View Full Version : Why is there a dearth of good music on iTunes?

So it appears that iTunes Canada is a bust. Not only are they lacking great music such as Underworld and pretty much 80% of what I listen to (which is a scary thought considering how varied my tastes are), but even when they do have an act, say Bruce Cockburn, they have an extremely limited selection.

I tried making an iMix of my favourite hits of the 70's thinking that would circumvent the copious amounts of House music that I have and they had 16 out of 78 tracks. Nuts.

And, to top it off, they don't even have the artist/song that plays when you first load OS X; specifically, Röyksopp/Epie. Seems odd that they would license it for the OS but not get it on iTunes.

Anyway, I'm off to the record shop...

Last Tuesday (12-7) was particularly bad. I didn't find an album I wanted to download (which is rare).

I had to do the Barnes & Noble bit! :(

I agree. I have found 65 songs on the Cdn site that I wanted. No 'Oldies' from the 50's, 60's etc available and there are virtually no Movie Soundtrack titles available. Most songs I would like are available on the US site. In one case where the Cdn site has one song from a particular artist, there are at least 20 by the same artist on the US site.

iTunes Canada rates a 2 out of 10 at this time.

Yeah, I agree. I definitely don't consider myself an indie person, and it's very difficult to make a mix that I consider suitable, and even more difficult to find music by many of the artists that I listen to.

I don't and won't buy music online when I can just get the CD. However, the one time iTMS Canada could have gotten a new convert (ie: me) to the digital music store world, and they screw up. iTMS USA has a live Jack Johnson iTMS exclusive that I wanted, but they don't have it in the US. Funny thing about these iTMS exclusives is that these are live shows, not official albums, so what can anyone really do from a legal standpoint if Apple also sells these live tracks in Canada? Surely JJ wouldn't mind.

It is a waste of time searching for music in iTunes Canada. Most of the music I want is in other iTunes stores. As iTunes members, we should be allowed to buy music in any iTunes store worldwide.

As an alternative maybe we could form iTunes members clans. Each clan would have one member of each of the other stores who would purchase music from their store on behalf of other clan members, and email or burn a CD and ship it to the requesting clan member in return for cost payment.

iTunes US is still lacking some music I want but I don't think that the member clan thing would go over to well with the record companies :)

Hopefully iTMS CA will catch up. I've been pretty happy with the US store. When it first opened, selection was very limited. Now, it's rare that I don't find what I want on there.

Exactly. The Beatles may never be on the iTMS, but its theme song should be "Getting Better." "Getting so much better all the time..."
