View Full Version : Have You Cancelled your MobileMe, and Why?

I am thinking in June when mine comes up for a renew'l I might not be as inclined to renew it. Mobile is nice when it comes to syncing data, but I am not sure it is truly worth it, so the questions is
Have you cancelled MobileMe and if so Why.

i enjoy it, but when my renewal comes up i think i might not do it either. Every time my contacts sync over air and my mac, they get screwed up with names and sometimes i'll have two peoples names come up when a person calls because i have two jeffs in my phone and one who didnt have a last name somehow synced as also being the one with a last name. Its great not having to have push on, and to have the calender right there and be able to change both phone and laptop instantaneously but it still needs to be worked on.

No issue with the service either and I actually would love to renew. But times are tight and all so I am moving to Gmail and using their free services. It's not as polished as MobileMe but it will do.

I'm happy with MobileMe and jsut re-upped for another year. The way everything seamlessly syncs over all my desktops and iPhone make it more than worth it, and much smoother than Google.

Never bought it and wont. I mean, i love my iphone, but at some point you have to ask yourself (at least i do), how much money do you need to sink into the damn thing?
I pay $50 a month for data/text, plus apps that arent free, plus now i need to pay for mobile me for added convenience?? no thanks!

I like MobileMe and can say that besides the initial mess, MM has been far more reliable than Gmail this year. I also think Find My iPhone is worth its weight in gold.
I think there are better things coming to the service over the horizon and am intrigued with the purchase of Lala. Apple has a lot of patents in relation to possible MM updates and one is storing media in the cloud.

I love MobileMe and will continue to re-new it, but I think I'm one of the few people around here that use almost all of the services it provides (sync [to iPhone + 3 other computers], storage [iDisk], and sharing [iDisk, photo galleries, web hosting]).
I know I could replace it with three or four different free services, but for what little savings/month it'd net me, it doesn't seem worth the hassle.

I'm pleased with it and so I'll be re-upping.
While there's no argument that there are cheaper alternatives, I don't think any of them integrate as well with my mac and iPhone as mobileme does. I think for the price you get a lot of function and utility, at least I do. Plus I don't like the idea of google snooping in my emails/docs or their EULA stating that if I use their services, they have perpetual rights to my images, data, etc.

That's exactly what I've said the last two years...I keep waiting! I seriously doubt I'll renew next year if there isn't some significant improvements in 2010.
For me and my girlfriend, MobileMe mail is glitchy and S-L-O-W.

I allowed my MobileMe account to expire. Mostly because I didn't want to pay for it anymore. I do kind of miss it but as I said am not willing to pay the full price any longer. I am using Google Sync for push email and contacts instead and it works about as well as MobileMe to be honest.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)
I am keeping mine. One use of find my iPhone and the service pays for itself several times over. I don't like google contacts or calender, and IMO mm's photo gallaries are the nicest out there. For $60/year (amazon) or $5/month, I'm not going to waste time cobbling together other solutions.

I love MobileMe and will probably keep my subscription for quite some time. I love iDisk...it allows seamless portable files & syncing to other Macs when needed. They're really getting much better and I think they'll add functionality for streaming your iTunes library at some point. I share a lot of files over MM in the work I do and it's easy enough for others to drop things in my Public folder. I like the choice of putting a password on file shares/downloads and the ability to expire then.
Most other freelancers I know also have Macs so, for me, it's a great service. If you're surrounded by PC's all day, then it might not seem like a great value. But in New York, I work in entertainment, and the only PC's I see are when I have to go into the corp offices of someplace I'm freelancing at. And even then, half of us are freelancers and bring our MPB's in anyway. (<--- EDIT: I sound like a hipster DB, I know. But it's true. lol)
There was some glitch with syncing calendars but it seems to be fixed now and I've never had a problem w/ my Contacts syncing w/ the iPhone, cloud or GMail. Find my iPhone is a great feature but I'm hoping I don't ever actually have to use it other than when I can't find the phone in my house. lol. I don't use the Gallery as much as I probably should but I have a Flickr account so I find that better for pictures & video. I have both .mac & gmail email accounts. I like using the aliases but still have them all coming into 1 box.
In all honesty, it really all just seamless and I'm paying for convenience as well as functionality. Worth it in my book.

i just renew my sub and i like it, it works great between my mac pro and my iphone ..plus push email is real fast !!! never had any problem with syncing...
ive changed iphones several times and i like the way i get all my contacts,my emails,my bookmarks, and my calendars back just by entering my user name and password... plus the 20gb online storage i disk and many more features...
for me its worth it!!

