Hi All:

Now that the 2010 Mac pros are out, and now that apple has started getting 5770's and 58770's out, I had a few questions about additional display card options I was hoping others might know about:

1) Has anyone tried to get the 5870 2gb eyfinity 6 card working in the Mac pro?

2) I imagine a flash will be required?

3) Also, do all 6 ports work to drive 30"/dual link displays?

I got the new 2.66ghz 12 core with 2 5770's. There is still one slot left, which I eventually want to fill with a FireWire 3200/USB 3.0 card. In addition to my 6 30" displays (currently driven by the 2 5770's, I'd like to drive two more displays (a 65" 1920x1080 display an a 1280x800 projector).

4) My guess is there should be a single slot/width 5770 out in the market that could be flashed, which could drive the additional two displays? Does anyone know of one.

That way I could drive all 8 displays and have usb3/fw3200. (weird that this Mac didn't get the USB 3 update).

*) hmm, if the eyefinity 6 works in the Mac pro, it might be possible to drop 2 in the Mac pro, plus a single/width 5770 and drive around 14-15 30" displays. Sick.

Thanks for any insights.

I don't think the Eyefinity cards are currently working. I'm also pretty sure the 5770 does not currently ship in a single slot variety.

USB3 didn't get added because the Intel chipsets don't currently support it, only 3rd party chipsets.

It sounds like you might want to be using GT 120's instead. Dual display, single slot.

The problem with the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity is that it has a different PCB and a different memory layout. 16 memory chips instead of 8 for a total of 2GB of onboard frame buffer.

don't forget that 2gig bug with VRAM where os x doesn't recognize it all.

Man, I'm not sure I'd stack those cards though, the hot air would be blowing right into the next card...

I think the new motherboard has only 3 slots with a good gap for the Two double sized 5770 cards such that a 3rd single slot card will still fit, so if they were all single width, there should be good spacing.

That's fantastic. Although I think the 2010 Mac pro only has three slots, so "just" 15 screens. :)

So has anyone gotten this card to work in a Mac pro?
