View Full Version : iPod nano as watch, who would do it ? :)

Well as an iPhone 4 owner having an iPod is useless.

But as Steve jobs showed the clock on the iPod nano looks nice :D

Question is buy and iPod nano and use it a watch along with a strap that I'm sure would come out ?

I'm thinking about it, seems like a nice idea to have a gadget as a watch.

Not if but when some entrepreneur designs a band to utilize that as a watch and offer it some safety. That actually might sell decently but would have to offer some protection to the nano. Will be interesting to see if any one can pull off a good design where it doesnt look clunky.

I'm considering it, have to see the device in person since 1.6" is kinda wide for a watch... will have to compare to see if it's appropriate and not looking too big, I wonder I'd you could have the clock app appear first or have that be a sleep screen setting. It has 24hrs of music play but how much will ot last before a charge if only mostly one uses just the clock app? If it's just 24hrs then I will not use it as a watch due to constant charging...

Yes, I would definitely use it as a watch. Especially if somehow it gets jailbroken and you can install different watch faces on it. Absolutely. Of course, I'm a watch guy and am embarrassed to say how many I own.

Buenooo, in that case just use it when you go out have it dim brightness once you get home take it off and turn it off or something. Kind of corny to rock a watch while you at home lol.

Throw in a pulse sensor too. lol Rounds out the health apps. :D

jajaja yeah I don't wear a watch at home neither, but as a medical student my day's 'work' sometimes really lasts the whole 24hrs, normal day for me is more than 8 for sure. The thing I'm saying is I need to see that wake screen! in the iPhone for example you can see the hour and the day and then just press the sleep button again and save the phones battery. If it has something like a 'wake screen' before the apps screen then I'm sold since I don't want to press a button (or wtever is used to wake it) then do wtver to unlock and then press the clock app, too many presses just to see the hour if there is no 'wake screen' I think. There HAS to be one, I guess I have to wait for a walkthrough video to see! The other thing is water! There better be some type of invisible shield or something for it to protect it from the water!

Sweet! how are you gonna accommodate the nano itself, you gonna create your own square casing and then solder it to the wrist band? The 32 pin connector how are gonna work that in? removable strap?

I was definitely on board with this idea when I saw it at the keynote. But no bluetooth means that for the major feature, iPod, you would be need to tether to your wrist. Don't like being tethered to a device, that's old school.

yeah I know I could do that, but watch the battery drain and nobody is looking at it! It would be a cool watch, but if I have to keep recharging it everyday it will not be for me, thus the 'wake screen' mention since people only look at a watch for a couple of seconds each hour. Is fine to charge my iPhone everyday but not my watch (2-3x a wk could but not everyday for me)....

Yes, I definitely would! I want a Dick Tracy watch too.

Glad to see I am not the only one. I used to be one of those folks who used to love wearing a watch and was even curious with the watch phones from LG that have been around a few years already.

^^^ CES 2009

I see the potential in this and hope Apple helps popularize it even if they won't be the first. The Nano is small enough and cheap enough to turn it into a watch. But unfortunately, Apple took some features away in this year's Nano model that may just make me wait for it next year. This is just a "trial" year with this new form factor.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we see a band for the nano by the end of the year or sooner and I would be crazy enough to get a nano if such thing were available.

In my family, I'm the To-Go-Guy with everything electronics and I try to stay up to date with new and rumored releases, so for a wile I had been reading that the nano would shrink in size and have a clip, and then all the sudden people started posting photoshop images of the nano being used as a watch, but I hadn't told anyone in my family this.

So today when I picked up my sister from high school (she's 17) I showed her a photo of the new iPod nano on my phone and told here it now has a touch screen and clip, and the first thing she told me was

"Does it still have the clock feature"
I said
"Yes"
She said
"Oh my god, you know what would be so cool, I have a wrist band that you can us and you can attach the nano and make it a watch"

It was a proud moment for me, we think so a like. I might give it a try.

wait that just blew my mind for one main reason:

The bluetooth.

I think there could be a market for bluetooth phone wristwatches.

How neat is that? You just walk around... with a watch and a small low key bluetooth headset or even bluetooth stereo music. 3g browsing? Laser beam?

The latest iPod nano improved the shuffle form factor, but got stripped away with some of its previous features.

But the biggest attraction to this year's iPod nano is it is wearable now. Not only as a watch, but as a pendant around your neck. You could do the same back in the iPod mini days with a lanyard, but this is far more portable and lighter now. If there is an accessory with enough solid protection for it, I might even have this nano form factor to be used as a keychain. Just wished Apple dropped the entry price to $99 if they were going to take away some features and didn't give it a memory bump. It really is the shuffle with a touchscreen at heart.

I'm way too hard on my watches. The only one I've had that actually lasts is a G-Shock. I'd hate to spend hundreds of bucks on a nano and have the screen shattered in a day or two.

I've designed a strap for the Nano, and been wearing it the last few days. I dont think there is any more risk of smashing the screen than any other large face watch.

I would apprieciate any feedback on my design.

Not trying to offend you but your straps look like a sewing class project to me.

I would never spend £15 on a strap with buttons when I can easily purchase a much more durable (and time proven) Nato style strap for 1/2 the price.

Straps are a dime a dozen! What I think it's really going to take is for someone to come up with an integrated case for the Nano similar to a couple of the concepts pictured earlier in this thread. My guess is it's only a matter of time.

im thinking the cord would get in the way. I know you can take it off your wrist, but then again, why would you want a watch you need to take off?

I guess it could have Bluetooth and you use wireless headphones...or even have it wireless control you ipod touch or iphone ipod app, that would be kewl.

I would do it for running. As someone else mentioned, run the headphone cords into your shirt and out your sleeve. He said he did it that way with the older candybar nano in a marware wrist strap.

But depending on how well the incipio does it, the big factor is protecting the corners. I whack my watch and sometimes my wrists too often going through a doorway or on the knob of an open door. Don't want to take off my watch everytime I want to wash my hands. Etc.
