$100, eh? I think I might have a project when I go home for X-mas involving me, my parent's cube, and . . . I dunno a mallet and myself getting electrocuted and swearing a lot?

This could be a fun project though, we just replaced the power brick on the cube last summer.

Talk about getting sucked in with the $100 banner on the window and not reading the fine print. :p

Should I be reading this as a portend of the next PB revision?

Relatedly, I also found the comments on the performance of the 7447 compared to the 7457s interesting.

meh. Just some thoughts.

Would be nice to see benchmarks of this in the last of the line G4 towers - against the iMac G5 1.6, perhaps.

If it's an overclocked 1.5, I wonder how they got it stable? If it's a 'new' chip rated at 1.7, will we be seeing this in the 17" PB, or an eMac anytime soon?

I'm curious to see a dual proc version of this for the MDD series.

I also wonder what the performance improvement would be. It has to be enough to make it worth springing for the upgrade, but not so overpriced that I might as well go get a PowerMac G5.

This is very cool only from what i saw it only has 512k of L3, give it a 1mb or more and you may have something. Its still nice to see the G4 moving again even if they are overclocking it and giving it a fancy dancy new heat sink. 1.7 G4 should offer nice performance for cube and quicksilver owners.

The larger L2 cache (512K) typically has the same performance as a processor that has 256K of L2 cache with 2M of L3 cache. What I'm hoping is that someone will use ther version of the processor that has the larger L2 cache and supports L3 cache with as much L3 cache as it supports.

The G4 processors that Apple is currently using are the varient that don't support the L3 cache. A bit less circuitry on the chip and a bit lower power consumption.

While i can see the appeal of upgrading your Cube, why bother with a G4 tower?

Better to sell it and put the money from the sale and the money from an upgrade towards a G5.

Oh well, each to his own i suppose.

For the cube's what? Apostrophe's make thing's possessive. Why does everyone use them to make things plural?

Oh well, each to his own i suppose.I am actually leaning towards a G5 sometime next year, however, it's quite likely that I'm going to keep the G4 as well.

For it to be worth upgrading my G4, the new procs would have to be at least 15-25% faster for the applications I run, and cost less than aboout $700. (Remember dual procs.) And somehow I doubt that that is going to happen anytime soon.

When I actually buy a G5 will depend on what Apple announces with the next revision. And no, I'm not speculating what it will be or when it will be.

shut up i was in a rush at the time, i posted this from school and i was very late.

the admin of cubeowner seems to be hinting that powerlogix will come out with 1.4GHz duals for the cube at $600 before the end of the year, i'll be getting one but the benchmarks will choose which one for me.

(the powerlogix will have 4MB l3 cache  )

news flash: http://www.gigadesigns.com/news.html

giga has matched and surpassed sonnet with a dual 1.7GHz card, not for cubes but there is a single 1.7Ghz card that can work fannless at 1.6GHz, i would like to compare giga's firmware patch to sonnet's as they are currently having there asses sued by powerlogix over stealing there code, i would wait untill the case is over and powerlogix launches there cards before buying anything.

looks like a good day to be a cubeowner :D

The Cube upgrade supports fan less operation at 1.6GHz, and 1.7GHz+ operation with the addition of a low speed fan.

Fanless at 1.6ghz? That's huge. I want myself a 1.6 fanless cube.

So you slowed yourself down even more by putting extra apostrophe's in there?

Um.
the title is misleading. TWO vendors have released 1.7Ghz Cube upgrades:

1) Sonnet and 2) Giga Designs

The fanless bit is up to you, which becomes apparent as you read CO forums, esp. if you combine these updates with higher end video cards which were never meant to fit in a Cube.

The basefan brackets built in by Apple are there for a reason.

the video card is not effected at all by the base fan all it dose is cool the HD and the heatsink,

you CAN run the 1.6 fanless with a modded 9800 fine. (power is not an issue as you need a external power supply for the 9800).

i'd like to see comparisons between a fully upgraded cube (1.7GHz giga overclocked to as high as possible (2.0GHz max?) with a 9800 compared to a imac g5 and a g5 tower.
