All-

So I got my Dell 26" LCD HDTV my Sony hometheater and my XBox, and yet I still feel like something's missing. I'm not certain I'm getting surround sound from my Xbox. My question is, do I need an optical input into my receiver to get surround sound, or will plain ole RCA cable do the trick?

I'm aware that this is a stupid question, either way: I should prolly know this. I originally thought that I need optical in, but the guy at Best Buy told me otherwise. Then again, we all know the problem with relying on guys from Best Buy for AV knowledge.

Now my receiver only has one optical input, is there such a thing as an optical splitter?

Lastly, what is the resolution I should set my LCD to, given the weird dimensions (26" widescreen)?

Thanks, you guys have always been a big help.

Yes you'll need to use the digital optical (or digital coax or the 3 ports commonly found on the back of PCs) to output 5.1 channels of sound. Standard RCA cables only have a left and right channel.

Here is Microsoft's guide on it: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/hardware/Dolby.htm

Oh, and you can get a TOSlink (digital optical) switch, just search froogle for it.

Surround Sound Is amazing on Xbox.

Yes you do need a optical cable and you do need the HDTV av pack/Avanced Av pack to get the digital out. (don't forget to turn it on in the dashboard)

i say its totally worth it.... esspically with halo...manoman

as for the TV the xbox can be set for Widescreen.... and because the tv is HDTV get the High Def. Digital out pack for the xbox so you can have extremly clear picture.... (some games support 1080 even)

the guy at best buy was wrong ;)
