Hard Drive Upgrade Recommendation

Hi guys, I'm looking to upgrade the stock 160GB 5400RPM Hard Drive that's in my Aluminium Unibody Macbook to a 7200RPM Hard Drive, now I'd like to get either a 250GB, 320GB or a 500GB one, so can anyone recommend a good one to me that's going to be reliable, fast and quiet? Cheers

I highly recommend the Seagate Momentus 7200.4. It's big at 500Gb and fast at 7200RPM. It's quite, cool, and energy efficient.

Funnily enough they were the 3 that I was actually looking at before I posted this :p Couldn't decide which one was better though. From reading reviews they all seem to have their good and bad points, the Seagate Momentus is fast and reliable but quite noisy, the Hitachi Travelstar is quiet but slower than other 7200RPM drives and the WD Scorpio is actually a good all rounder but a bit more expensive than the other two...Hmmmmm, decisions

So the drive itself is quiet then? It's just that there are a few reviews on Amazon and they say that it's a little bit noisy

Yes, it is quite. But remember over time all hard drive get a bit noisy. My Seagate Momentus 7200.4 is a little over a year old and it doesn't make any noise yet.

Ok wicked, think it's going to be a toss up between the Seagate Momentus and the Western Digital Scorpio now then, will probably have a look around online and see which one is cheapest, will most likely just get the Seagate though as you guys seem to like it so it must be good

Looks like I'll be getting the Seagate Momentus then, it's about £10 cheaper than the WD Scorpio

i heard the 7200k get hotter than the 5400... i want to upgrade my wife's White MacBook and they are already pretty warm.... i actually cannot type for long having it on my lap!!!


Should i stay with a 5400 in that case?


also... this would be my first Mac OX Self-Technical Support (upgrade)... i was a PC user my whole life (i switched 3 yrs ago).... DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO CLONE THE HARD DRIVE???
i heard to:
1. remove the existing one
2. use a cable or purchase a Hard-Drive Enclosure

The Seagate Momentus 7200.4 gets no hotter then the stock drive. It will also work in any Macbook ever made. All Macbooks get very hot. The hard drive is under the the right palm rest and generates little heat when compared to the rest of the Macbook. Look into Carbon Copy Cloner for cloning the drive.

i just read somewhere else to use SuperDrive to clone... what do you think?

how about a 1TB???

any recommendations for a 1TB or 2TB (if possible)???

i'm starting new business and need to store lots of pics (some videos, maybe)... of merchsndise i'm going to sell on eBay!!!

There are no 1Tb or 2Tb hard drives that will fit in a Macbook as of this posting. The biggest is 750Gb.

is there a BEST way to clone it???

should i clone Info into new one before i install it?

just deleted ALL of my files out of the "Developer" folder and it freed-up 4.5GB... now i can download the CCC... i had NO Space to download anything

NewEgg currently has a sale going on and I'm a bit at a crossroads on which to buy.

They currently have a 640GB 5400RPM 2.5" hard drive and a 500GB 7200RPM 2.5" hard drive, both for $59.99 shipped.

Is there THAT much of a real-world performance difference between 5400RPM and 7200RPM? And, what about heat generation and battery drain?

I haven't So I'll recommend it. and there are lots of places that do.

You don't really hear about one HD being "hotter" than another, I'd also say that the power consumption difference is negligible at best. However, there is a noticeable difference between 5400 and 7200 RPM.

i would be worried about the HEAT with the 7200... and in most environments (for an average user) there is no difference in speed/performance... i mean, if your using for MS Office, Email, Internet, etc THEN IT'S THE SAME... if you're in a NETWORK Environment where you "share" the drive, then maybe consider the 7200


AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT IS THINK!!! I mean, can you really count nano-seconds in your head... not really!!!
