I pre-ordered from Steam. Usually it will download a couple days before and then activate on release day. Nothing beats the PC for this sort of game ;)

Would Mass Effect run well on a early 2009 Mini?
JackAxe
Jan 22, 2010, 12:28 AM
Does your Mini have a 9400m with 256 megs of video ram? If yes, then yes it will run on your Mac, as that card supports Pixel shader 3.

I'm picking ME2 PC up from whoever has it locally. I was already excited about this game, but seeing them control the ship with a mouse and that it BURNS fuel, and the fact planets are fully scanable has made me freaking happy. :D
The improvements to the ship part at least is what I was hoping for in the first Mass Effect. If they add in ship battles with upgradeable ship-tech, I'll be one freaking happy mofo, but I'm not sure they've gone that far with this release.

If this is like Dragon Age, hopefully my friend will give me one of the pre-order cards. :o
I bought the soundtrack off iTunes for ME2. The music isn't bad, it's a bit somber when compared to the first. I really didn't like the music from ME until after I had played it.

Had been hoping for a Digital Download deal, I can't remember the price but I know I got something that compelled me to grab Mass Effect through Direct2Drive on pre-order ...
Guess I'll have to bite the bullet at full price unless I get a review copy (hope springs eternal ;) )

LOL... I just want best graphics with my controller. No matter what I still struggle with keyboard mouse combos. Here's why.
I'm left handed.
Controls for nearly all games are designed with keys designed for left hand with mouse on the right.
I find it gets uncomfortable after sustained play. I can't be bothered to modify all the bloody keys in every pc game either ;):p

Texture pop up is meant to be gone. Loading is lost or at least well hidden and frame-rate is greatly improved.

Not sure bout that.
However same issue (Feb) and they review Darksiders and gave it a 6/10
I think it deserved a lot more, however they did mention technical issues as they were playing / reviewing the 360 code, but 6 ? Game is definitely an 8 at least........
The only game EDGE gave a 10/10 in 2009 was Demon's Souls. So they don't give out 10/10's likely.....

I no longer believe it's actually possible to get rid of texture pop-in on Unreal Engine games, but I'll go ahead and hope it's true. :D And if they can get it to maintain at least 30 FPS on the 360, I'll be one happy Spectre.

Is it using the unreal engine this time? Or maybe like Uncharted which suffered same thing, they have likewise with Uncharted 2 either adapted/modified the engine so it's no longer an issue.
Oh.... Also there are loading screens. They got rid of the lifts which hid the loading and replaced them with glorified loading screens. However loading is meant to be reduced significantly if installed to your HDD so I'd recommend 360 purchasers do that :)

If not, that assumes that all thieves are equal and that they all steal for the same reasons. Besides, what possession -- especially one as superficial as a game -- is worth more than someone's life? Now if someone stole something that they knew was keeping someone else alive, because they knew it would kill them, that's a different story. :)

I'm with you on the politician castration! :D If anything, it might prevent some nepotism, if they were punished early enough.
Anyways, I got busted for shoplifting when I was a kid -- so a billion years ago. Since I was so young and what I stole wasn't anything expensive, they required I attend some classes. I also got a beating from my parents. Needless to say, that did the job and set me straight. :o
Same here, this is on my most play list. If not for ME, I would have probably waited before buying Dragon's Age.
I already have the soundtrack and lame comic-book they offered online, but I'm still buying the NERD edition on day one. Can't rent games on the PC. :)

I'm struggling with a choice.
Do I finish the original game (I'm not far from it) and then buy sequel on the 360 so that my game save moves over... or shall I buy the game on PC ? I have the original on PC (picked up for €5 when Steam Sale was on) but I'm not a fan of pc controls.

After a few hours of playing it, I find it to be pretty good. The way they break in your character was quite seamless, doesn't feel like something they made up just for the sake of a sequel. Technical wise, I must say they improved it quite abit on the PC version. ME1 on PC feels like an afterthought, ME2 feels a lot more polished and fast on the same computer I used on ME1. Graphics wise is somewhat similar but the first 2 teammates I met looks pretty well modeled and textured.
Still trying to get used to the combat but they threw away the inventory system which I think it's a good idea. Still haven't progress far enough to know if the new upgrade and research system is better.

