I'm thinking the clip could be removed and the connecting spine could be slipped into a simple textile / leather band. That would position it so that the dock connector and headphone jack heads up the wrist (so you could run your headphones down your sleeve, if wearing long sleeves)
I'm not sure exactly how the nano / shuffle clip works, perhaps it needs to retain the metal clip within the band, but a simple, integrated mod like that would be much nicer than a silicone case that engulfs it and slops around your wrist.
This could be quite a cute, functional mod!

I think that the new iPod nano is the Prettiest thing Apple Released this time, I really like the Wearable Factor of it, not sure why it's ugly, they didn't make a small UI but a more customized one, i wish it had iTunes or Wifi on it, or that it was 99$ but I'm fine with it, I like it

For it to truly work as a watch and iPod, especially for those loving the Nike+ aspect of it, it would have needed Bluetooth for wireless headphones. I think it might be a bit awkward trying to run or even regularly listen to music with the new nano on your wrist as opposed to clipped to your shirt or waistband. The movement of your arm/hand whether running or doing things like dishes, or chores or whatever mean the flopping cord would be annoying. Which is why the market the clip in the ad.
The Monster Freeplay headphones made for the iPod shuffle 2G were really cool in that the iPod snapped right into the headphones. The watch idea is even better, but for music listening you need to be wireless and really who wants to put a BT dongle on the dock connector of their watch to listen to music..

I don't think this necessarily auto-locks like the iPhone, etc. But it may not keep the screen active all the time. I thought it had a slider, but I guess it does have a small sleep wake button. Not sure if that wakes it or if you still have to slide to unlock like a touch or phone. Theoretically though you could set the autolock in settings to never.

I don't think I'd pay 150$ for that, so I'll probably wait for the next revision when they add more features (perhaps internal speaker, bluetooth [though I'd doubt it]), and drop the price.
But yeah, I would definitely love a nano watch.

Sep 1, 2010, 07:41 PM
Yeah they really need bluetooth on the nano to make it a viable wristwatch. That'd be neat though!!! I may even use it for my car instead of my iphone if all I have to do is press the ipod app when I get in the car and it connects to the stereo bluetooth.

Rocketfish does make a Bluetooth iPod dock connecting adapter. The smallest of the ones I have seen so far. At 1.5 inches wide x .5 inches tall (not including the .25 inches of the actual dock connector part) x .25 inches deep - it would sit quite well below the new Nano.
Nano is 1.61 wide x 1.48 tall x .35 deep including clip.
The result is that the Rocketfish is almost but not as wide as the Nano, would make the nano almost 2 inches tall instead of 1.5 and isn't any thicker.
You wouldn't want to wear it all the time as a watch with that connected, but it wouldn't be too obtrusive to have that connected when using with BT headphones. Not the ideal solution, but since BT isn't apparently built in, 2nd best thing.

That's the exact Bluetooth adapter that I use for my Nanos (and as of last night, my new 6th gen "watch" Nano), but the specs there seem to be off. The adapter is actually a tiny bit wider that the new Nano. But all in all it works quite well, especially since this new Nano finally has the dock connector centered on the bottom of the device! Seems like it was ALWAYS skewed to one side or the other on the previous Nanos.
Added a pic of the new Nano with the Bluetooth adapter:

As far as I can see so far, it does dim in any mode after 60 seconds of the screen/controls not being touched. If you press the wake button to wake it, the backlight stays on for 60 seconds before it locks again. At 20 seconds, it has a partial dimming, probably about a 50% reduction in backlight. Then at the 60 second mark, it completely dims, locking the screen. It seems like the perfect amount of time for a watch. Set the "clock on wake" setting to on, and you can just hit the wake button when you need to glance at the time, since this setting (obviously) shows the clock first whenever the device is awakened. 60 seconds later the screen locks again. It really seems as if Apple designed this Nano to be used this way. The clock and the "clock on wake" setting are made for this.

