Whats the difference between the nvidia card in the imac and the ati card in the powerbook? Im thinking probably battery life for portability? Is there any difference in their graphics capability or speed? Is one better than the other for graphic design?

You're correct, battery life is a major consideration for portable video cards. They're also engineered to be smaller and output less heat-it's easier to get rid of a lot of heat in a big system.
