Holding the sleep button does nuthing and I can't imagine you can't shut it off cause the battery would just die out if your not using it so any help would be great thx!

Underlined clue that it's broken.

Mine shuts off after pressing the sleep/wake button
no it goes to sleep when you press it once but it does nuthing when you hold it down... isint it supposed to be able to fully shut down like every other ipod/ipad/iphone out there? it just goes to sleep and you press it again and it wakes up but how do you get it to shut down so the battery isint wasted?

They consider Sleep to be off.
In the User Guide on page 15 there is a note that states:
"Note: iPod Nano continues to use battery power after it's been turned off."

It force restarts like the old style iPod's. Remember it isn't running iOS or even iOS Lite.

Hold the Volume - and power button to reset it.
I think what you want to do is to deep sleep it… still trying to figure this one myself.

Do you think they'll "fix" this with a Software Update?
Also i'm having Rapid Battery Draining.

I've never had a nano that could shut down fully honestly. They just don't design them to do that.

If you don't mind waiting for the thing to boot up (which isn't too long) and having to set the clock every time. Sure!!!