It sure sounds like a good idea, but thinking it through I think the points made are good - charging it and charging your bluetooth headphones if you you dont want tangling wires. As well, for running so many of these things can be sweat/rain damaged. Caught in one brief shower and the next minute it`s packed up...believe me, I`ve experienced it.

Here is my set-up for a watch:
$8 sports band from Wal-Mart
http://a.imageshack.us/img822/3954/imageczf.jpg
With my RocketFish bluetooth adapter in the dock connector, and my Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800 bluetooth in-ear headphones:
http://a.imageshack.us/img829/6391/imageixb.jpg
This set-up got me some very confused looks tonight at the gym! As you can see, the headset looks like nothing but two in-ear monitors and a wire connecting them (and a play/pause, answer/end call button), and the iPod was on my wrist, where no one is looking for an iPod. My workout partners couldn't figure out where my music was coming from, as the headphones obviously have no cord coming down to anything! The only downside to this set-up is that the headset has no volume control, and with a bluetooth dongle in the iPod, you lose the ability to adjust the volume on the iPod itself as long as you are using bluetooth. But, it sets the volume at about 75% by default, so it works for me almost perfectly, as it's about the same volume I normally listen at, and I still have play/pause controls on the headset cord.

I think we will see a watch band that has a dock connection that offers bluetooth capabilities for the Nano. It wouldn't be hard at all to put the chip in a thin base that the Nano attaches to. This is just my rudimentary attempt at a make-shift solution until then. But, it is such a useful set-up when working out! Everything is out of the way, yet right within reach when needed (talking about track selection/pause/play capabilities).

Plugged into car audio. For lefties it makes a real nice setup. We wear watches on right hand. Clipped on dock up, wake lower left. Screen rotated. I pushed the Livestrong band to the edge of the clip away from the spring b/c I usually wear watch bands loose so they sit on my wrist a bit. I like having the sleep/wake on the bottom. Easier to squeeze. But I do like those ironMan straps and the walmart one too.

It's kind of hard to tell in my dark photos, but the strap I bought at Wal-Mart is almost identical to the "IronMan" one posted a few posts before mine. In fact, it's listed as a replacement band for IronMan watches. It has the plastic buckle at one end to slide the nylon band through and double back to velco onto itself (the strap). It has the separate elastic band that the actual watch on an IronMan watch which runs around about a third of the way around the nylon strap, and it's to this that I slide the Nano's clip onto to attach it to the band (just how the IronMan poster has his attached). It's a very comfortable band to wear, especially for working out/running, which, at the moment, is the only time I'm probably going to wear this as a "watch". I'll wait until some nicer looking "made for Nano" bands come out that hopefully will encase the Nano in a rubber/silicone/TPU/..something type housing, with a more elegant band.

Mine has a black nylon strap (looks like yours is blue), and where your IronMan logos are, mine has gray leather (including the pull tab, which is shaped just like yours). I like it because it's fairly neutral, with no other logos, and doesn't clash with the red Nano I have(also have the graphite Nano, but haven't unboxed it yet).

It should work and yes, you lose volume control of the Nano. Out put to the BT headset is normalized by the BT transmitter and stays constant. Although you can increase the volume on your BT headset but that is independent from the Nano.

If your Bluetooth headphones have a volume control (volume buttons) built in, then you will be able to control volume. The reason I can't is because my headphones(the very small Sony ericssons in my pic) don't have a volume control. When the Bluetooth dongle is plugged in, volume control is handed off to the Bluetooth system, and since mine has no volume buttons, I'm stuck at the preset volume setting. But a headset with volume controls will work fine. I tried a friend's Bluetooth headphones with volume controls paired with my adapter, and they worked fine.

