Macworld is here again, and apples biggest concern byfar is clockspeed. Although there is a huge difference between CISC and RISC processing and the dual 800mhz g4 is equivalent to a 4.5ghz wintel, in order to capture market share, apple must exceed the 1 ghz barrier in order to make this macworld truely unforgettable.
In a press conference, Steve specifically quoted " think simple" as apposed to the normal " think different" slogan. What exactly does this mean? Combining the two would make, " think different and simple". Apple has fueled the fire and there is much to be expected this year.
With rumors about dual processors for imacs and the writings on the wall for a new imac, finally discountinuing crt monitors and embracing the lcd era, lets say apple also discountinues the g3 processor!
Last summer, Motorolla announced an upgrade to the current g4 processor codenamed " apollo". The model is expected to exceed the 1 ghz barrier and perhaps even feature 1.2 and 1.4 ghz models for the higher end. Now picture these processors taking place of the current g3's in the imac & ibook models. That would allow dual processing, better build for os x, and more sophisticated peripheral devices ( following foot steps of the pioneered ipod). Now, for the high-end macs, lets suppose for the powerbook and powermacs, the g5 as the basis for all processing capabilites. Starting at 1.6ghz and exceed 2+ ghzs, making it the fastest in clock speed and overall processor r ( almost a 10 ghz CISC processor, this isnt even considering dual processing) in the world, well at least for a microcomputer! So as for the product line, ibooks and imacs upgraded to apollo g4's. The powerbook as the mediator having a 1.4 ghz apollo g4 for low-end models and the 32 bit g5 in high-end models. The powermac remaining king starting at 32 bit g5's for low-end and 64 bit g5's for high-end models. Creating all innovative flat screen lcd displays, and a new product line of peripheral devices.
As far as peripherals, i belive the ipod is the basis for expansion. first, apple needs to unveil the 20gb model and a new software to expand on the already innovative product. instead of the rumored iwalk, the ipod already comes with a 6-line display with a backlit, superfast ieee1394 (firewire) data transfer and still small enough to fit in your palm. it already runs off of pixo's os ( most pda's have their own seperate os from the computer they link to) and create a stylus. It has a 32mb cache and is way too powerful for just mp3's, especially with the riaa coating cds so pc's can't read them. The mp3 era just might die out ( although there are ways to get around it). Ipod definitly has the potential to expand, give it an airport 802.11b compliant networking card and u have the worlds smallest pda, used for music, computing, quickest transfer from desktop and handy wherever u go!
For mock shots of the potential "imac" and an innovative "irocket" ( 2.2 pound, 7 inch portable, packing a 500mhz processor/ 10 gig hdd/24x cd-rw/dvd-rom combo drive/256mb ram/airport/ and usb & firewire ports). go to http://www.acorncreative.tv/imac2.html ( couldnt insert links).
Whatever happens, i have faith in steve jobs and i know this will surely be a macworld to remember!
Oh and don't be suprised this came from a 14 year old.
