A friend has a 512mb ram module that he has taken out his powermac g5 and replaced with something higher I'm confused about this pairs thing
Can I put only 1 module in or would I be better off getting 2 256mb modules elsewhere.
Will it make a huge impact on the speed

Thanks Nick

Inside the G5 powermac are 2 banks of slots for RAM.

Install matched pairs of RAM going outwards from the centre, 1 of the same kind in each slot.

So in our work machines we have in each bank going outwards from the centre.

Slot 1: 256
Slot 2: 512
Slot 3: 512
Slot 4: ---

(2 x banks = 2.5gb)

You'd be better off installing two 256MB sticks than one 512MB stick. One will work but not as well as two. Barefeats did a comparison and it was clear that two sticks of memory are utilized much more efficiently than one stick of the same memory.

Powermac G5 require pairs - you can't put in one single stick.
Or are you referring to the G5 iMac?
