So last week I was finally given permission to pull our G5 xserve running tiger from our cabinet. It had been relegated to a development server as it was almost impossible to keep patched against security threats.

Any good ideas of what to do with it? My boss told me to just "recycle" it, which meant it went straight in my car. It's not the greatest hardware (only 2x 80 gig of drive space and 4 gig of ram), and of course it's a rack server, which equals jet engine. Seems like a waste to just recycle like we do with so many of our x86 servers.

I heard they can be used for home rendering, say if you want to render a HD movie file, rather than strain the CPU on your main machine at home you can send the file for the xserve to deal with it. The only issue is finding somewhere to put it where the noise will not bother you.

Selling is another option, if it is in good condition then there is still a fair amount of money even in old G4 xserve's!

So basically, as a home server this thing will still run great, because its not such a big deal to upgrade to later security releases. I'm sure you could put Leopard server on there too. There's probably a wider range of options than you think.