You can continue your old save game. You will still be able to switch class and change your character model (due to some nicely placed storyline development :D). But most importantly is your story, mainly who is still alive, how you end your game etc. You can get some bonus for importing your character and more if you played your old character to the extreme.

After playing Dragon Age and seeing how it managed its download content, I'm wondering why ME2 didn't use the same method? I'm only at the title screen -- since I'm, waiting for my BIG-BROTHER(3 Headed demon dog) network to give me my booty. Anyways, the title screen to me looks like a cross between Dead Space and Metroid Prime 3's GUI.
I'm going to play my first game from scratch, then my second with my saves from my previous 3 playthroughs with ME.

I started a new character, because I thought it would let me play as a different person in the same universe. But that wasn't the case and now it's odd, because the STORY is different. I didn't choose to have Ashley killed in any of my playthroughs and I saved the council each time, so this universe is a bit odd. Next I'll find out Wrex is probably dead, when I never had to kill him in my games.

I dunno, I'm not pleased with the way you have ammo and need to reload now, the lack of loot, or even an equip menu aside from before a mission loads out. I have to use three pistols, one to take down shields, flip to another to take out armour then a third to take down health. It would be fine in a real shooter but this still isn't quite there. They let go of so much of the KOTORness of the first game but not enough if they wanna be Gears of War with magicks.
I started as a Vanguard but I think I would have been better off as a solider and just assault rifled my way though...

I like the game but I can't get over the fact that it feels less rpg and more shooter like. They definitely put a stop to the pop ups and freezing the first game had...great game so far.
The first Bioware game I remember, KOTOR, I really disliked the game freezes and queuing up character actions because I was more in the FPS mode, not the RPG mode. Mass Effect felt much better, more fluid, but in Dragon Age Origins, I'm realizing that setting the option so that action freezes when combat starts is important if you want to have a say in what each of your characters do initially in a fight.
For example, say you want to have all of them focus attacks, in DAO you can sic them them on the same mob. Basically I'm not a party micro-management person. I would much prefer to only worry about my character but I've seen in DAO that party management can make a difference regarding the outcome of a fight.
Can you do this in ME2 if you want? In comparison to DAO I wonder how important party management is in ME2 as in it makes a difference or you don't need to worry about it if you don't want to?
Thanks!

I seriously doubt it, and can't imagine why? It really is an action-shooter first and foremost. I'm only a few hours in and having a blast - it really has improved on many of the weaknesses in the design of the first one (and contrary to some, I never thought that being a deep traditional RPG was the plan)

I played quite a bit more now and I'm still enjoying the game, but I really agree with what you have to say.
I recall that they stated the overwhelming feedback from a survey they submitted was for more shooting -- my guess is that it was submitted early on when most 360 guys were still infatuated with GoW. :o

I put in 3 hours last night and I'm impressed. It's a good story with lots of action and very little repetitive game play. The levels all look very polished and the art direction is superb.
I don't have a ton of time to play games anymore, so I like the summary you get at the end of a mission. Also, the "RPG-lite" setup of the game is perfect for the casual player. I get to manage my team, but I feel like this is a game you can come back to after a month off and start playing immediately.
Well done Bioware. Fun game.

One complaint has little to do with Bioware or the game itself ... I'm only a few hours in but I feel like I can't move 10 feet without triggering some 'Achievement' popup ... I'm not a fan of them to begin with since I think they tend to influence gameplay in a negative way, but generally I can just play the game without then constantly annoying me ... but not in Mass Achievement 2!

I'm playing the game at 1600x900 and those LAME achievements take up a large portion of my right screen when they announce that I just walked 2 inches!
The first ME didn't bother me, but this one does, at least the same or even more so than GFWL, which in SFIV they were annoying to no end.
I'm grinding planets for minerals right now. I'm enjoying it! :) It along with the ship flying and the difficulty make up for their "streamlined" way of handling weapons. I'd still like to see weapon stats though. :( And why the hell was there a weapons locker half way through one of my missions? That was just silly! An inventory system would have eliminated the need for that cheese.

