I can only think of two right now, both are classics.

"White Christmas" with Bing Crosby

"Its A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart

Although the second one is my favorite. :D

It's sort of a guilty pleasure, but I really liked Santa Clause :D

(NOT the sequels, only the original)

"It's a Wonderful Life" is a pretty good movie. I'm sure everyone else has seen it, but I just saw it last year for the first time. :) See it if you haven't already.

I can say that my most UNfavorite Christmas movie (which I know, so many people love anyway) is the "You'll shoot your eye out!" movie with that little blond kid. That movie makes me cringe!

dotnina, you took the words out of my mouth. well, almost. A CHRISTMAS STORY!

actually i hate the movie now, but when i was younger, i was obsessed. Then for about 8 years in a row, I watched the 24-hours-of-a-christmas-story marathon on TNT. That's about 96 times seeing the movie... give or take...

On second thought, i'm going to go hang myself.

No way, "A Christmas Story" is the best holiday movie ever! It's not the holiday season until you've stumbled across it on basic cable, at least in my mind.

Then again, the trick is to not watch the whole thing - just ten minutes whenever you catch it.

Paul, you reminded me of Christmas songs, with the comment about The Christmas Story. Back in '92 my uncle passed away just before Christmas. The funereal was on the 23rd, so I was relegated to driving back on Christmas Day (after trying up some estate details on the 24th) on Christmas Day. No matter what radio station I tuned to, I'll Be Home For Christmas was playing. Given the patriarchal influence that my uncle had on my upbringing, and that it was the last "trip home" (meaning that the family house was going to be sold for estate purposes) - that damn song was the last one I needed to hear (also given that my Dad passed away just 5 months before).

{Historical note: I'll Be Home For Christmas became a hit during WWII (1943). For many it was was seminal statement of hope. And in many ways, important today, as it was back then.}

To this day, I can not think, or hear that song without emotions welling up. Maybe this is a topic for a separate thread.

In small doses, it is OK. Not worthy of being in the top 5 IMO.

Maybe Mr. Smith Goes to Washington would be a better choice?

X-mas isn't the same without a James Bond movie or two on Boxing day. Movies with an x-mas theme, though, ugh. Not really my bucket of fish.

You're kidding... right?

'Boxing Day' is December 26th. Wait, Xmas is the 25th, right?

Anyway, it's the day after; Sweet Mother Theresa only knows why it's called that. (Don't Google me answers, I'd prefer the mystery  )

I was being too lazy to Google the answer. Also I like the personal responses to questions here.

I can't really relate to anything that horrible, as I'm only 17 and haven't really been alive long enough to see time take its toll on any friends or family, but I can only imagine how desolating it is. :(

My favorite christmas movie though... "You'll shoot your eye out!" :D

Didn't mean to be such a bummer. It was just after what i went through back then, that song had new meaning.

Thanks for the kind words.

I like that movie as well, since it is closer to my life than anything else. Not a #1 for me, but worthy of note.

I wish that we had 'Boxing Day' here in the US, no one works that day anyway. Just those with critical jobs like doctors, nurses, fireman, and police. :D

A CHRISTMAS STORY!

I was obsessed too. And I'm still impressed by the fact that the main character decides to "suit it" to go see Santa at the mall. It was directed by Bob Clark who also did the Porky's movies (subject for a future thread) and the guy who played "Flick" is or was a porn star.

No question, my favorite is Christmas Vacation. My favorite line is when Aunt Bethany says, "Do you hear it, it's a funny squeaky sound," and Uncle Lewis replies with "You couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerine plant." That one line make me laugh every time I hear it. Great movie.

how can anyone dislike 'A christmas story'? That is without a doubt my favorite. Around here (in Massachusetts), WTBS plays that movie for 24 hours starting christmas eve at midnight to christmas day at midnight. I see it in bits and pieces about six times during that time. I don't know why (maybe because I loved it so much when I was a kid) but WTBS plays pretty much straight in the background for that 24 hours.

I actually despise christmas but that movie and driving around after a nice snowfall looking at the houses lit up actually brings a smile to my cold and callous heart. ;)

I like the original 'Miracle on 34th St' to get me in the mood for Christmas.

Boxing Day, from memory, was so-called because it was the day that the masters gave their servants Christmas boxes, often full of useful things like new uniforms rather than nice things. They didin't get them on Christmas Day since the servants were busy cooking the master's turkey!

Another reason is that it was the day that churches opened up their alms boxes to find out how generous people had been during Advent and gave the money to the poor of the parish.

Gotta add the following (although I love most of the previously mentioned movies):

1. Bells of St. Mary's
2. The Rankin Bass Holiday Specials (Rudolph, Little Drummer Boy, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Year Without a Santa)
3. The Grinch (original animated Boris Karloff extravaganza)
4. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (starts off the the holiday season at Thanksgiving)
5. Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart
6. Scrooged with Bill Murray has its moments....

That's about all for now....

Well, my favorites have already been covered, but...

I have watched "A Wonderful Life" every christmas for the past 18+ years. And it has always been in the original Black-and-White (no heretical Tecnicolor).

"Miracle on 34th Street" is also good.

Other essentials:

"how the Grinch stole Christmas" (original...don't even get me started)
" Frosty the Snowman" (yay heatbuster)

As for Comedy, "scrooged", "christmas story" and "christmas vacation" top the list, but they are hardly essential.

"elf" may be a future classic, I thought it was pretty funny.

In no particular order:

Christmas Vacation
A Christmas Story
Nightmare Before Christmas
It's A Wonderful Life
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

And then there are always the Christmas features of cartoons like:

Charlie Brown Christmas
Garfield Christmas
and Family Guy :)

You just reminded me, I've got a temporary retail job which means I have to work that day. No James Bond for me :(And then there are always the Christmas features of cartoons like:

Haha... the Invader Zim Xmas special is especially awesome. I also love the Futurama take of Santa as an evil, murderous robot.
