Its like a USB port but twice as fast. Its used mainly for external disks and professional audio interfaces.
Firewire 800 is a fast port (up to 75MB/s) to connect external HDDs and DV/miniDV/HDV camcorders or decks or external audio interfaces.
It is similar to a USB port, which I assume you know what that is. It is used for the same types of things, and can transfer data at a faster speed. However it is less common and more expensive.