Funny some people are saying $150-$180 for a watch is too much. But while I can't see wearing a Nano all the time - as I often mistakenly swing my arms walking through a door way and catch the edge of the frame or brush a doorknob with my watch and it takes some abuse and I don't want to do this to a Nano and beat it up - I have owned mostly Fossil and similar watches over the past few years. They usually cost $75-$110 on average. They do offer seemingly more durability. They come with the strap. And they offer 30m minimum water resistance which means you can do the dishes or wash your hands without worrying about getting them wet. Even my Seiko Kinetic (self winding) cost $350, but lasted me 6-7 years. So I can't say the Nano is all that costly for a watch.

This is how I'm trying to justify the purchase...... seeing it as an inexpensive, funky new watch.:p

I mentioned it above, but go into settings, general, time and date, and set "clock on wake" to on. Now every time you wake it, the clock is showing. Just swipe to the right to go to the home screen.
I think this is relatively well and good, but for me to use this thing as a full time watch, among other things I want an always on clockface. Anyone know if this is a possiblity?
It's definitely going to be interesting watching the different accessories that come out. The set ups in the thread are nice.

You want the screen to be lit all the time? And totally kill the battery? I'd much rather have a clock face only when I'm looking for the time, which this does. One button press, clock comes up and I see the time, and 60 seconds later the backlight is off. I don't want it on when I'm not even looking at it. What would be the benefit in that?

Always on is bad. Battery wouldn't last very long.
Also using a BT adapter takes a good chuck of battery life. It's nearly the end of my work day and I have just a sliver of battery left. Anybody using a BT adapter notice this too?

Yep, I noticed it too while working out last night with it. My workout was just under 2 hours long, and the bluetooth dongle had pulled it down to about 60% battery remaining in that time. We have to remember that this is a VERY tiny battery in this thing.

The problem with using the Nano as a watch would be washing your hands. Someone needs to come out with a thin clear case that encloses it with a wrist strap that integrates bluetooth within the strap/dock connector.

The incipio is on the right track, but the design is just ugly. It betrays the clean minimalism of the Nano.
In 4-5 months we could have some really mature products with bluetooth transmitters built right into the strap.

I wonder if wearing it on your wrist messes up the pedometer. Been daydreaming about how awesome the next nano could be. Maybe one day a bendable screen that goes from a nano square and folds out to be the size of a touch. Or maybe it'll just be a computer in glasses by then. The future, wooooo!

That would get annoying when everytime you moved it turned on. Think about how much battery you'd go through... particularly if you walk around with it.

That will be far in the future and I'm betting Apple would implement the foldable screen more for the ipod Touch/iPhone. Not until the foldable screen was really cheap everyday technology would you see it in a Nano. And I doubt the nano would ever be a computer with glasses, the whole point of it is not to have a computer but to have a small portable player. Once again I'd see that more for an iPhone/Touch.

Leaving the backlight on really eats away the battery. Remember, the nano has a tiny battery compared to the iPod Touch.

Exactly. I'm not sure why anyone would want the backlight on when they aren't looking at it, anyway. It'd last maybe 4-6 hours with the backlight on constantly, and what's the point, anyway? It's like leaving your car running when parking it for the night.

I got interested in the idea of using the iPod Nano as a wristwatch, and decided to try it out. I got a wrist-strap from a small kiosk the mall in Boise Idaho (where I also got the Nano from the brand new Apple Store). The little store was called Precision Time, I believe, and the brand of the wrist-strap is Bariloche.
Here are some pictures:

I'll be testing this out to see how viable it is. I'm using the pedometer, so I'll be interested to see whether it gets accurate results while being used as a watch.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Being somewhat of a WIS (Watch Idiot Savant) with an ever growing watch collection and an Apple evangelist I couldn't resist the temptation of picking up a Nano to use as a watch. While it does have its drawbacks, I couldn't be happier with the purchase. For now I have it on a cheap Timex strap while I patiently wait for new designs specifically made for the Nano to be available for purchase. I am also secretly hoping for a hack to allow for custom watch faces. Until that day arrives I'll have to settle for my completely useless picture of a Tag Heuer Monaco in my photo album that I enjoy staring at from time to time.