Well finished the first game short time ago....
I Kept Wrex on side.
Saved the council from doom.
Shepard alive & well in the end
Ashley alive.
Bedded the alien.....
Now to see how my future pans out in ME2 :)
Hey, that's my game! THEIF! :)
On the PC version of Mass Effect 2, they changed the key-mapping, so if you're you've played it on the PC prior, be ready to rethink some of the keys. At first I thought they had removed weapon holster and the tactical screen, but they just remapped them.
OH, and I think that it was a poor choice for the developers to map Use/Spring/Cover to the same key. It has already caused my death a few times, because I was running to one point, but was too close to a cover point and the next thing I know I'm glued to the wall out in the open.

:D Oh, I missed the 1900 part. It's a 1600x900 LG LCD for my PC.
The resolution I stated is messed up. Not even my HD 30" supports a vertical rez that high.
I'm 1920x1200 :)
I haven't tried 2560 x 1600 but wonder if my GTX 295 can do it with everything in uber mode.

I dunno, I'm not pleased with the way you have ammo and need to reload now, the lack of loot, or even an equip menu aside from before a mission loads out.
I've only had a little time to play this so far (my preorder arrived faster than I expected for the free shipping :D) and only made it as far as when you board the Normandy, so I won't judge the game much yet. But I spent almost that whole time wondering where the Equip screen was. Granted it got to be pretty tedious keeping up with all the loot and gear mods in the first game with the interface that they had, but remove it entirely? Hmm. It certainly does feel more Gears of War and less RPG. I'm sure I'll still like it though. I'm impressed by how much better and smoother it is on the 360 and saving no longer freezes the game! Yay! And the armor appearance customization is really cool, although I'll probably be wearing the Terminus or Blood Dragon armor for a while.
One complaint has little to do with Bioware or the game itself ... I'm only a few hours in but I feel like I can't move 10 feet without triggering some 'Achievement' popup
Ugh, yeah. You get several achievements in the first like 30 minutes of the game for doing barely more than watch some cutscenes and walk across a room. Achievements should not exist for doing things you do in a normal playthrough. Prince of Persia was pretty bad about this too.
Anyway, while I was waiting I started up Dragon Age and now I'm not sure what I want to play more, not to mention Bioshock 2 very soon too.

Initally I thought the ammo system would be a step backwards, but playing for about 10 hours in. I think it's not a bad move, kept me on the toes and learn how to use my powers and weapons to minimise my ammo usage. I also like the part where you can customized your powers list, pretty cool.

LOL, the gas in the suit. I've looked at the concept art and they have human faces, but I wonder if that changed in the final, maybe it's a lizard type creature? :)
GO BACK AND FINISH THE FIRST! :D I'm still encountering story elements in ME2 that make this new universe slightly off.

Well I played all day yesterday, acquired a bunch more dudes. Overall I am enjoying it but the action is really weighing on me. It's just not fun. The game doesn't have the satisfying punch that a real action game has as the guns (save the sniper rifle) all feel weak. How does it take a whole clip from an assault rifle to kill a guy? Okay, I know, I should go for head shots... but honestly...
The lack of RPGness makes me sad to no end. Before bed last night I played some ME1 on the ol' PC which made the action in ME2 even more depressing. In ME1 you can stack your biotics, so lift a dude up, warp him then use carnage to blow him up. In ME2 use one power and you have to wait to use more... My inner loot whore is also frowning. Managing all the crap in ME1 could be annoying (PC version helped a lot) but it was always exciting looking in locked lockers and stuff and then finding that new x that kicked ass. Now it feels even more tedious to open a safe or whatever, since I know all I will find is credits to buy simple, non-interactive upgrades. No weapon upgrades sucks too. I liked being able to add poison shots combined with faster cooldown on my shotgun.
*sigh* At least the story is still good.

