DVDbackup isn't really being maintained. Take a look at MacTheRipper.

I assume you want to get that 7 GB movie onto a 4.7GB single layer DVD, right? There's DVD2oneX ($49) (you'll still need to burn it with Roxio Toast or OS X native burning, Roxio Popcorn ($49, or $29 if you already have Toast) (one step, burning is part of the recode operation) or FastDVDbackup(?) which does some extra stuff, like back up PS2 games, but it's an amazing $99. I've used DVD2oneX and Popcorn (new); I think Popcorn gives better quality than DVD2oneX, but it's also a bit slower (2 pass encoding, ala Nero, I think).

You can do what you want with ffmpegX (release p is preferred), but it's not for those that don't understand the underlying mpeg standards and DVD video formats.

Check out Roxio's Popcorn (http://www.roxio.com/en/products/popcorn/index.jhtml), it does the job and it competitively priced.

I would recommend ffmepgx, but you have to know what you're doing, it's not for dummies...

Just posted this over here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=103774):

HandBrake is a fantastic little cocoa app that'll do it all for you! Very reliable, good quality rips (straight to XviD or ffmpeg), AAC or MP3 audio too.

You don't get massive amounts of control, and it's not the most efficient software in the world, nor can you specify the thread priority but it does the job, its a doddle to use, its completely free and will rip straight from the DVD.

The best way to do it is with two little apps. One called YadeX, which will decrypt the DVD to your harddisk, and then D-Vision 3 (basically an easy to use interface for MEncoder) which will encode the VOBs to a file of your choosing. Its straightforward, and you get a lot more control. The rips are better quality (if you're playing them from your mac, using VLC or something), but they're a little jittery on my Kiss DP-500 networked dvd/divx player. As before, both apps are free.

D-Vision: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16486

I hope you're not planning on doing anything illegal...

FWIW I use mac the ripper and DVD2ONEX. Popcorn works well but isn't as flexible.
