

I was going to say that everyday isn't Christmas but today's deals are in line with the previous ones. I might have to pick up Crysis Maximum.

I was going to pick up the Crysis pack until I saw the SecuROM 5-machine activation limit. Multiple layers of DRM really tick me off.

On another note, everyone here should get Shattered Horizon. I (perhaps impulsively) bought it a few days ago and it's definitely worth even the $15 I paid.

Ok, I give, I just purchased Shattered Horizon. I was going to get Crysis but I agree, that DRM really sucks. I mean, that's why we use steam isn't it, to get away from crap like that?

I would buy Shattered Horizon but it won't work on my PC (XP, and I'm not moving). HL Source would have been a definite but I own HL1 already and I find the engine more than adequate for it!
Getting Darwinia+Multiwinia though. Would have bought Crysis if not for the DRM. But there's a big upheaval about it on the Steam and EA forums so...

I know EA tried to bring people back in with some good looking games but they're still the uber d**ks they always were.

So tempted to buy Mass Effect, looks good but I don't know if I will have time to play it anytime soon. BTW I picked up Mirrors Edge the other day and tried it yesterday for the first time. WOW! Great, great game!

If you haven't played Portal, don't pass this one up, incredible game.

I hate this thread..... I've spent a small fortune on STEAM too.

So far....

Monkey Island
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Stalker : Clear Sky
Darwinia
Multiwinia
Ghostbusters
Trails 2
Braid
Crysis | Crysis Warhead
Portal
Sam & Max : Complete Pack

I'm tempted with the Eidos pack too... :(:(:(

Question about the Eidos pack... I already played through Batman AA on my PS3 and had recently purchased TR Underworld before the big sale. Do you guys still think the Eidos pack is worth it? Most of the other games really do not interest me as much as the Batman game and TR series; however I have never played any of the other games in the package. Thanks.

Deus Ex is apparently a good game but the graphics are fairly dated if that would bother you. I recently bought it and it seems decent but not sure how long I'll play it due to the old graphics. I'm sure it looked fine in the day but yeah.

The Hitman series are decent but again, older graphics. They can be somewhat frustrating as they are often trial and error in attempting to figure out what you are supposed to do.

I didn't care for Kane & Lynch myself.

I've played a few of the thief games and thought they were fine but one ended up devolving into zombies which made me quit and another bugged out on my such that it was unplayable for me.

Honestly if you've already played Batman and Tomb Raider (which are the big games there) you'd almost be better off not getting it. Mini Ninjas was okay if you like collection games but that's pretty much all that is.

Now if you didn't own Batman or Tomb Raider I'd say get it and the other games would just be extra.

Agreed! That's what I was thinking as well. Although, Batman wouldn't be a bad game to play again, especially since I did not collect everything. I am not worried about older graphics - they would probably play better on my MBP. I am more interested in gameplay - I am currently playing Uncharted 2 on my PS3 and I absolutely love this game. On my MBP I am playing MW2, Crysis and HL2 ep 1. I think Steam is such an awesome portal for gamers.

I hope for your sake you don't quit. It's such an amazing game, probably my favorite game of all time. If the graphics are bothering you, you might want to try out the high-res texture mods that exist, such as hdtp (http://www.offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/) and New Vision (http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision)

I'm sure it's a decent game and when it came out I'm sure it was phenomenal. I've only gotten through the first mission and I can see that when it came out it would have been excellent but otherwise it's kinda... whatever as far as games today go.

Apparently the next update is the final one. I'm hoping they've saved some really ace deals till last (hope we see a novelty 99% off game, like HL1).

Just got round to playing Jedi Knight - Dark Forces 2 for the first time since the demo in 1998 or so. It's actually brilliant and the level design puts Valve to shame. If I could recommend any cheap game its that.

I personally enjoy the combat mechanic a lot more in Fallout 3 than in Morrowind. I find the random flailing of a sword to be klunky. But overall the game was pretty good. For $5 you'll get a ton of gameplay out of it.
