I'm really pissed that the ipod touch doesn't get a 5.0 megapixel rear camera. So had bad is VGA anyway? Can someone share a sample picture of what a VGA photo looks like?

The VGA camera is the same thing on the front-facing camera for the iPhone 4.

The rear camera is 960x720. Just a smidge higher than VGA.

Only the front camera is VGA, not the rear one. Know what you are talking about before you get pissed about it.

That is what the rear facing still camera can produce. That's pathetic. I have an old dead flip phone in a drawer that can out do the new iPod's still camera resolution.

Stay upset, Steve really lowballed the camera on the iPod.

As other's have said, the back cam is NOT VGA. But a little higher rez than that.

I actually quite liked the camera on the front of the iPhone.

Remember, quality isnít determined solely on megapixels. You need the software in order to get the most out of the hardware. It might not look as good as the iPhone 4 or a Droid X, but it will most likely look better than the 3mp camera on my phone.

its not even one mp, its not even photographical technology, its just a still frame of a the video feature, it will definitely look ridiculously pathetic...

While I think Apple should be ridiculed for equipping a 2010 device with a 'ghetto' camera that was considered almost obsolete by 1999, the relative difference in megapixels is just that...relative. It depends on your uses for the picture...print, online media, etc. Honestly, I don't think the iPod Touch qualifies as having a camera...more than likely their idea of a picture is really just software doing a screen cap of the video image (which more or less matches their quoted resolution).

Here's a good example of differences between a 5, 3 and 1 megapixel camera shot, same subject:

Hopefully the software helps it out a little bit. It's like how the iPhone 4 quality is actually a little better than the Evo 4G despite the fact that it has less megapixels.

Pixel count doesn't mean anything. I had a 1.3MP camera and a 1.3MP camera phone many years ago. The digital camera took pictures that kicked the phone around.

It's all about the quality of the pixels. So your pictures absolutely do not represent any quality regarding the iPod touch camera, or cameras in general. Like I said in another thread, look at Canon's G series. They went from 14 to 10MP in the name of quality. The current camera beats the previous one by a large margin, despite having 3 million less pixels.

ok now im just being hopeful...
apple made lots of typos today...saying itunes 10 "will be available now" (not available yet) , saying the ipod touch can ship by tomorrow (now they fixed it to say in 1 week), along with like 2 other typos on the site

mabey this one is a typo also...maybe its really a 3.2mp and they haven't fixed it on the site yet *cross fingers* lmao

*edit* now they fixed it & itunes 10 available

Like another said, resolution is just how big a picture is. Picture quality is what matters. Heck the camera on the touch may just be able to take 0.7MP pictures, but it could be good quality. Who knows.

Haha, to be honest, during the event right after they announced the nano, I thought they were pulling our leg and going to announce something different.

Well ill be damned! If the 1MP picture is how the still pictures will look on the touchs camera then its perfect for me. I barely see any difference between the 3 pics, so thats perfect!

Exactly the same for me. I'm not a photographer by any means, and it is unlikely that I will care about having only the best quality pictures. Remember though, pictures may not be the best, but recording is HD. So videos should be good.