Battery life is abysmal because the dongle has to draw power from the Nano to work. It basically halves the normal battery life, maybe even more. But if you prefer not having you earbuds getting tangled while drumming, sure. Sound quality is dependent on your Bluetooth stereo headset.

Now that the Nano watch is a reality, it's interesting to look back at some of the forum (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1002844) comments (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1004171) from before the iPod announcements on September 1st...
I don't get why people think there would be a "watch" I rarely see anyone with a watch these daysOh and the iPod watch? FORGET ABOUT IT. It would cost a lot. Looks ugly.Yep. Nothing says "watch" like a big picture of a guitar... :rolleyes:I really don't think much of people that wear watches myself. In this day and age it appears to be a vanity issue, rather than serving any real purpose. Certainly there are cases where a profession or activity can benefit from a watch but that is no justification for the average person to wear one.
As to your post your references to Rolex and G-Shock pretty much confirm my suspicions. It is all about jewelry and we all know who wears jewelry. Certainly not men that want to retain the respect of their peers.

I still have yet to get it in the mail but the more I look at the JayBird BT Dongle the more I think the RocketFish, from an aesthetic point of view, is better. The JayBird is a lot narrower but it quite a bit taller than the RocketFish. The RocketFish just blends in better with the Nano aesthetic.
Now the question is if the JayBird performs better. Occasionally, my BT Headphones would lose the connection, ala Antenna-Gate, with the RocketFish. Usually happens when I cross may arms, which is very odd.

Silver on the left. Graphite on the right. Correct?
Funny, in that pic the silver looks better. But when I saw them in the store, the Graphite certainly looked better, not to mention it has a bit of a translucent purple sheen to it in most light. So I went with the Graphite.
Thanks for the sidexside BTW. I like the size of the iSport over the RocketFish, but obviously it is a bit longer too. Does one seat better, or does one get loose? Can you run with them or would they move and lose connection?

Both seat fine and stay firmly seated. Running would be no problem with both.
Funny you say that the Graphite, under certain lighting condition, comes off as purple. When I got the Graphite, I told the guy,
"I want this one, the graphite."
The Apple guy said,
"I think you mean purple."
Then I said,
"No, it's Graph..... fine, get me the purple."

^^ I won't ask why you have two, but do you like one color over the other? And in getting two, is there a reason you didn't go with silver or graphite and then a colored one like green or red? I plan to get my wife either a green or a red. She has the red 2G Nano but she loves that color green. And when I saw it in the store, I admit the green does look nice. I am also considering getting her the JayBird SB2 Sportband probably in the darker red where the outside is red and the inside is white. And given that I would get her the iSport.

Looking at both the RocketFish and the JayBird, I was thinking how a watch strap company could incorporate BT into the band. The solution poses 2 problems. Like many of the straps we've seen, and a few mockups, most people would orient the Nano in a standard vertical. This way you could have something as small as the JayBird BT iSport in the band as it curved around your wrist. Someone could even make a band like what Incipio is doing with molded plastic that enveloped the Nano and iSport. However, at that point you make it very difficult to access the headphone jack or the three physical buttons, of which the sleep/wake is crucial.
The other solution, which is what Incipio has done is to rotate the Nano 90 degrees so that the headphone jack is still accessible and though the pictures don't show it, one would assume so are the physical controls, either by cut out or repeater buttons. The one thing they don't give is access to the dock. Looks like you must remove the Nano from the casing to charge or access the dock. Now I'm sure some patience and a knife could remove enough plastic so that they dock was exposed and the JayBird could be plugged in, but then you have a BT dongle sticking sideways out the Nano.
Obviously the ironMan, Walmart, and other Nylon/Velcro straps are quite easy to obtain, allow for access to all ports/buttons, and orient the BT or Nike+ dongle directly below the Nano, making it less obtrusive, but they don't give any bump/whack protection like the Incipio might, nor do they offer any sort of cool metal or aesthetically pleasing solution.