The pistol is quite powerful and accurate, but I couple it with ammo that knocks down shields and so on. The min-sub is also quite good for quickly ripping through shields and killing.
In this version, it relies on two party members to get the combo attacks off. So you'll just need to pick a character that does warp and then someone that does lift.
What I like about the changes in ME2 is that on insanity, I can not do the game alone, so I really need to make sure I pick the right team. In ME I never really cared to use anyone other than Ashley and Liara and could complete any mission solo -- normally I just pushed them to the side while I cleared the way.
As for the RPG and action part, I'm with you, I want it to be more like the first, I want loot. But since I still get RPG elements in the ship itself and other upgrades, I'm currently enjoying myself with this game. I actually like scanning planets and have already upgraded my scanner.
Anyways, I'm really enjoying ME2 now, I'm about 11 hours in to the game. To me ME2 is like Castlevania: Portrait of Rune when in comparison to the first. It mixed things up just enough that at first I was taken back, but after a certain point, I appreciated the changes and ended up liking the game almost as much as the first one.

The elevators didn't bother me, but I'm probably the exception. :)
My late comment- While I did not hate the elevators I thought it was a waste of time standing in them for 15 seconds. They could have given us high speed elevators instead. :)
360 or PC or 360 or PC. I'd have more opportunity to play it on my Mac/Bootcamp, but I also like playing on my 60" TV. Drats.

Just plug your Mac into your TV. :p
What I liked about the elevators, is that they kept continuity in the game. This version seems to be lacking it, especially with its mission complete screens and load screens every time I use an elevator.
I can't recall the command, but there was a way to speed up the game on the PC version. :)

If I had to choose, I'd pick no screen loads and put up with the elevator. Screen loads really kills immersion for me.

It does take away from immersion, because it reminds me I'm in a game that drank too much Action Koolaid. But none the less, I'm still really happy with it. The character interaction is still very good, there's probably less of it though. I'm also bothered that now I don't have to invest in any kind of persuasion skill, it's now a given that I can be ruthless or good.

I broke down yesterday, picked up ME2 from Best Buy and played it for a few hours, however half of that time was futzing with my characters appearance. :) I tried to import my original ME1 character, but it told me there was no valid data! (I completed the original game.) I'm wondering if my nephew who comes over and games on my 360 messed up my saves? Anyone know if you can work on more than one Mass Effect game at a time, or if you select new game, it wipes out your old saves?
No matter, I'm moving ahead. The in-game "restore" (I won't say anything more) was cool. I just managed to get recruited by the Illusive Man (Cerberus (http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Cerberus)) and am now heading out to check on the missing colony. :)
I'm not into it far enough but my initial impression is that this is just a continuation of the old story with the original character models. Nothing really flashy and new hit me. That was a little disappointing.

I played the original through twice, and on firing up ME2 I had the option of pulling across either of my two saves, which was a nice touch.
Loving it so far and I think the new method of selecting abilities/ammo an ordering squadmates is grand. I've also liked meeting up with the old squad - only two more to catch up with.

Every time you beat the game it creates a hidden end game save automatically. You can save right before the final boss fight and beat the game multiple times doing different choices like saving the council or not, it will count those as new saves that you can choose in ME2.

Well my copies arrived today... Took long enough!
First impressions
PC
Graphics. Very good all told but with some strange omissions.
What no AA options in configure ? Had to use catalyst control centre to put on AA.
Also whilst the first game looked better on PC, I'm not sure other than general higher resolution improvement - if it's 'that different' to the 360 (texture, particle effect, post processing etc..) Which is great for the 360, and it indeed still looks great on PC, but I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination say it was the 'ultimate' superior version.
Controls. Again no 360 controller support....
Anyway I'm running it using an Xpadder profile and it works very well indeed. In fact I really do not see why control pad support was not added this time round. Don't get me started on K&M / C-Pad debate. The fact is when games are 11-15GB in size, and developed with console version at the same time, there should be no reason why the PC version could not have the option to tailor controls to suit. They are not having to re-invent the wheel here, it's just annoying for a lot of gamers. The ability to switch GUI dependent on controller would not be too difficult to implement either.
I am playing a new game on PC. Female character. Interesting change as nearly all the things I did in the first on the 360 are different here so at least I get to play the game from both angles.
360 version.
Graphically it's so much improved and it's really nice to see that texture load in and frame-rate problems are completely stabilized this time round.
With the 360 version being so close to PC version this time around, it makes you wonder why Dragon Age : Origins on the 360 looks so ****ty in comparison to pc, when both PC & 360 version of Mass Effect 2 look significantly better than DA:O
Controls. Perfect with some nice subtle improvements.
I didn't mind the inventory managment of the first game, but I wont miss it I guess.
Here's the reason for both versions.... My 360 save carries on. So it's interesting to see how my original 'backstory' will effect things, certainly it appears to effect the start of the game and hopefully it will have an ongoing effect, but that remains to be seen.
Enjoying both....
Oh and buying both versions from India, cost me the same as buying one here. Not too shabby. :D