I don't see the point of it.
Syncing calendars etc. with iPhone is good but I plug my phone into my Mac every couple of days, so no big deal.
iDisk seemed like a nice idea but I was baffled to discover that it doesn't auto-update. A file I specifically wanted available on my iDisk was a spreadsheet of my invoices, but it would mean remembering to re-drag and drop it to iDisk EVERY time I update the file (which is almost daily).
Back To My Mac - I have a MacBook Pro so don't see the point.
So I cancelled and have never reconsidered.

I debate renewing every year I always just do it. Not too interested in having to change the dozens of things I have setup with my mail accounts that use my @mac.com address as my primary address.
I wish iDisk worked more like DropBox, which I use now instead anyway. I do like the other features and also use it to sync my bookmarks across about 5 systems/laptops and I prefer Safari.
You can always get discounts on renewals at Amazon or purchasing off eBay.

If you're working on multiple Macs, then you can enable iDisk syncing to Off and you'll always be working off a synced version. If it's On, set it to update automatically so when you update the file, it's updated everywhere. When I've had to work on a PC someplace, it was a bit annoying mostly because I had gotten used to it being seamless.
But it is all a matter of preference and how you use the service. It's definitely not for all.

As a freelancer the greatest value to me is the syncing of calendars. Now I know if I have another job on the day someone calls me up while I'm on location. No risk of double booking or sayin no because you thought you were working that day.
iDisk is great for sending big files that are password protected. I could probably do all these things for free, but now it's just to convenient and easy for the relatively small cost.
I do think it can be improved a lot though

I didn't renew mine this year. One main reason:
1. I don't have a data plan on my iPhone anymore so push email, contacts and calendars doesn't really make much sense unless you're always connected.
2. Gmail is free.

I cancelled it because there is a free alternative to everything MobileMe offers. You can sync Google calendars to your iPhone, use Dropbox to sync files on different computers, a simple iTunes sync keeps my contacts synced up. And honestly I don't really care too much for push mail. I'm ok with waiting 15-30 minutes to find out I have a new email.

I haven't. I just don't have the time nor inclination to try to throw together the free stuff and get it to "sort of" work together. To me it's worth the $.21/day (if you get your renewal through eBay/Amazon) to just have everything work...

To give it a fair shot, I checked out drop box and set up the GMail push services. For me, the set up doesn't work well. To use GMail push for calendar, contacts & mail, I need to use Exchange and had to delete the email for one of the companies I freelance for. I don't always keep it there but when I'm working on a job for them, it's handy. But as far as the GMail/ActiveSync service itself, yes, it works just like MobileMe it seems.
But I also don't use push for email unless absolutely necessary (when I'm working on a job and I'm on location, etc) so it's not worth it for me to loose the exchange setup just for GMail.
As for DropBox, I've been hearing so many good things I decided to check that out as well. Very nice service. Syncs well & integrates well. It does a good job of replicating iDisk. But to get more than 2GB free a month, which I would definitely need, it's $9.99/mo for 50GB so the cost is actually more than MobileMe at $119.99/year and 50GB is more space than I need. And that's all it is...space. And I can bump up to 40GB on MM for $150/year but I don't need that.
I'm not knocking the alternatives, I just wanted to actually compare. At the end of the day, it seems using either method works similarly and setting it up is not complicated or "cobbled" together...really just 2 pieces rather than 1. It just depends on what your personal needs are.

Paid maybe $30 - $40 for a one year subscription and won't be renewing come March 31st, 2010.
iDisk is extremely slow and much less dynamic than Dropbox, the Webmail is antiquated in comparison to Gmail and I found push to be little to write home about.
The straw that broke the camel's back, however, was that Apple refused to consolidate my iTunes and MobileMe accounts. If you want me to pay top dollar for your web service don't force me to keep open my free (and superior) Gmail account.
Now if only Dropbox would offer a $4.99 /month, 15 - 25 GB account.

