So what does everyone think about this one? Will it be awesome...or awful? First review gave it an "awesome" - but it's from "Official Playstation Magazine", so I expected no less.

I am definitely intrigued by the game. I can't wait to see some more reviews, I'm really hoping it will be a cool experience.

Isn't there a demo coming out soon?

I really enjoyed Indigo Prophecy | Fahrenheit and therefore I'm looking forward to it.

Will it be a masterpiece ? Well expectations like that can only lead to disappointment.

The most interesting preview of hands on that I have read raises interesting questions. Namely that whilst the games director wishes to blur the line between 'Movie & Game' experience, the biggest problem with it is 'Focus'. There is a lack of genuine movie genre focus and therefore it seemingly flits from a Sam Mendes 'American Beauty', to a De Palma all out action flick with the sections 'jarring' and pacing literally all over the place. If it wanted to really blur the movie \ game line it should have chosen a directorial movie genre and stuck to it - and in doing so become a master of that; rather than trying to blend 8 different movies into a game experience and be a master of none.

I have it pre-ordered already and look forward to making my own mind up about it.

My most anticipated game of the year...I can't wait to get my hands on this. I've noticed a lot of bloggers go out of their way to call this game a QTE fest and once again the sheep that is the internet follow close behind. Why is it a game thats not about blood/gore/FPS is not worth the time of gamers:rolleyes:

I know quantic dream devs are real good at telling a story and I'm hoping they stay away from the crazy end of Indigo Prophecy.

I'm looking forward to it, but I am definitely waiting on the reviews. I don't mind QTE events. I was a big fan of both Shenmues on Dreamcast. I read the last blog by someone from the studio, and he seemed overly depressed about the development of the game and story. I DO NOT buy into any hype about games coming out. TOTAL BS. It seems that the majority of hyped games are mediocre or terrible. I really only preorder games that have a low chance of going wrong. This is one I will not preorder.

The only game I pre-ordered is Bioshock 2. I would go for Gran Turismo as well, but is seems it will be delayed again, so why bother?

As far as Heavy Rain is concerned, I have seen some videos in GameTrailers, and it really seems like an overhyped game. The faces and voices are totally unacceptable for a 2010 game.

I won't be buying this before I play it in some demo, even if it does get good reviews.

How can GT be delayed again when it never had a release date in all but 1 region? The only region that can say it was delayed is Japan, they are the only region to ever have an official release date.

On topic, this game is great, worth the price of admission imo. While it can be a bit QTE heavy the story and how it immerses you more than compensates and then some.

I wish I still had the kind of free time to blow on video games to consider an 8-hour game "short". It took me about a year to finish Bioshock! :D

That said, this is definitely a multiple-play-through game.

Brilliant, the demo made me want to import the Euro special edition version just for the extra goodies...just from the demo I can tell the story will be engrossing.

Controls were a little awkward at the start but it took me seconds to adjust.

No average game length of an action/adventure title is 8-12 hours.

A number of games can be breezed through a lot quicker. Resident Evil 5 can be finished in little over 6 hours.

RPG's tend to be the daddies of game length, some clocking in 60+ hours. However if you were to take out the backtracking, rambling text/conversations & random level grinding battles that length would probably end up around the same 12 hour mark.

I think you breeze through games then. RE5 took me MUCH longer, and generally don't have a hard time playing games. Then again I do try to complete games, not just beat the story, and I also play on the hardest difficulty. If one wants to be babied, I can see "beating" (story only) most games on easy or medium in a shorter time period.

^ Nah I'm a hardcore gamer who play's on easy settings :D:D:D

Seriously too many games for me to play (i'm more of a compulsive buyer than anything if I'm truly honest) that even though a game can be finished in say 10 hours it will probably still take me the best part of 6-24 months to complete unless I grow utterly tired of it and never finish it (which happens to be the vast majority of games these days)....

Games that truly grip me, I will spend considerably more time on. I'm already 20 hours + on both my Dragon Age : Origin save's.

On topic, the demo was fantastic. Everything I wanted in the game. The fight is intense since some actions need to be entered so quickly. Voice acting on two of the characters (slut and the FBI agent) were a bit off, and some mega tearing at one point (:() but still... I want it.

if you like interactive movies you will like it .. if you don't .. well then heavy rain is nothing for you

i tried the demo and didn't really like it much .. feels a like a rental at best... what i totally didn't like is that in many situations it shows you a button for an action on screen and you don't know what will result from that action... which doesn't make you feel exactly in control

why not make a movie in the first place ?