Tbh, I probably should have only got the 360 version, especially considering the improvement in graphics this time around.
However I did the same with Dragon Age Origins. I bought PS3 & PC versions.
So I can play it with 'better' graphics and on my laptop when I'm away. (Trust me a week in hospital a week or so ago, made me appreciate being able to game via bootcamp too).

"Finished" ME2 last night, obviously lining things up for ME3 in a big way - which I'm hoping comes out within a year. Bit of an odd end TBH, not sure if I'd go as far as saying its an anticlimax - but I envy anyone in a years time playing it for the first time who can then go straight into ME3.
I've got some exploring, upgrades and some minor side missions to do but other than that I'm wondering what's the point... there's no "real" missions left (as far as I know) so scanning planets just to upgrade weapons/amps/armor seems a little pointless...
And as Bioshock 2 will be in my hands today I may not revisit ME2 unless I want to play it through again... and if I want to do that I may start all again in ME1 and chose a different class this time.

Yeah, I finished it yesterday and agree. It's a great game and I loved it, particularly the character side missions. The actual quest itself related to the main goal was relatively brief but the loyalty missions were a lot of fun to play. The ending wasn't an ending as much as a straight lead in to ME3. I hope most of the characters return because I've gotten quite fond of them. Can't wait for the finale!

Is quite fun to do loyalty missions again and do it opposite way of whatever path you chose last time (Paragon or Renegade), or even purposely fail them.
Failing them often made me feel like a rotten bastard though :(

In the original, I really liked being able to walk through the Citadel. Although it's just a first impression, in ME2, I don't think you can do that. Instead you must fast travel everywhere? If so, that is one strike against immersion, although so far I really don't have much to do at the Citadel except check in with the Admiral and the Council. Maybe later?

You only talk to the council once the whole game :p So make it count, just tell em where to stick it and their "good gesture" spectre badge.
If you listen, you will hear "The actions you take in Mass Effect 2 will greatly impact your missions in Mass Effect 3" in certain parts of the game. Talk about shameless plugging :p

Eventually I think we'll be able to talk to the council (as evidenced by other posts), but I don't think the Citadel is going to open up any more than it has from a walk around and explore standpoint. I think they have also eliminated driving around on planets. :(

They have, it was one of the biggest complaints from the last game. BioWare said no driving except for some DLC that will come after launch. I say good riddance, I found the Mako to be quite annoying. On one of the planets I think I had texture issues, some of the land would appear black, I had to guess my way around the lava,

Thats a good thing..s*it was boring as hell. I missed 70% of the side missions because I didn't want to drive that god awful mule thing and the controls sucked big time.
I'm taking my time with this game, I'm now doing Thane and the suit lady side quest. I was hoping I could of taken Samara(thats her name right?) and her daughter with me but the game didn't give me a choice and killed the daughter. I have one more squad slot open but I have no idea whos it for...I also did Jack's loyalty mission but I guess since I took the side of Miranda in the argument she won't fully be loyal.
Jack is funny, always telling me to go and kiss Miranda's arse...LOL

I'll defend myself and say that driving around on planets helps immersion if there is something to see, discover, and things to find, just like walking around the Citadel. The original was sparse on the discovery side, I admit, but as a rule, I think the more open the world is, the more immersive it is, so it seems like you are exploring a world vs just playing a game set up a stage. When the developer as Bioware has done, decides to just drive the story, there is no exploration. As with Dragon Age Origins and this game, I can handle it, but it's not as immersive for me. There are tradeoffs in each kind of game say Oblivion or WoW vs ME2. :)