I renewed yesterday.
I have to be honest, one of the main reasons I keep it is because I like my e-mail address to end in @mac. Something about using free webmail (especially Hotmail for instance) that makes me take the person less seriously. Probably because that is what I had when I was younger, and my parents who have more recently obtained e-mail addresses have too.
Syncing contacts is useful, as is Find My iPhone. Office or home; where did I leave it? ;)

I had a MM (then .Mac) account for a long while and didn't renew after the botched 'MobileMe' launch last year. I signed a new account early '09 after much of the problems were addressed and the service stabilized.
I've temporarily switched back/forth to Gmail/Google Sync a few times to get a feel for it, and each time I go back to my MM account. It's not b/c Gmail is bad (it rocks, actually) but I don't particularly care for their IMAP implementation, nor do I like advertising (no matter how unobtrusive). Google Sync works beautifully with the iPhone, and is probably the best alternative to MM for iPhone users.
Calendar and Contact sync on MM is unparalleled. Calendar syncs ALL categories while Google Sync only does 'supported' categories (I have a lot of custom ones). Google Calendar requires you to set Delegates (which makes iCal look cluttered/ugly). Yahoo Calendar is probably the best alternative; no delegates, but no push support for iPhone (only e-mail).
iDisk sync works beautifully, only gives me an occasional issue when I'm on wifi at my University. It keeps all of my docs in sync between my home Mac and MBP, as well as my bloated Endnote database (which shares between the Macs great).
Next to Gmail, MM mail never gets spam....at all. It lacks a lot of the nicities of Gmail (ie. server-side filters for starters) but is simplistic and functional. I've had issues w/ it in the past (ie. SMTP timeouts) but for the most part it has worked well as a traditional IMAP server. Push has been reliable as well. I was using Gmail for a while but have slowly moved back to MobileMe....I just like not having any ads in my webmail experience. I was a paying Y!Mail customer for this very purpose for a few years but finally gave up b/c of the tons of spam I was (and still am) getting.
Is MM worth $99/yr? Probably, if you're going to use all the features (esp. if you're an iPhone owner).

Misplaced my iPhone during a road trip. We covered over 500 miles and stopped numerous times and had NO idea where I left it during those 500 miles. I had MobileMe with the awesome "Find My iPhone" feature. Pulled out the Mac, found a WiFi spot and searched for my iPhone......350 miles away. I called it, but no answer. Text it....no answer. Found out it was at the Diner that we ate at that morning. Called the diner, advised them where I was sitting and they found it and held it for me until the return trip home.
For that VERY reason alone, I will keep MobileMe services. The peace of mind of being able to remotely-wipe my phone if needs be, and being able to track it is worth it IMO.....not to mention the vast amount of other features it has.
And all for CHEAP! Seriously, it "seems" expensive being $99 for a year and you pay it up front.....but come on people, do the math! $8.33/month.....it's WELL worth it for the Find My iPhone feature alone! You will spend almost a dollar more for a number 5 at Whataburger!

If you're working on multiple Macs, then you can enable iDisk syncing to Off and you'll always be working off a synced version.
Maybe it's changed since my free trial in the summer, but it didn't do that for me. I even came onto these forums moaning about the fact it wouldn't auto-update files on iDisk and was shot down in flames!

Also don't like @me.com as the domain for the email address.
I've found people are often confused by the name (as opposed to @gmail.com, which is practically email vernacular) and in my opinion it's a be narccistic sounding.
I asked Apple if they could change my address to @mac.com, which they agreed to do, but it was an empty promise. :(

Also don't like @me.com as the domain for the email address.
Thats my single gripe with MobileMe.... they allow a custom domain name so you can host a site with mobileme using your own domain but you can't use it for email on same domain name ..... if they could add this feature they're onto a winning product ... until then its just an also ran
I'm just starting a 30day GoogleApps trial so i can have ActiveSync mail/calendar/contacts through google (at £20/year cheaper than MM which will go towards hosting site at the same place its registered) but have my own personal email address with it.