If you were going to use the radio, and would already have the headphones plugged in (you'd have to to even activate the radio), why wouldn't you just listen through those instead of the bluetooth headphones anyway? Where would you put the wired headphones (since they'd be attached to use the radio) while using the bluetooth headphones?

I'm going to buy a new car in the next few months. Any model I should avoid so you won't think I'm a douche?
Hmmm thats a tough one considering you'll look like a douche regardless of ur ride, so u may just as well rock a nice car.

i agree, the rocketfish looks better!
thanks for pointing out about the heaphone port. Looks like I have to get the jaybird cause i may need the radio!
do you notice any performance differences between the two?
Performance is the same but, the one negative on the JayBird side is I think it draws more power from the Nano.

I though about the idea of turning the Nano 90 degrees so the 30 pin port would be towards the elbow. But that would limit the wrist from extending and possibly snapping off the dongle.

One thing the Jaybird has over the Rocketfish is the ability to hide/integrate it into a wristband. I don't think it would actually be that hard to take the plastic cover off and simply replace it with a custom wristband.
I've seen the idea somewhere, I don't remember where exactly, but I still have a picture for what we'd like in a wristband for the new nano. (the look of the wristband could be improved, though)

Hey, just slightly off topic, but how'd you find those headphones for sound quality & battery life? I already have the Sony MW600 dongle which has great sound & battery, but still too many wires involved for my liking, lol. Cheers :-)

If you were going to use the radio, and would already have the headphones plugged in (you'd have to to even activate the radio), why wouldn't you just listen through those instead of the bluetooth headphones anyway? Where would you put the wired headphones (since they'd be attached to use the radio) while using the bluetooth headphones?
hmmm good point!
Performance is the same but, the one negative on the JayBird side is I think it draws more power from the Nano.
thanks. going to go with the rocketfish for now then we'll see what else comes out

An integrated battery, cool. Integrated BT, great. Splash proofing it, ok. Some sort of surface button that activates the sleep wake, sure ok. But you're saying it must be used with BT headphones because access to the headphone jack has been eliminated?

The whole point is to use it with BT headphones, 'cause it sux to see a wire coming out of your watch all the way up to your ears.
And I'm thinking the 30-pin connector helps with the BT transmitter battery.
As for giving up radio, it's not really necessary, they can add a jack just for the antenna, but I don't know what output would the nano choose.

How does a regular watchband (one without a notch) fit? Is the nano off center? Does it feel secure?
Was going to order one from Ilovehandles (the Rock Band I think it's called), but being in Canada, shipping went from $5 to $26 - I don't really want to spend upwards of $50 on a strap.
Anyone else in Canada find similar for cheap?

Any reason to suspect that it would not also work with this new 6th gen Nano?

Okay - having the nano on a watch band is simply incredible - I bought a simple sportsband at WalMart for $10 - until the Linq from Incipio is released this is a great solution - I've got the Jaybird BT Dongle and it paired simply with my Altec Lansing SB2 BT Speakers as well as my headphones - so now my watch also controls the music playing to my speakers etc!
SIMPLY AMAZING - TOTAL WIN for having music with you and on you at all times

This band looks great and makes it feel like a real watch. I am now waiting for a hard plastic or silicone cover to make it more durable. I have hit my seatbelt and other hard objects with the screen several times. Maybe a silicone w/Zagg screen protector solution.
Or... since we are bringing the 80's back... a cool hologram sticker may look pretty cool...