Because it plays out differently. For instance, the first time I did the apartment scene, I got thrown out because I pushed her too hard and she got pissed off. Next time, I took a different approach and she spilled the beans about her kid and the murder.

I like the execution of the demo, however I am not sure I will enjoy the full game so much. In games with QTE events or the likes of this game, I find myself scanning the screen waiting to pounce on the button combo instead of watching the story unfold. I will give the game a chance though.

2nyRiggz
Feb 14, 2010, 07:19 AM
^Understood but the thing with this game is the button interaction is not the usual QTE..if you miss a button press then a whole new series open up to you that will lead to another outcome or the same...it doesn't force fast button presses on you except for the action scene which like I said if you miss the button then it leads you to another.

Well these types of games arent for everyone but I'm glad to see the game sites giving it great scores.

This game is right in line with my favorite genre, survival horror which includes Silent Hill and Siren.

For the same reason I am 8 hours in to Star Ocean, 17 hours in to White Knight Chronicals (really good JRPG, ignore the reviews), and all the other RPG'esq games coming. I counted MRU, I have 60 disc based games and 24 downloadable.. I think I have beat maybe 5 or 6 of them, good thing I don't pay for the majority of them :p

Bob am sad.

I really, REALLY want to play this game, but i played the demo tonight and i simply cant stomach time based 'simon says' gameplay. It's sad because I know it will be a brilliant engaging story, but It's ruined for me while my eyes flick from controller to screen, trying to remember where the triangle button is, or trying to read a conversation prompt that's zipping around the screen, obscured by both other text and scenery.

I want an autoplay mode so i can just watch it.

I am actually very glad they released a demo for this game. I got a little fed up (but not that much so) but the awkwardness of the controls, but the pacing actually wasn't too bad. It seems like most first/third person games use the same basic movements, but I found it too difficult to control the characters.

I think this is a landmark game for a number of reasons, but it's just a bit too different to have a lot of mainstream success... and probably for that reason I'd be interested in playing it after buying it used later this year while games I'd be much more interested in playing are finishing development or being beta-tested by fanboys right after their release!

It feels weird at first, but later it all just feels so natural. It really connects you with the character too. Compared to the full game, the demo is absolute crap.

If you are looking for something with a ton of action dont even bother with Heavy Rain. Its not an action game by any means. There are a few action scenes, and they can be very intense (mainly because if you fail you die and the game keeps going, you dont get to try again), but the focus is on the story and the story is amazing.

If anyone is having issues with the game freezing, the character getting stuck, audio lapses, or video stutter please report it in the following thread

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=heavyrain&thread.id=3968&view=by_date_ascending&page=6

I purposely used page 6 as a developer responded on the 2nd post on the page.

Try not to give out spoliers when if you make a report.

I had the character get stuck once (had to quit and restart the game), and some audio issues in the beginning.

One tip is to delete the patch they just released and let it re-load, that seems to help some people.

I finished it today. Yes, its rather short, but good god is it intense! I'm going to start playing through again in order to see what i missed.

Now that i finished the story (with only one death, right at the very end ) i let myself look at a few spoiler threads on the internet. I havent found one person who got the same ending i did. There seems to be about 4-5 different ways the last scene can play out and about 3-4 different epilogue scenes for each character.

Long story short, this game is fantastic. If you care at all about a great story then you must pick this up. Its not going to keep your fingers as busy as COD or something, but it draws you in like you never thought a game could. There were moments where i sat on my chair completely at a loss of what to do next because i could actually feel the emotional struggle in the character's mind.

I just completed the game, it was amazing. I was fooled by the mind tricks in some of the scenes. I guess I was one of the lucky few, I got a good ending in my first play though but I did screw up some of the scenario. Some of the scenes remind me of the movie Saw.

I have to add on that this game suffers quite a few technical glitches though.

I finally started playing last night. Very glitchy, indeed. Audio hiccups right from the start; in the shopping mal scene the video froze but the audio kept going, then the video came back and ran without sound (since the audio had already played). How the game was declared "gold" in this state is beyond me.