I don't know if the .mac email address are still available but I use my old .mac instead of .me. Personally I hate the .me and I would be tempted to cancel/drop it if apple decided to stop supporting/allowing me to use my old .mac account.
If I have to go through the pain and hassle of telling everyone my new email address, I'll use one that I like not .me.

I use it to host my web pages as well, so it's not really a bad value. I track two iPhones with Find My Phone, and the push email is an added bonus.
Same here, I was paying $130 a year to host my website at another site, and said let's get rid of that and move it all over to MobileMe. Gmail hadn't really come out with push, and I REALLY wanted to be able to delete or have an email marked as read on my phone and have that synced exactly to my computer back home and the cloud.
iDisk has really come in handy every so often (sometimes for work when our FTP goes down and the higher ups flip out). I think with Apple's giant Database warehouse they're building they are expecting HUGE things for their MobileMe.
Find my iPhone is a great feature, and the ability to lock and wipe the phone post-theft/loss is nice. Not that I have any confidence that if I left my iPhone at a bar late at night the battery would survive to me finding it though.
Plus my email is just my full name, no . - _ characters, and no abbreviations or extra numbers. I couldn't believe it, and I have a REALLY common name!
My biggest beef is the web interface. It's slow and when I search emails I have no idea if it's actually searching or not. Plus it locks up firefox all the time with bad scripts.

I switched from the iphone to the motorola droid so mobileme isnt as useful anymore.
the syncing between my macbook, iphone and mac mini was awesome but now that i have switched to the droid and the only mac i use is my macbook pro i get less use out of it.
the calendar and contact syncing were the features i used most.
I rarely used the webspace for pictures or site hosting and i never used the email. it was nice to know find my iphone was available in case something happened to the phone.
Now i use google for all my stuff, makes sense since im using an android phone. the google services are much better on the motorola droid than on the iphone. im pretty sure if i still had the iphone i would still be using mobileme. the free alternatives on the iphone never worked well for me. I did not like google sync and since i used my company exchange email i could not use both at the same time.
That said i would always recommend mobileme to those who have an iphone and another mac machine. I would like to see the price come down a little. i got mine on ebay for ~$55 which is much closer to what i think apple should be charging.

Well I decided to go with the Droid. So happy with it. But I do like the simple interface and lack of advertising. However 99 dollars a year is not worth it to me. And I prefer not to buy on Ebay. If Apple were to reduce the price to $49 a year I would keep it.

Think about it from Apple's perspective:
They can get $99 a year out of you and all they have to provide you with is 20GB of online storage and some crappy sync services. It's pure profit for them.
Google and Dropbox are giving these things to you for free.
By renewing MobileMe you are sending the message that you want Apple to take advantage of you. As long as there are gullible people willing to pay, Apple has no reason to deliver a better service or lower the price.
The Mac has earned its price tag. MobileMe has not.
Apple is laughing at you as they take your money.
If you have paid for MobileMe for 2~3 years you could have owned an iPhone instead. If you have paid for it for 6 years you could have owned a Mac mini instead. If you have paid for it for 10 years you could have owned a MacBook instead. Think about it. Wise up.

It's earned it's price tag if it meets the needs that you are looking for.
One of the greatest things MobileMe does is it keeps contacts and bookmarks synced between multiple iPhones and multiple Macs without having to add them to each iPhone and computer. It does it within seconds on each one of those over the air. Google and Drop Box can't do that. Well worth $99 to me.

It tracks my iPhone if I lose it, the online storage is nice but if I stored everything I needed to back up online it would cost me a fortune so I don't use it much. The biggest draw is:

Dropbox is ok but there are some security features that could be added. Mozy allows own private keys while Dropbox sends things in plaintext(?)/with their own encryption key, and with the web interface, the possibility of your stuff being accessed is high.

I'm using the trail right now. At first I was really into it, and loved the photo gallery. But now I'm having all sorts of weird problems with the gallerys and no one seems to be able to help me, so I'm thinking it's just more trouble than it's worth.

