Otterbox Defender question please

I see that it has like cover on it. Does it mean you really don't need a screen protector if get this? I need something decently rugged and looking at this but just didn't want to get a screen protector if wasn't needed if have this product.

I like the look of the defender. Was just curious if the cover on it acted like a true screen protector or if needed something else with it like the SGP or something like that.
