what would I be losing if I bought an '08 2.8 or 3GHz 8-core instead of an '09 2.93 or '10 2.8 quad? I know the RAM clock speed went up, but anything else?

I'm using Aperture, Photoshop, and SolidWorks, if that influences anything.

The Nehalem Xeon's gained Turbo Boost and Hyper Threading... which respectively turn off inactive cores and increase clock speeds on active ones for single threaded usage, and allow two threads to run per core.

I believe 2009 was also when they started putting the processors on riser cards, which would make them theoretically easier to upgrade (but still expensive).

I don't think there's much denying that the 2009 and 2010's are better than the 2008's.

I sold my 2008 2.8-octo for the new hexacore. So glad I did, in the long run this thing will def be worth it . . . I can see real world speeds of nearly 50-70% faster than the previous.

I don't know what the difference between the 08 model and the newest model is, but I can tell you that I had a first generation Mac Pro and bought the new base Model (quad core @ 2,8Ghz). I can see differences of up to 50%, especially when converting video files or rendering HD videos using Premiere.