I'm thinking of.
My hopes of future upgrades to MobileMe:
* multiple domain names for web sites
* ability to use alternative domain name for email address
* usable iDisk, its been crap since day 1.. and Apple have never addressed this - just way too slow to be usable

I've been a MobileMe subscriber for almost a year now and I'm definitely renewing. I haven't had ANY problems, and yet I read about all kinds of glitches and down time with Google's services. Google may be luring everyone to their services, but don't think for a minute that these services are FREE. It's only a matter of time before privacy becomes the cost of using these services. I'm glad that there are alternatives to Google, but it's pretty scary that everyone seems to be trusting Google with more and more of their personal information.

I've had mine since the summer (august or so), and the main reason I still like it is I can sync my address book, calendar, and other from my iPhone to a Mac. I also like being able to sync from one mac to another.

I am on my second year. Purchased at a discount on ebay.
The sync with my two PC's, iphone, Mac Mini, and the Cloud is nice.
I like the idisk for storing, sharing moving files. I do not use it alot, but does make it easy.
I use the gallery alot for a backup and organized photos. Also makes it easy to share a recent event with others and they upload their pictures.
My problems:
1. Gallery names will not sort alpha numberic. (no reason not to).
2. Browser viewing of MM can refresh alot and totally lose your calendar entry and I use Safari only for it.
3. Safari is the only broswer thats stable with MM (warns you not to use IE)
4. Needs a To Do list (With reminder or roll over option).

Honestly, MobileMe's different features can be duplicated by free/cheap alternatives. However, I just like having it all in one place. If you plan on migrating to a new computer, I'd use it or at least the trial. It made transferring all of my contacts rather simple.
I do think Apple needs to lower the price. It should be included in the purchase of an Apple Care plan for a mac.

With family scattered all over the country, MM Gallery is an easy way to share photos. iDisk may be slow, but my stuff is stored off the premises. I have a .mac email address. And it's all integrated and easy to use. I likes it! :)

So, how is using a BlackBerry with MobileMe?
(I've got five Macs and two BlackBerries [and I don't want to get involved with AT&T never, ever, again, period.]) :D

I elected not to renew because I realized that a different paid hosting package would give me a heck of a lot more for about the same price ($99/year), and this hosting package I'm on now meets my needs a lot better than MobileMe ever did.

I've been a .mac subscriber since 2006, and I'll renew again in August 2010. I find the OTA sync incredibly useful for keeping my Macs and iPhone singing from the same hymsheet, and I use the webspace.

I don't plan on canceling anytime soon. My grandparents pay for a family account (even though we only use two accounts at the moment, and I'm the primary), and they told me I can just stay on theirs since I helped them with their Mac.

I cancelled because I don't see the point of it.
Back to my Mac - I have a MBP so I'll either have it with me or it'll be asleep under the sofa and therefore unaccessible.
Email - I don't want @me.com as my address, thank you.
iDisk doesn't auto sync/auto update so I was having to save everything twice - once on my MBP and once on iDisk. Also, uploading data to it was painfully slow (even on my 10Mbps broadband).
Calendars and Contacts aren't so urgent that I need them sync'd immediately. I can wait to plug my iPhone in to my computer.
Sharing files/photos - there are SOOO many free ways to do this already.
Find my iPhone - I like the idea of this but can't help thinking that, without my iPhone, I won't have the net access necessary to find my iPhone.
I'd rather save the £60 per year.

I'm happy with MobileMe and when it's time to renew I definitely will.
I get my licenses on eBay or Amazon. Usually can find a better deal. If eBay just make sure it's a trusted seller where they can send the actual box and it's a full account not a shared family account.
Email is great - I don't exclusively use the @me address to reply, but I do have all my accounts forwarded through my @me address. Push is flawless.

i enjoy it, but when my renewal comes up i think i might not do it either.
Yep. Two people's names on my iPhone as we speak. No issues with Macs. The company has so much cash in the bank. Can't they put some money towards getting this thing right?!

I didn't renew mine. It was just too painfully slow to use. iDisk was completely useless to me for that reason. Especially if you travel a lot and have to access files from out side the US. Dropbox works so much faster and it's free.
A few changes in the iphoto gallery and it took ages to sync with MM.