The driving controls for the PC were greatly improved over the 360, so I had no problems with them. If the developers had the hindsight they had for the PC version when making the 360 version originally, I think there would have been less complaints.
I haven't played this game for over a week now and I won't be able to get back on it until late this coming week, so I'm just going to start over and load one of my saved games so that things are how I remembered.
Anyways, DAM ALL OF THIS STREAMLINING! :(

If you listen, you will hear "The actions you take in Mass Effect 2 will greatly impact your missions in Mass Effect 3" in certain parts of the game. Talk about shameless plugging :p
And given how well they did with that THIS time ... pretty meaningless crap.

Beside your character what else was carried forward, characters from the original that survived? Is that somehow better than starting from scratch where I assume you'd see all of the original characters?

Thing is they did very little in terms of carry-forward. If you don't have a save game they said you could make loads of choices. I think you get three minor ones, and you get to choose a statement but not an outcome about a major one. Even if you DO have a save there are only a few things that matter that have come along.
Oh, and then after the opening they take the absolute laziest approach of 'continuing a known trilogy' by simply rebooting and railroading you into a course of action that dominates everything up through the very end of the game.

^I do agree with the opening. I'm about half a dozen hours in, and I do not feel connected to the story line at all. The guns bore me so far as well as well. The sense of discovery is no longer in the game, and don't get me started about scanning the planets for resources. BOOOORING. That and MUCH MUCH MUCH to slow. Shoot, at least make it like I have to drill for them, maybe somewhat of the same mini game play in Splinter Cell: Double Agent when assembling mines. At least that was a touch fun. This? Hold button and ever so slowly wait to feel the controller vibrate. What year is it in the game? I'd imagine their scanning systems are more advanced. GEEEZ. Oh well, the story line does keep me engaged enough.

Mining on the PC isn't that bad at all. It involves both visual and 3D audible feedback and with the scanner upgraded it moves quick enough, especially if I toggle up my mouse's speed, which moves it too fast when trying to hone in on an area.
I like the mining part, but if it were overly slow as you mentioned, I'd grow tired of it. It's one of the few RPG elements they've left in on this overly streamlined game. Now after saying that, I enjoyed mining and scanning WAY more in games like Star Control 2 (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/star-control-ii) and Star Flight (http://www.mobygames.com/game/starflight), which I played about 2 decades back.
Anyways, I hope that ME3 isn't as toned down as this game. They can't please everyone, but this is a RPG shooter, so I hope that more RPG gets put back into it and they get rid of those lame mission complete screens.

I am not an RPG nut by any means, but I do agree. Put back in more RPG elements. And those mission complete screens...oh gosh, thanks for mentioning those.

Yep the game is good enough, but it's story driven with no exploration. It's missing one of the main reasons I've enjoyed RPGs.
Mining is extremely boring. Just save us some time and programming effort and click on a planet and in one fell swoop get everything it has to offer- Why? Because that kind of exploration would most likely be automated by droids. It's just Bioware's version of grinding... :)

I played Mass Effect on PC before getting rid off my old computer.
It sucked... MASSIVE.
The AMD loading glitch. Time synchronization issues. Lag, textures issues even on PC. Average combat even for an ActionRPG. The story line was the only good thing. (Hell it was typical Bioware Epicness :D ).
I'd recommend Folklore, even Demons Souls over MassEffect. Just for the sake that the bugs don't kill the game.

I would actually call it character-story driven, since the main story is inane and throws out much of the stuff from the first game, and anything of real quality comes from the character-based quests ...
Mining ... yeah, really lousy ... and since I'm playing bootcamp I would have liked to use my Mighty Mouse but the 'dual click' requirement of mining means having to hook up a wired mouse for ME2.

Agreed, main story bores me so far. But as someone above said, #2 is so much more character driven than main story driven. I am glad this one is a rental for me.
