Does anybody have any recommendations on good backup software?

I'd like to backup my home dir in its entirety to a firewire hard drive.
I want it to pick up all hidden files preferences etc.

Any thoughts?

2 words "Dantz" and "Retrospect"

It's a shame that Dantz no longer offer Retrospect Express as a stand-alone package. You have to buy Norton Systemworks or an external Hard Drive that includes it in a bundle (eg, Maxtor). You can still buy the desktop version, for me that's too expensive and I don't need the extra functionality.

If you don't mind free, LaCie's Silverkeeper will make a bootable backup and can be scheduled.

I have installed silver keeper and all looks good

I have just backed up some software onto my external firewire HDD, and would now like to perform a backup of all my other folders that i have set up as "sets"

If i perform a backup, will it only look for new and update files on the mac hdd and back them up, or will it delete the software i have backed up on my Lacie HDD as it is not set up as a set?

Also, when performing a backup, if i delete some files from my mac hdd, will it also delete them from my Lacie, or will it only add new files?

Many Thanks

Do you if any of the software mentioned let you replicate (synchronize) certain files/folders to another networked machine?

I use Carbon Copy Cloner. Great for whole disk backup or just several folders and it will create bootable clones of my drive. I backup all the family machines home folders up to my machine regularly and then clone my entire machine to group of firewire drives on a rotating basis.