It sounds as if you were just using iDisk as a remote disk, rather than enabling folder synchronization. Once enabled... access to your data would be as fast as access to your hard drive.

I've just started using Google Sync for work, so it actually co-exists on my iPhone with MobileMe (re-upped last fall with the $60 Amazon special).
There are two reasons why I'll probably keep MM - find my iPhone (in the VERY unlikely situation where I lose it), and for battery purposes. Google Sync is a major drain on my battery (probably that way for anybody using an Exchange server).
Aside from those two things, I really don't see what MM has that I can't get cheaper someplace else. iDisk was very disappointing for me - I like how it mounts as a local drive, but the access speeds are terrible, even when I'm on a T1.

I'm happy with MobileMe and jsut re-upped for another year. The way everything seamlessly syncs over all my desktops and iPhone make it more than worth it, and much smoother than Google.
Same here! I mean it would be nice if they improved the web-based mail access site and maybe add a bit more tools and functions.
It is quite pricey for what it is.
But on another note it's so simple and easy to use!

I use Mobile Me and I like what it is supposed to do. The gallery is a great place to put pictures, quickly from your iphone, share the album with friends so they can upload and download. Idisk is fine for moving files around and the mail and calendar sync fast.
My problems with it are little annoying things that end up wasting my time and the web interface is HIGHLY unstable (which I just totally do not understand).
My main issues are why can the Gallery not be sorted in alpha numeric order?????? I have to scroll up and down (and I have alot of albums on there) to find the correct album. This issue is on both the iphone and MM.
When I upload pictures I get the "Unable to Contact MM" EVERY TIME. You click out of the error message and then hit "cancel" and your upload continues, but you have to do this constantly and if you are not watching it then it just waits.
The calendar will refresh when you are entering items forcing you to totally start again and I cannot tell you how many times it decides to change my start time of an appointment that I am entering to the "current" time on my computer.
They push out new apps for MM on the iphone, but they do nothing to fix MM. Hopefully they will wake up and fix it.

ilocalis does not have all the features of Mobile Me.
Mobile Me would be a really good service if it was more stable and had some logical usage items corrected. I think its a low priority at Apple.

I just got my renewal in the mail today from a trusted seller on eBay. Still wrapped in plastic and everything. Family Pack. $82 shipped. Check out my signature. MobileMe is the best thing for keeping all that stuff synced.

i'm surprised no-one else has mentioned this. google mail is not free. you are paying for it by submitting your personal information, which will be searched through at google's will (along with all the information they have gleaned from your web searches and from your visiting sites with Google Syndication and/or Google Analytics) and used to build a profile of you.
i asked myself, how much i pay to my information out of the hands of a company like google? £59 per year is very reasonable for that ^_^
that said, MobileMe's email service is very poor. the biggest problem I had was with my outgoing emails being blocked by MM's spam filter, so many of them never seemed to arrive (others have had this problem too - anyone here have this?). Apple also will not let you use your own domain name for your emails (does anyone know why this is?). so i don't use MM as my main email address, only as storage for old emails.
MM's web interface is terrible too. no European date format - very annoying. and no https?! how much would it cost apple, really, to allow optional use of https, if only to reassure people...?

Hi Jim,
I'm not following you on this. How do you go about enabling folder synchronization?
System preferences > Mobile Me > IDisk Tab > Start
This will give you a "local copy" of all of your cloud data. You will be able to work on that data, even if you are not connected to the internet (ex: on a flight without internet connection). Later, when you connect to the internet, the data will sync to the mobile me servers... and replicate across your various machines.

I certainly won't be renewing. While the other stuff is nice, I use web based email alot at work for personal stuff and mobile me's web based email is hands down the WORST out there. I have daily issues with it. Right now I can't respond to an email because it tells me I'm unauthorized all of a sudden. If it can't do the simplest task correctly, makes me wonder about everything else.
Mobile Me is NOT worth the money imo.

I'm dumping mine on renewal. It doesn't do enough, it doesn't do it fast enough, and it doesn't do anything that you can't get out of other free services.
The syncing is nice, but as many others have said, I can accomplish that in other ways.
I don't think MobileMe is as good as it could be. I may reconsider it in the future if it receives significant revisions.
