I have an iPod touch 3rd gen running iOS 4.1b2 (I have access to betas) and yesterday, my iPod touch randomly went into recovery mode (with the connect to iTunes screen).

I'm serious, it randomly went into recovery mode. I was using it normally (setting up the new google push notifications) and I then left it on a table. I was gone for a few hours, then I came back and it was in recovery mode :(:(.

The next part of this story is even crazier. My brother also has an iPod touch, though a second gen, running iOS 4 with a JB. He turned on his iPod 30minutes after I noticed mine was in recovery mode, and HIS was also in recovery mode :(:(:(!!!

I still got push notifications though in Recovery mode, but can't do anything with them.

So onto my question, how do I get an iPod touch running iOS 4 out of recovery mode without a restore?

I tried RecBoot, but it didn't work.

I currently have access to a Windows PC, but I will soon have access to a Mac, so platform is not an issue.

THANKS in advance!

EDIT: My iPod, because it was tied to a dev account, got into recovery mode because the provisioning profile expired.

I restored to 4.1b3 (I had b2) and restored from backup and it's syncing now with our iMac!

The one issue I have is that it reset my folders, so all of my games and apps have to be moved back into folders (imagine 12 pages of apps, but instead of that I had pg1:defaults and games I play a lot pg2: other games pg3: other apps, yes I have a lot of apps, it took my a long time to get the folders how I like them (games for genre, brand, or series and apps by use (photo, video, radio, communicate, social, etc))

Try holding down the power button and home button down at the same time for about 10 seconds.

Is there any software to do it without restore (RecBoot didn't work)?

If RecBoot didn't work, that means there is a system error and you have to restore.

I searched Google and found iRecovery, I'll try that and get back to you

There is a program called TinyUmbrella
http://wccftech.com/2010/08/15/downgrade-ios-402-ios-401-ios-40-jailbreaking-guide-iphone-4-3gs-3g-ipod-touch/

There is a button called "Kick out of recovery"
then you will get the apply logo on your ipod and just wait 30 seconds for it to complete its reboot process.

Was anyone in the house when you left them alone? If the answer is yes, you've (and your bro) probably been pranked, although thats a pretty rough prank if it was one.

The button is grayed out, remember I'm on beta

It was a hotel, and the DND sign was up, so it wasn't a prank

OMG!!! I just figured out why my iPod is in recovery mode!

I had the 4.1 beta and my iPod was provisioned for development, the provisioning expired Aug 22, that put the iPod into recovery mode!

My brother's, while not running 4.1 beta, was also provisioned, and that's why his was in recovery mode.

I guess iNeed to install the latest xCode beta and iOS 4.1b3, even though 4.1 will probably come out Wednesday, I can't wait that long (though I might getca new iPod... I really want that camera)

I'll tell you all how it goes