Looks like Fossil's version of Maratac's Bond NATO:
In Goldfinger and then later Thunderball World Famous Secret Agent James Bond (AKA: 007) wore his watch on a black cloth NATO/MOD type strap with twin gray regimental stripes. These straps are faithful recreations made by Maratac feature their usual attention to detail in the traditional British MOD pattern and and Maratac’s Zulu Style. Would you expect a man licensed to kill to wear anything less?
A 22 mm width strap is the perfect fit for the nano. I ordered their Bond Zulu, which, from what I've read, is slightly thicker, has nicer buckles, and has a different buckle layout:
http://www.countycomm.com/BOND1LARGE.jpg
From the bit of research I've done, people tend to lean more towards the Zulu than the NATO. I've learned that there are hardcore watch strap people out there that are just as crazy as the hardcore Apple people here.;)
In case you didn't attach the nano to the strap properly, here's a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYfrsVCG-DI)....

I've found that if you run the headphone cords up through your shirt sleeve and out the neck to your ears, it's remarkably comfortable and not cumbersome at all to use with wired headphones. And being on your wrist is about the best location to be to access the touchscreen while moving.

^^ I looked at those Fossil straps, and while I like the designs and wide bands, I fail to see how the work with the Nano. They are meant to look through bars that the Nano doesn't have. They would most likely work in conjunction with the Incipio case/strap that is coming out. Slide out the Incipio nylon band and buckle and snap it onto one of those.

Wow...I gotta say thank you to all of you to opening me up to some cool ideas. I just bought a nano the other day and many people's first reaction is 'Man, that's so easy to lose!' True...but I'm usually good at keeping track of my gadgets. This MP3 player is slick!
The wristband/turning your nano into a watch is a freakin' brilliant idea. True, the solutions out there aren't the most elegant, but attaching the nano to a wrist strap is an awesome idea! Great for working out, too. I bought cotton wrist bands and just clipped my nano to that, but having a sleeker, thinner wrist band is a much better way to go.
I hastily bought a Rocketfish bluetooth adapter off of ebay this morning after seeing it was so small versus my older Motorola D650. Then, of course, I saw the iSport and started to have buyer's remorse. Thanks to some of your pictures, I'm actually glad I got the Rocketfish. It really does seem to fit the Nano much better than the iSport does.

There are two major things I have a problem with when using the ipod nano as a watch.
1. The headphone wire needs to be coming up your arm (parallel) not out of your arm (perpendicular). It makes it ten times easier to run with when the wire is going up your arm. Most straps I've looked at have this problem.
2. It has to look half way decent and not extremely bulking or off center from the strap. Some straps make the ipod nano an obviously looking clipped on mp3 player.
After buying my ipod nano solely for the gym and running I modified my old strap and it works perfectly and I wear it as a watch when going to class or out. Ive been using it like this for a month. Its simple, functional and half way decent looking.
Have a look the ipod goes into the black strap and the wire goes up my arm though my sleeve.

With the watches I've owned, I've had a tendency to accidentally smack them into things. I'm afraid the nano would NOT hold up like hard plastic or crystal screened watches.

I'm working on a flexible inconspicuous bluetooth watch band. The dongle fits nicely under my wrist. The picture on the right is how it looks when put together. I'm gonna solder and epoxy the electronics next.
Finally, someone with the right initiative. Find someone to back you up for mass production and you've got yourself a business.
I'd be the 1st to order one of those, if they're sold.