But I am really enjoying it. The walking controls are the only negative thing I can come up with. But it's no big deal so far, the control scheme in general is very fitting and really connects you with the characters. The story seems very interesting and well told. Only a few hours in, but my g/f and I are very intrigued. Can't wait to see how this unfolds...

I didn't play it, but i watched a friend play it because it was quite entertaining to just "watch." It was really just like watching a movie. They could easily make hundreds of this types of games that could entertain a few people as if watching a movie.

Maybe this is the next form of entertainment; interactive movies. Opens up a lot of possibilities.

Also, it really looked amazing. Graphics were sweet. We did have a few skips here and there as mentioned by previous posters.

Finally finished it today! What a ride, I really enjoyed it.

On my first ending, ALL FOUR playable characters died...but Shaun lived. It was pretty harsh. Then I played around some more and got a few better ones, including the "Four Heros" trophy.

For some reason, it wouldn't give me the Birthday trophy, even though I did everything that was asked. Weird, but oh well.

Overall, a great game, very well done! I'd like to see more like it!

played it together with friends while having somedrinks during eastern with swapping controller back and forth ... and for that purpose it was fun (also thanks to our great QTE skills we did pletny of trophies) but i hate to say it's a rental at best.. sure gettign all the trophies migth take some time but after finishing it i don't have a motivation for playing through the whole thing again ...

it's better than i expected it to be as an interactive movie and it's hilarious if you sit in front of the Tv arguing about what to do in certain situations but i can't see it developing into more than a niche .. especially at that price

It seems like my definition of a "short" game is changing drastically the older I get. I just don't have that much time to game anymore... Bioshock lasted me a good year. Heavy Rain lasted me over a month (one play-through), and I played that what I consider "a lot". As a rental, I would have to play it an entire weekend, from the minute I wake up until I go back to sleep. Reality is, if I get like 3-4 hours in on a weekend, it's exceptional.

I finished it a couple of days ago, I thought it was amazing. One of the best PS3 games there is. Unfortunately I got a kind of bad ending :(

Loved it, played until I got every ending. My GOTY so far.

well we got through it in 2 sittings on friday and saturday evening .. both around roughly 4 hours perhaps
and my rental comment was more focused on the current price of heavy rain .. paying 69 euros like some shops want around here is simply out of question for a interactive movie for me

sometimes games can last me months as well.. like uncharted 1 which i have to admit is simply too cliche and predictable story wise and with annoying combat .. i had to force me to actually finish it ... i borrowed it from a friend ;)

But as I have said in other contexts, that is great *for you* ... but game length is an objective quantity ... so just because one round of Tiger Woods PGA Golf now takes you a month shouldn't stop those of us who continue to want RPG's to be 40+ hours like back in the 80's ...

Not really. What's a short game for some people can be long for others. The time to finish is quantifiable and therefore subjective. Whether it's "long" or "short" depends on your personal standards.

Who ever said it should?

Not really seeing the point of your post here....

Sorry - but if the average FPS in 2000 was 12 hours, and in 2010 is 4 hours ... the games are shorter. Period.

Nope. MW2 is going to take less time to finish than Far Cry unless you are just being stupid and wasting time.

Reading comprehension, guys....

The time it takes to finish a game is not subjective. 8 hours is 8 hours, no matter who plays it.

Whether 8 hours is short or long is up to your judgment. Many people say Bioshock or Heavy Rain were "short". They weren't to me.

Not all, just the bad ones.
Besides an "8 hour game" isn't a fixed length. Some people might speed through it whilst others (like me) inspect everything and take their sweet time. That's why HL2 took me 12 hours, and even the episodes took me 6 hours or so.

But then if an 8 hour game is 'long', what is a 35 hour RPG ... or the 80 hours I took for Dragon Age ... or my recent 120 hour replay of Baldur's Gate 2?

well game lenght is more dependend on game type and genre
shooter with 30 hours: very long
RPG with 10 hours: laughable short

i found the pacing of heavy rain just right in matters of lenght for what it is.. it never felt that i was grinding away or not being entertained or that it was cut too short (despite plot holes left open)

These would be games that would probably last me five years each! ;)

Seriously though, this debate is rather silly. I was just commenting on how I have less time to play as I get older, and therefore games last me much longer and do not seem "short" to me. Just my personal observation/experience; nothing to argue about, really. Ten years ago, when I had a lot more time to dick around with video games, I probably would have considered Heavy Rain and Bioshock "short" as well.
