Just booting to CD so I can install a 240 gig SSD and the CDROM is taking a long time to load the osx setup menu. Also the CDROM is very loud. 10 times louder than my 07 MBP. Is this normal?

Yes, the loudness is normal. It's been normal for the past 4 years... i.e. ever since the first Mac Pro

Along the same lines I have had trouble writing +R DL disks with the new MP. Even though the media is rated for 8X burning I have to write at 4X to avoid disk errors. Same media worked fine in my 2,1 MP.

Anybody else note this?

My Mac Pro 1,1 SuperDrive was much quieter than my new Mac Pro one. Not that this is an issue really (for me).