The Incipio Linq has been delayed until mid-November, which is vague-speak for we really don't know and may delay it again. They don't even have any photos or anything yet, which obviously indicates they announced a product based on a mockup and have either had difficulty designing and producing it, or early prototypes have needed revision prior to finally releasing something that works. Their approach from their initial mockup is to turn the Nano 90 degrees in their case so that the headphone jack points toward the hand or up the arm depending on which wrist you wear it on, and which way you slide the nylon strap through. However, the mockup also indicates that they are covering the dock port, so a BT dongle or Nike + Sport Kit could not be plugged in unless you modded it by removing a section of plastic (which may take away too much structure). In addition their mockup image (image as there is only one repeated in their various proposed colors) does not show the other side, so we don't know if there will be openings or press through soft silicone to access the buttons.
The Nanotch that has been posted in this thread, is so far the most protective solution so far available, and while out, supposedly good luck ordering and receiving one. It looks a little to rubbery to make wearing a Nano worth it, but unlike Incipio, apparently they have brought the product to market, and have actual product images.
Apple certainly dropped the ball in one aspect. The built in pedometer was a waste of space. They could have found a way to manage built in BT or built in Nike + so that people could run with BT headphones and plug in whichever dongle that did not build in. Their announcement of Nike + and online promotional materials was very vague and as the ultimate running/workout device, the inclusion of Nike + would have made this so much more successful. Likewise, they probably would have done better to use the two physical buttons for track controls rather than volume, or find a way to make a double click act as a track control. Waking the Nano during exercise for control is a pain. And while I have iP4 headphones with remote, a $10 headphone swap for online orders would have made more sense.
I bought a couple of these iLuv remotes off Amazon just so I can plug one in my car to my aux cable and then my Nano plugs into that. This way I can can pause or advance tracks without waking my Nano and accessing the screen while driving.

The seller just lowered the price to $11 for the Band, Screen protector, and case. In for 2.
I found a guy on eBay who is selling a combo pack of a watch strap, Silicone case and screen protector for like $12 shipped from the US. He has a few colors to pick from you. Search for:
"iPod nano 6th Watch Band, Case & Screen Protector USA"
Link to seller:

And it should bring it right up. Just wanted to let you guys know.

Yuck...... The nanotch looks like a cheap piece of crappy rubber. Looks like the nano can easily pop out. I'd be worried about the nano falling out of the case and cracking. Plus, who would want to wear such a giant rubbery thing on their wrist? It probably smells after you sweat.

Ofcause the different companies want to show of their new stuff, and who cares if they do it in an alias, that's how things work on the internet, and that's fair enough! Stop freaking hating!
The whole iWatch concept is great! People love it, and all of the different companies makes different straps. I personally love the Nanotch and the Hex, even though i work for NanoWatch!

It's huge - - it looks like one of the first generation GPS watches.
Also, by "when he moves his wrist towards him it goes on", do you mean the display turns on? Many of the recent Casio watches have a basic accelerometer that turns the display light on when you turn your wrist towards yourself.

The only problem with the concept of the iPod nano watch is how fragile the screen is. I know two people who have already cracked theirs. One person simply dropped it, the other was wearing it on their wrist, and it lightly hit a door as they were walking through it.
Anyway, I sold my nano as I wasn't really using it.......*shrug*

The fragile screen is a good point when wearing as a watch, as is the fact that it has zero water resistance (it's not designed to be a watch, obviously). So little things like a light drizzle or even washing your hands become things you have to actively be conscious of and not let the Nano get any water on it. In using mine, I've come to realize that the most useful time to use it "as a watch" is only when actually listening to it, like working out or running. Very easy to switch tracks, etc when it's on your arm, as you can see it clearly (not clipped down on your belt/waistband where you have to cock your head and try to look down to see it), and it only takes one hand to operate it (well..one hand and one wrist to hold it). I just don't think the Nano is built for wearing as a watch full time.

The water resistance could be improved by incorporating a screen cover in the wristband (like the Otterbox Defender (http://www.otterbox.com/apple-iphone-cases/apple-iphone-cases,default,sc.html) has for iPhones). I'm sure it's only a matter of time before third party designers address this issue.
Nonetheless, I'd be thrilled to see Apple directly tackle this issue themselves. I would be first in line to purchase a line of "tough" models of iPods and iPhones with similar specs to the tough digital cameras that are becoming increasingly common eg: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 (http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/compact/ts2_ft2/tough.html) which is not only waterproof to a depth of 33 feet, but also dustproof, freezeproof to -14, and drop-proof from a height of 6.6 feet.
